A Thriving Ministry, Despite PersecutionMissionary MomentHART and MISTY PADDOCK* work with Pastor Sudhir* in South Asia. Pastor Sudhir has a thriving ministry, despite persecution. Hart and Misty prayed with one of his church planters who had been severely beaten for speaking in Jesus’ name. Undaunted, he returned to help villagers see how they could become Christ’s followers. Pastor Sudhir has a team of 11 evangelists/church planters who have planted 14 house churches and have adopted a goal to plant 100. The Paddocks also distributed 100 copies of the JESUS Film, 200 Gospel of John tracts, and 200 other tracts in the local language. Please pray for Pastor Sudhir, his evangelists/church planters, and for the Paddocks as they provide them with resources and training. Your prayers and support through the Cooperative Program are putting love in action across South Asia. *Names changed for security reasonsThe preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Hands On TeamsMissionary MomentAs strategy leader for Cape Town, South Africa, BONNIE DOUGHTIE supervised the first Hands On team of students to minister in the center of Cape Town. A group of university students took a semester off to get “hands on” experience in missions, and they impacted many lives with the Gospel. The girls stayed in a hostel, and the Lord used them to bring some girls back to Him. Other girls came to know Christ and were discipled while the team was there. Bonnie and the Hands On team were able to reach out to young adults from all over the world because of our faithful participation in the Cooperative Program. This week, please take a moment and pray for Bonnie and other Hands On teams who will visit South Africa in the future. Putting Love in ActionMissionary MomentAs churches like yours put love in action through the Cooperative Program, missionaries HAMISH and CINDY BUNTAIN have the opportunity to serve in Western Canada. Living in North Vancouver, Hamish fulfills his role as church strengthening consultant and seeks to encourage, support, and resource pastors and church leaders in their growth as spiritual leaders. In addition, Hamish discovers, develops, and deploys church strengtheners in every region of Western Canada with the goal of helping churches assess their current state of spiritual health. Pray with the Buntains that Canadian churches will be strengthened so they can give themselves away for the kingdom of God. Written In Their Own LanguageMissionary MomentAs strategy leaders in Rwanda, KELLY and LAURA SAGER are responsible for evangelism and the discipleship of believers. Thanks to your support of the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, they work closely with existing Great Commission churches training believers to share their faith with family members and friends in their communities. Training materials have been written and translated into the local language of Ikinyarwanda, and now, for the first time, many people have access to discipleship materials in their heart language. Pray for the Sagers and that the people of Rwanda will be receptive to these new resources. Cooperation Leads to a Ray of HopeMissionary MomentIn the process of building friendships in Budapest, Hungary, JOEY MARTIN fields many questions. He met Peter at a gym. Their weekly conversations at McDonald’s help Joey brush up on his language-learning skills while Peter finds out more about Joey’s “strange” ideology. Although Peter has said he doesn’t want Christ, a ray of hope came when Peter asked Joey how he gets paid. Upon discovering that gifts given by people Peter had never met enable Joey to do his job really seemed to strike a chord with Peter. While it’s a far cry from Peter’s surrender to Christ, it’s a start, made possible by your willingness to partner with sister churches to reach people through the Cooperative Program. Point of NeedMissionary MomentWithin the Los Angeles and Inland Empire Baptist Associations in California, there are 19 million people and 212 languages spoken. DON and LEESA OVERSTREET serve this growing area. Don is a church start strategist and helps start all kinds of churches to reach all kinds of people. That has included a Hip-Hop church and inner-city churches. Many in the city are drug addicts, homeless, broken, and needy people. Meeting people at their point of need and then telling them about their greatest need—Jesus—is what the Cooperative Program is all about. The Overstreets are grateful for your gifts and even more grateful for your prayers as they serve the Lord, and you, in Southern California. Two Couples from ArkansasMissionary MomentTwo couples from Arkansas boarded the BUS (Belarus, Ukraine, and the “Stans”) mission field