East Asia RECEIVING A BIBLE Missionary MomentIt didn’t take long. The taxi arrived at one of the city’s most famous landmarks to drop off a passenger. The professional middle-aged man who emerged from the taxi saw that tourists were receiving free books and other materials. He soon discovered that the book was the Bible. He accepted one himself and began to converse with one of the Christian volunteers standing nearby. The man’s heart was open and the volunteer led the man to faith in Christ. “Jesus is now in my heart,” said the new believer as the volunteer workers marveled at God’s working. Workers in East Asia are thankful to Southern Baptists who join them on the field and partner with them through praying and giving. The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. South Asia OUR GIFTS MAKING A DIFFERENCE Missionary MomentDONALD and HELEN MCKINNEY,* who serve in a large city in India, share this testimony: “For our poor Hindu friends, living in blue tarp tents without water, bathrooms or electricity is normal. Many are hungry and drunken husbands are common. Yet God saved a poverty-stricken, Hindu construction worker named Vena* in our living room. Though often beaten by her husband, Vena comes several times a week for prayer and Bible stories. Because of the Cooperative Program, we are here. With your help, we can tell about the one true God and His salvation. Vena has many friends and family members who still need to know. Pray as we seek to tell them.” The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Washington THE LAUNCH OF A CHURCH IN THE MIDST OF NEEDS Missionary MomentNorth American missionaries KEITH and KRISTINE CARPENTER moved to Seattle five years ago and helped launch Epic Life Church on Aurora Avenue. “Most people, if you ask them about Aurora, they’ll say bars and strip clubs and adult bookstores,” said Keith. “There’s just a lot of hurt along the street. We started talking with the homeless, knowing them by name—and people came in from those relationships.” The congregation spans from the homeless to people with comfortable homes and incomes. Your prayers and gifts through the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering are making a difference in the lives of people on Aurora Avenue. Thank you for showing your love by praying and giving through the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. American Peoples GOD OPENED DOORS Missionary MomentHands On missionary KRISTIN BOLT attended a college photography class in Sao Paulo, Brazil, for three months and made about 45 new friends. One was Muslim, another Jewish and several didn’t have any religious beliefs at all. God opened doors for Kristin to share the Gospel with each of them. Despite her initial fear, Kristin saw God’s strength in new ways during her time in Brazil. “God is faithful,” she said. “If we’re obedient, that’s all He wants. It does seem scary in the beginning, but all God needs is for you to say you’re willing, and He can run with that.” The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Europe THE HOPE OF CHRIST Missionary MomentMore than 3 million Latin American immigrants are currently living in Spain. They come looking for a better life for themselves and their families. They face prejudice, isolation, loneliness and poor living conditions. As a result of the Spanish economic crisis, they’ve faced job loss, desperation, fear and hopelessness. American Peoples SHARING CHRIST IN THE SCHOOLS Missionary MomentMIKE BENNETT sat in the parents’ assembly, facing a battle he knew he might not win. Bennett, an IMB missionary in Caracas, Venezuela, had been hosting talks in local schools on values. Each talk included a Gospel presentation, and the mother sitting across from him wasn’t happy about it. “My family is very devoted to the Virgin [Mary],” she said. She was suspicious of what Mike was teaching. Mike asked her to visit and hear an assembly. The next week she came and heard a lesson on self-esteem and our value in Christ. After the assembly the mother said, “That’s exactly what our children needed to hear. You’re welcome here any time you want to come.” The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. South Asia RAISING A NEW GENERATION OF BELIEVERS Missionary MomentA woman from Sri Lanka was only 5 years old when her teacher told her class Jesus had died on the cross for their sins. She cried for a week. From that time on, Jesus Christ had her heart. Though her Buddhist mother continued to take her to the temple, she belonged to Jesus. She heard Him speak to her throughout her life, and she sought to listen and obey. Today she is the mother of three young men. She has sought diligently to teach them about the way, the truth and the life. Missionaries in South Asia are grateful to work beside Christians, like this woman, who are raising a new generation of believers. Montana BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS Missionary MomentOften reaching the unreached in places like Missoula, Montana means thinking outside the church walls and breaking down barriers of traditional Sunday morning worship with activities and messages that resonate with the local culture. In planting a church in Montana, MARK and SACHA HASENYAGER held midweek evening services with free BBQ and contemporary services to appeal to those too busy with outdoor activities on Sunday to learn about Jesus for the first time. Horn of Africa THE PATH UP THE MOUNTAIN QUITE REVEALING Missionary MomentIn a mountainside village in the Horn of Africa, MIKE and ABBEY NETLES* were overwhelmed. “As we walked up the path, I was immediately struck as I observed the hundred or so children who were following us up the mountain, knowing they represented many more families who have not heard the message,” Abbey said. “The mountain overlooks a large Muslim cemetery. There are so many thousands who never had a chance to hear the Good News.” Only .03 percent of that people group has had the chance to hear the Gospel. Europe REACHING THE UNREACHED PEOPLE GROUPS Missionary MomentDecades of secular postmodernism in Europe mean the vast majority of people living there have never heard the Gospel message. Although taking this message to Europeans can be a daunting task, International Mission Board missionaries are seeing success. In 2010, because of the work of these missionaries, 150,000 Europeans heard the Gospel, nearly 7,000 accepted Christ as their Savior, 11,000 believers were baptized, 130 churches were started