Creating A VisionMissionary MomentThe Central and Lendale Baptist Associations in Michigan cover a geographical area of 4,400 square miles and encompass seven counties. CHUCK TURNER is the associational missionary, and he works with 27 churches and missions in strengthening existing churches and creating a vision to plant new churches. Your prayers and your continued commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program assist Chuck as he enlists mission teams from other states to help with revivals, Vacation Bible Schools, retreats, and construction projects. Chuck and his wife, DEBBIE, serve in a state with limited resources and a depressed economy. Pray with the Jacksons that many people will come to know Christ through their efforts. Thanks in part to your continued support of the Cooperative Program, missionaries STEPHANIE and ROSS SMITH operate a hockey team which has created countless opportunities to share the love of Christ with athletes, their families, and fans. Meeting the NeedsMissionary MomentWAYNE and DEBBIE BRINKLEY have seen a lot. When an earthquake hit Lima, Peru, on August 15, 2007, they worked long hours trying to help people, went several days without a shower, and slept in their car. Nothing reduced Debbie to tears until 7-year-old Adriana bounced into the churchyard ready for Sunday School. The pastor’s wife had to tell Adriana that Sunday School would have to wait because there was no place for her class to meet. Your participation in the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas offering allows Debbie to meet people at their most dire point of need and remind them that the food she provides is temporary, but God’s Word, the true bread of life, is eternal. The Brinkleys covet your prayers this week. New Life for the Happy CouplesMissionary MomentDON and LINDA JOHNSON are part of the North Conchucos Team, ministering to the Quechua in Peru. Pastor Esteben relies on their help, so when the person who was to perform a mass wedding couldn’t come, the pastor asked the Johnsons to step in. These were more than just happy couples; they were the core group of a new church. After a 45-minute drive, a walk down to the river and up a mountain on the other side, Don taught on marriage and performed the wedding, and Linda shared the meaning of baptism. After 11 people were baptized and the new church was organized, several others prayed to receive Christ. God continues to honor your commitment to putting love in action through the Cooperative Program. Pray for these newlyweds, the newly-formed church, and for the new believers. Triangle Baptist AssociationMissionary MomentNineteen churches and missions make up the Triangle Baptist Association in North Central Montana. B.J. Thanks to your prayers and your participation in the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering, the Hallmarks are able to leave the Good News of God’s love with those living in the northern U.S. Please pray for the work of this association and that the Hallmarks will see many come to Christ through new churches and strengthening of existing ones. Vision for University StudentsMissionary MomentTERRY and JUNE SEIBERT* live in a city of 1.5 million and the educational capital of the country where they reside. The Seiberts’ vision is to reach university students from all parts of the country and Central Asia with the Gospel and disciple them so that when these students return home, they will be solid witnesses for Jesus. Recently, Terry and June have been involved with a new church plant. Primarily, they have been encouraging and supporting its four elders as they shepherd this church of students and young professionals. Production and distribution of Bibles, evangelistic, and discipleship materials in both the Kazakh and Muslim-sensitive Russian languages take a lot of preparation, time, and energy, but they are vital to the life of the new churches and believers in Central Asia. Pray for the Seiberts this week. *Names changed for security reasons The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Working with 20 churches in the area, Garvon helps churches in evangelism, church planting, and leadership development. One of his joys is coordinating evangelism efforts at the Sturgis Bike Rally. “I’m Your Friend. Friends Don’t Hit.”[/i] Missionary MomentDON and TRUDY WALKER* serve the Lord, and you, in Central Asia, thanks in part to your support through the Cooperative Program. When their son was in kindergarten and first grade, he suffered at the hands of a bully who hit him, knocked him down, and pushed him out of his chair. Setting emotional responses aside, the Walkers decided the best course of action was for their son to catch the bully’s fists in his hands and say, “I’m your friend. Friends don’t hit.” While walking home from school one day, the bully admitted that no one loved him. Their son’s response to the bully was “Somebody does.” Now their son looks for opportunities to tell this boy about Jesus. Pray for the Walkers, their son, and for this other boy to experience God’s love. *Names changed for security reasonsThe preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. God Guidance When Exploring a Seaside TownMissionary MomentPAUL and ANNA GIBBS* decided to explore a seaside town in Central Asia after an enjoyable team meeting/retreat. Needing to locate a pharmacy for a teammate, they turned down a road. Instead of a pharmacy, they found a farming community of about 33 people. Paul and Anna believe that they may have been among the first Americans these people had ever seen. The next day, they returned and were greeted warmly by three women and two children. A colleague accompanying Paul and Anna brought three Bible packets, and in return, one of the women gave their visitors a bag of hazelnuts. God is using your gifts through the Cooperative Program to reach people who need to hear about His love and grace. Eastern Nebraska Baptist AssociationMissionary MomentEastern Nebraska Baptist Association includes the state’s three rapidly growing metropolitan areas along with 12 rural counties with declining populations. The area