some years ago and are making an impact in this post-Soviet world. ROBERT and JANET LEE* provide theological education. Robert teaches students who aspire to be pastors and missionaries, while also mentoring church planters. Through teaching English and befriending neighbors, DAVID and PEGGY RICHARDSON* have helped to start a church. Four times a year, they and another missionary family host a one-day training retreat for the fellowship leaders. David likes to build team spirit through adventure recreation, while Peggy leads the women in “craft therapy” sessions. The world is changing, and so are hearts as your church puts love in action through the Cooperative Program. The Lees and the Richardsons would appreciate your prayers this week. Robby Pitt in Burbank, CaliforniaMissionary MomentBurbank, California, is home to NBC, Warner Brothers, and Disney Studios. It is also home to North American missionaries Robby and Kim Pitt. Robby serves as church planting strategist for the California Southern Baptist Convention. Your faithful commitment to the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering empowers outreach in this populated, diverse, and spiritually needy area. Plowing ConcreteMissionary Moment“Plowing concrete” is nothing new to STEVE and APRIL BROWN. Hearts are hard in the Czech Republic, but breakthroughs are happening. April met Lucie in a park. When Lucie spoke about her involvement in the occult, April shared the truth of Jesus. Lucie regularly comes to the Browns’ Bible study. During an Easter egg hunt close to their house, another woman named Lucie strolled past. She knew about the Bible study, but explained that she wasn’t into the “God thing.” Steve was floored to learn that Lucie had bought her first Bible the day before their conversation because she thought the Bible would be a good place to begin to know about God. God is using your continued support through the Cooperative Program to soften hearts in the Czech Republic. Pray for both Lucies as they learn about God. ACTION 52Missionary MomentIn Canada, North American missionaries PAUL and LAURA JOHNSON join thousands of other Christians who are asking God for 100,000 baptisms by the year 2020. Your love for the Lord, for people, and your participation in the Cooperative Program can play an important part in this goal as you undergird this effort with your prayers and your faithful support. They want to see “Action 52” become a reality—a movement of every Christian sharing their faith each week with family and friends. Paul leads evangelism training and events for churches, and he is a volunteer pastor of ROOTS, a Chinese student church in Calgary. Students immigrating from China hear about God through this wonderful church. Pray for Paul and Laura’s efforts in Canada and for 100,000 baptisms in Canada by 2020. Seven Men from ArkansasMissionary MomentMARK EDWORTHY and SHEA MASSENGALE work as assistant coaches with an American football team in Krakow, Poland. Several of these men have invited Mark and Shea into their homes and lives. Still, they needed help. That’s when seven men from First Southern Baptist Church in Bryant, Arkansas, answered the call. They brought coaching and playing experience with them as well as the ability to build relationships. Three of the men even suited up with the team to play, adding muscle to their mission-field experience. You are part of this team effort as your church commits to reaching people through the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Cows Open Doors for the GospelMissionary MomentRICHARD BELL uses cows to open doors for the Gospel. Because Croatia’s farmers have little means to provide for their families, the heifer distribution project gives them an economic boost and buys Richard time to share Christ. One project recipient, Georgia, received three Holsteins. “Georgia cared for those cows like they were her own children,” Richard recalled. “She was also a faithful participant in Bible study.” Milan, the man who shared his life with Georgia and their two sons, left his work in the city to help on the farm. The sale of milk provides them with regular income, and Milan has become open to spiritual matters. You are putting love in action in big ways, small ways, and unusual ways as you participate in the Cooperative Program. Pray that Milan will come to Christ and for Richard’s ministry. Finding PeaceMissionary MomentTOM and BARB SUITERwork in Vienna, Austria, and it’s where Barb met Michaela. Although Michaela’s job was to make customers at her boutique feel at peace, Barb sensed that Michaela didn’t have any. Some time later, Jasmine, a company consultant from Paris and a Christian, paid a visit to Michaela’s boutique. Jasmine