and work began among three unreached people groups. These successes are signs of the work God is doing in Europe; however millions of Europeans have yet to be reached with the Gospel, leaving much work in the years ahead. Pray that the work will grow in Europe. Ohio SERVE CHURCH Missionary MomentImpacted heavily by urban sprawl, Euclid, Ohio, is diverse on many fronts—including racially and socio- economically. One lifelong Euclid resident told North American missionary JOSH MCGUIRE it used to be a place where “everyone had each other’s back” because “churches cared. But, churches don’t care anymore.” Josh and his wife, JANA, want to change that. You can summarize McGuire’s strategy to reach Euclid in one word that also happens to be part of the new church’s name—Serve Church. Your prayers and commitment to missions through the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering are helping the McGuires make Him Known and impact lostness in Ohio. East Asia SHARE THE GOSPEL—SIMPLY, LOVINGLY AND BOLDLY Missionary MomentMATTHEW KEPNER,* serving in East Asia, shares this praise for a new evangelism initiative: “Local workers are being trained to challenge believers to prayerfully choose five friends or family members, pray for their salvation, perform one act of service for each one of them every month and share the Gospel—simply, lovingly and boldly. Believers are also being trained in a simple, reproducible discipleship method that they can use to follow-up with those who have accepted Christ. In the first four months of the new initiative, many who had never shared the Gospel before have started doing so, and more than 200 new believers have come into the Kingdom.” The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Mexico A Long-Term Commitment Missionary MomentCalifornia pastor Phil Neighbors realized many people groups with no Gospel witness exist in southern Mexico. His church, Valley Baptist of Bakersfield, prayed about taking responsibility for telling such a people group about Christ. He contacted CHRIS AMMONS, a missionary in Mexico, who discovered the Tijaltepec Mixteco people near Oaxaca, Mexico, have a large migrant population 20 miles from Bakersfield. Valley Baptist made a long-term commitment to take the Gospel to this people group. Missouri Fearless to Share Missionary MomentPastor and church planter apprentice ADRION (POPS) ROBERSON is passionate about raising a generation of urban missionaries who are fearless in sharing the Gospel in love and without compromise. He does this through serving children and youth in a citywide youth football and cheerleading program in the Kansas City area. The church described in Acts 2:42-47 is his model. Adrion asks for prayer that he and his team can surpass the 40-team mark and that the pilot program, “Gamechangers,” will help strengthen their community. The Cooperative Program enables missionaries like Pops to be creative in how they connect with unbelievers. Pray also for a strong core team of believers to move into the Wyandotte County area and endeavor to live the Gospel in the “hood.” The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Massachusetts Putting Down Roots Missionary MomentJOSH WYATT and his wife, BECKY, developed a growing burden for underserved areas like the Northeast while they were in college. They were asked to take part in planting a church in Princeton, Mass. After seven years of preparation, they made the decision to step out in faith and put down roots in Boston by planting Charles River Church. Boston is a mixture of transient young professionals, locals who bear the weight of past hurts and hang-ups regarding Christianity, and people from all over the globe. Your faithfulness in giving through the Cooperative Program allows for many in the Boston area to hear about Jesus. North Dakota Time to Plant Missionary MomentMORGAN MEDFORD didn’t grow up in a Christian home. At the age of 23, due to the love and patience of several people, he accepted God’s gracious salvation and later entered a pastorate in Dalton, Ga. God spoke to both Morgan and his wife, JANIS, about planting a church in the Dakotas through an article written by a friend. In 1997, they planted a church in south Fargo and Morgan later became the area missionary for eastern North Dakota. He now serves 1.5 million Dakotans as a church planting catalyst. He asks for prayer that God will send men who sense God’s leading to plant churches in the Dakotas. The Cooperative Program enables us to partner with more than 45,000 churches to make Christ known. Japan Putting The Puzzle Together Missionary MomentWhen 23-year-old STEVEN KUNKEL became a volunteer missionary to Japan, his mother gave him a jigsaw puzzle piece. “God’s still putting the puzzle of your life together,” she said. For TIM and IRACEMA KUNKEL, missionaries to Uruguay, the “puzzle” surrounding their son began 20 years ago when doctors diagnosed him with autism. Iracema studied special education so she could teach Steven, and she shared the Gospel with Uruguayan families affected by autism. Steven accepted Christ, and, at age 15, felt called to Japan. Later, the Kunkels transferred to Paraguay, where many Japanese immigrants live. Spain Partnerships Make a Difference Missionary MomentAbraham Rios of Seville, Spain, is grateful for the work of Southern Baptists who pointed him to faith in Jesus Christ as Savior. First, an International World Changers team asked Abraham to participate in a spiritual survey. Then, short-term worker Yasmin Vila Limo found that Abraham was seeking the truth. Next, missionary MARTHA MOORE discipled Abraham and involved him in Connexxion, a student evangelism ministry she started in Germany that is being reproduced on other campuses. Ohio Reaching The Cities Missionary MomentDENNIS HOLMES and his wife, MICKI, have lived and served in Cincinnati since 1984. Dennis serves as a church planting catalyst and as the city coordinator for Send North America: Cincinnati. The SBC church-to-population ratio for the Send Cincinnati five-county area is one to 10,861, but the ratio within the city limits is one church for every 59,245 people. The need is evident for urban church planting. Through your faithful giving through the Cooperative Program and to the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering®, we can improve those numbers — which represent souls. Pray for existing churches to come alongside as partners in support of the church planters serving in Cincinnati.