is growing more ethnically diverse with churches currently worshiping in Spanish, Arabic, Korean, and Russian. Your prayers and commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program are vital to impacting this area for Christ. Inside The BagMissionary MomentDENNIS and SHERRY HOPE* work with volunteers in Central Asia who offer a copy of the JESUS Film and the New Testament in the native language. One group of volunteers decided to slip into a local shop. A woman sitting at a desk acknowledged them with a nod. When asked if she spoke English, the woman shook her head. Having browsed, the volunteers started to leave, but not before one of them felt compelled to give the shopkeeper a gift of the JESUS Film and the New Testament. The woman looked inside the bag, and her face broke into a huge smile! Standing up, she said “thank you” several times in English. Navajo, Apache, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Hangol, and SpanishMissionary MomentNavajo, Apache, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Hangol, and Spanish are just a few of the languages spoken in the San Juan Baptist Association in New Mexico. RUSSELL and KYOON BEGAYE serve as North American missionaries here, and as Native Americans, they have a unique understanding of the needs of the people and the barriers that must be overcome to reach them with the Gospel. There are also many people who work in the gas and oil industry. The barriers are great, but they are not insurmountable for God’s Spirit when churches commit to pray and continue to faithfully participate in the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. The Winter of 2008Missionary MomentKEVIN and MELISSA HARTMAN* have weathered some cold winters in Central Asia, but nothing compared to winter 2008. Icicles formed inside their kitchen. A chicken defrosting on the counter stayed frozen all day and then thawed in the refrigerator where it was warmer. Their kids wore two pairs of socks, four pairs of pants, four shirts, a hat, and a coat inside their 47-degree living room. It was still comfortable, compared to their national friends coping with escalating food prices and lack of any fuel to heat their homes. The Hartmans worked with several organizations to distribute boxes of food, blankets, and fuel. You were part of this effort, thanks to your commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Church Planting at Kiev Theological SeminaryMissionary MomentOur commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program enabled JOEL and MARY ELLEN RAGAINS to start the churchplanting program at Kiev Theological Seminary (KTS) to produce effective church planters. “The unique thing is that students must plant a church while they are still in seminary, so it does not take four years for them to start a church,” Mary Ellen said. Closer to home, Rick Morton and Tony Merida at Temple Baptist Church in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, help qualify students for this effort. In addition, Rick and Tony teach twoweek courses at KTS and send teams from Temple Baptist to help the church plants in Kiev. Temple Baptist also established a nonprofit program to host orphans from Ukraine. Temple Baptist families have adopted four Ukrainian children and anticipate the adoptions of four more. A Nearly Forgotten People Group Missionary MomentSARAH RALEIGH is a strategy coordinator for the Deaf in Colombia. With assistance from churches like yours, she helps train Deaf church planters whose vision is to make sure each Deaf person in the country has the opportunity to understand Christ’s sacrificial love for him or her. A nearly forgotten people in this South American country, many of the Deaf do not even know that God exists. But He has not forgotten them and is moving to bring them into His kingdom. You are part of this effort as you participate in the Cooperative Program (CP). Recently Sarah participated in a week of intensive training, Bible study, and fellowship for a team of Deaf Colombians. Five of them, who were involved in jobskill training, accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior at the end of the week. Remember Sarah and the Deaf of South America in your prayers today. Mark 12:41-44 Sitting across from the temple treasury, He watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums. And a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little. Summoning His disciples, He said to them, " I assure you: This poor widow has put in more than all those giving to the temple treasury. For they all gave out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she possessed —all she had to live on." The Gaeilgeoirí speak Gaelic as their heart language, and there are no Gaelic-speaking evangelical churches among this people group. “Most people here have never owned a Bible in their native Irish tongue,” the worker says. Recently, Irish New Testaments have been reprinted and are being put into the hands of men, women, and children who need to hear the Good News. God is honoring our faithfulness to Him, to His Word, and our faithful participation in the Cooperative Program. Please take some time this week to pray for this important ministry in Ireland. The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Mexican Parties in Germany Missionary MomentThere is a deep need in Germany for spiritual and psychological support. ALIRO SILVA uses his skills as a licensed social worker to counsel and use therapy to make contacts and determine people’s interest in participating in Bible studies. LARISSA SILVA and Aliro work mainly with Germans, but also with Spanish and Italian speakers. For the past four years, the Silvas have hosted a Christmas party based on a traditional Mexican party and used it as an opportunity to evangelize. As a result of their parties, the Silvas have started a house church. This is just the beginning of what God wants to do in Germany. With our prayers and our commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program, the Silvas’ efforts will continue to bear fruit in the days ahead. Add them to your prayer list for the upcoming week.