assured Michaela that “when you don’t come to Jesus, He will bring someone like the Suiters to you.” Later Michaela began reading the Bible everywhere she could and attending a “Christianity Explored” Bible study in Tom and Barb’s home. Michaela prayed to receive Jesus during a Bible study and now she has peace. You played a part in this process as you faithfully participated in the Cooperative Program. The True ParadiseMissionary MomentSUNG HO and MONICA KANG are praying for a church planting movement in Hawaii. Sung Ho is the state director of missions for the Hawaii-Pacific Baptist Convention. Working with churches and other missionaries, Sung Ho has a desire to grow new believers and nurture connections between sponsoring churches and church plants. He also works to extend missions education and care for ministers and chaplains. While some may call it paradise, without a relationship with Christ, those living in Hawaii will never see the true paradise God has prepared. God is using your Cooperative Program gifts to minister to those living in this beautiful, yet difficult mission field. Join the Kangs in praying for God’s Spirit to sweep across our 50th state. Something SpiritualMissionary MomentCHARLIE and SHANNON WORTHY were the first IMB missionaries assigned to Naples, Italy. Considered the most densely populated city in Western Europe (3.5 million), Naples is one of the world’s 28 urban centers where IMB missionaries began church planting strategies in 2006, thanks to your commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program. In order for the Worthys to begin their first church group, it seemed a natural fit to reach out to people in apartment buildings, schools, and shops. Meals can last four hours and family is the centerpiece of conversation. At least eight times out of 10, Charlie says, the conversation “turns to something spiritual.” Pray for the Worthys’ efforts and for their closest friends, some of whom are drawing nearer to making Christ their Lord and Savior. Ministry to Ex-OffendersMissionary MomentWhile opportunities abound for Christians to serve, one often neglected ministry is to ex-offenders. RANDY FOSTER, a North American missionary in Kentucky, notes that nationwide, almost 700,000 men and women will be released from prison this year, and few will have the support system necessary to enable them to assimilate into community as productive citizens. However, with Christian mentors guiding them, only 20 percent will return to prison. With the help of your prayers and your commitment to the Cooperative Program, Randy and his wife, ANNE, eagerly embrace this mission’s opportunity. Searching For A HomeMissionary MomentTIM KAUFELT* was in the right place at the right time, thanks to your participation in the Cooperative Program. He met Imnah* inside a Baptist church in England. Imnah was born in Afghanistan but has been searching for a real home ever since. Wounded from fighting alongside fellow Afghanis near his home, he fled to the comparatively safer country of Iran. After a year of working in construction, Imnah joined thousands of refugees on their journey toward Europe. In Rome, an American working in a local church gave Imnah a copy of the JESUS Filmin the Persian language. Marionett MinistryMissionary MomentAlthough it would be two weeks before FRANK LAMCA could retake his driver’s test to pull a trailer in Germany, it was plenty of time for him and his wife, JAN, to notice Herr Effke’s car at a gas station. The Lamcas knew Effke from his visit to their church. The day after a concert, Frank learned that Effke was licensed to drive a truck. He not only drove the trailer containing items from Frank and Jan’s successful marionette ministry, but he also asked if they would join him to watch a concert at another church. Hans, a church member, accompanied Effke and the Lamcas to the concert. Later that evening, Hans and Effke discussed spiritual matters, and today Effke is a believer. Trekking Ethiopia's MountainsMissionary MomentJOHN HARLOW* had asked a group of volunteers to do two things before they arrived in Ethiopia: prayerwalk their hometown and memorize the “Creation to Christ” story in English. Their preparation paid off when, after five days of trekking Ethiopia’s mountains, they arrived at a school. The teachers greeted them, shared a meal with them, and let them sleep in one of the classrooms. As a way of saying thanks, the group offered to tell the teachers a story. In an hour and a half, the teachers’ hearts were opened. These seven teachers are now believers and are telling the story of Jesus in different parts of Ethiopia, thanks in part to your commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program. The