HIV diet
People who have been diagnosed as HIV Positive need to eat correctly to keep their muscles strong and to help their immune systems fight infections. They should:
Eat a variety of food. Make starchy foods (for energy) the basis of each meal. Examples of starchy food are maize meal or 'pap', breakfast cereals, rice, bread, samp, potatoes, sweet potatoes, spaghetti and macaroni. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruit every day to help fight infections. Try to choose different colours of vegetables and fruit. Chicken, fish, milk, meat or eggs can be eaten daily to give protein to keep muscles strong. Dairy also contains calcium, which keeps bones strong. Include one of these sources of protein with each meal. Dry beans can be used as a substitute for these proteins. Eat dry beans, peas, lentils, peanuts or soya regularly – for protein. Include sugars, fats and oils in diet for energy. Drink lots of clean, safe water everyday. If water comes from a river or borehole it should be boiled and cooled before drinking. Diarrhoea or sweating at night creates the need to drink more water. Cold drinks, fruit juices, teas and soups can also be drunk during the day. No alcohol - as it harms liver and depletes vitamin and mineral supplies. Wash hands after going to the toilet, nose blowing and before eating. Make sure food is still fresh, and all chicken, eggs, meat and fish are cooked properly.