Little Child Shall Lead ThemMissionary MomentAt a busy Arab market, MIKE couldn’t carry his son, LUKE, , a 10-year-old with Down syndrome, any further. Setting Luke down on a step, Mike watched as one man, then another, and soon a crowd gathered around Luke. Mike’s translator explained that the second man’s son also had Down syndrome and had died, so seeing Luke on the same spot where his son used to sit provided comfort to the community. Luke was suddenly hoisted onto a man’s shoulders and the crowd cheered as Luke raised his fists in joy. According to Mike, “God has such a passion for His name to be known … that He gave us this child 10 years ago because He knew he would reach these people. … We would have never known how God could use Luke unless we went.” Pray for Mike today. Youth Strategist in KentuckyMissionary MomentNorth American missionaries JOE and GINA BALL have a passion for reaching students with the Gospel. As youth strategist for the Kentucky Baptist Convention, Joe supports, challenges, and encourages youth ministers across Kentucky to reach this generation with the Gospel. Ministries such as regional evangelism events, blogs, and podcasts provide opportunities for youth leaders to learn from and dialogue over key issues. Across the Bluegrass State, our gifts through the Cooperative Program enable Joe to help churches reach spiritually hungry students who are searching for relationships, relevance, and spiritual truth. This week, pray that they will discover and embrace exactly what they need—Jesus Christ. STATEMENT: Commitments to God are very important. Church Planting is His PassionMissionary MomentROMULO SOY’S passion is church planting, especially among his own people group—Filipinos. It is his compassion and vision to evangelize the Filipinos living in California that led him to ministry. As a North American missionary serving as church strategist and Filipino statewide missionary for the California Southern Baptist Convention, Romulo sees and feels the spiritual hunger of his people, and in many cases finds them responsive to the Gospel. The need is great, and challenges are plentiful, but your commitment to fulfilling the Great Commission through the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering is spreading God’s love throughout California. Stuck in the MudMissionary MomentA self-proclaimed hillbilly from southwest Missouri, RANDY NUCKOLS* likes to drive his Toyota 4X4 in the mud for fun. One day Randy had too much fun, miring his truck up to the running boards. Desiring to thank the three families who pulled him out, Randy bought about $100 worth of food and sodas and asked James*, a Muslim-background believer, to deliver the gifts. James took the opportunity to share that he was not a Muslim, but in fact, a believer in Jesus. Simon*, who had helped pull Randy out of the mud, accepted Christ, largely through James’ testimony. It’s exciting that God can use something as simple as getting stuck in the mud as a springboard to sharing the Gospel—thanks in part to your participation in the Cooperative Program. Pray for Randy’s ministry this week. *Name changed for security reasonsThe preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. One AfternoonMissionary MomentLINDA YOUNG* loves visits, but was disappointed when Nadie* arrived. Linda planned to spend that afternoon with Haja*, who wanted to hear more about the story of salvation. Haja later joined them and shared that men in her village said there was no need for her to study about God since she was a woman. Her comment struck a chord with Nadie. When Linda shared with them that Jesus couldn’t be followed alongside Mohammad, Nadie said to Haja, “Sister, you have to choose. She’s saying there’s only one way…I’m ready to leave the old and take the new.” Both women made professions of faith in Christ. You are making a difference in the hearts of people around the world as you faithfully participate in the Cooperative Program. Pray for these women and for Linda. Building BridgesMissionary MomentThe Carver Baptist Center in New Orleans builds bridges to intentionally share the Gospel and disciple people to be more like Jesus. Assistant director, missionary JENNIFER FANNIN, says this is accomplished through a variety of ministries that reach out to children, teens, and families. Lives have been dramatically changed as a result. Southern Baptists continue to impact the New Orleans area as we work together through the Cooperative Program. Please pray that families would be strengthened and God honored in the daily lives of those coming to Carver Center. Pray also that the violence and drugs that control so many lives would be overcome as Jesus transforms lives.
