The Family Adventure Quest presents a series of challenges that teams complete by seeking out facts or objects in various Kentucky State Parks and supplying a photo as the answer. It’s a great goal-oriented way to have fun exploring the natural and historical resources of this fascinating state! While some challenges are park-specific, most can be answered at any of several parks, and a couple can even be answered right from your living room. A digital camera is necessary to capture your team’s fun along your journey, and your photos just might show up on our website or Facebook page. Many have turned the quest into a family tradition, bringing together generations of family members each year to enjoy the experience, while some just look forward to the thrill of the chase as the quest packet arrives. "We love seeing our beautiful state and having family time – all wrapped up together into one fun adventure!" says three-time returning Team Rogers, from Mount Sterling. A little tweaking to the prize structure this year will hopefully encourage those who may have worried about time restraints in the past to join in the adventure. By correctly completing just 10 quests, your team will receive a certificate for a one-night stay at the park lodge of your choice (Sunday - Thursday) and free passes to park museums and forts. Fort Boonesborough State Park Hosting “Women on the Frontier” April 28-29 Commonwealth News Center press release
RICHMOND, Ky. – Find out about the life of a woman on the frontier during a special program at Fort Boonesborough State Park, April 28-29. During this interpretive and interactive “Women on the Frontier” event, there will be demonstrations and hands-on learning of 18th century life skills and daily activities in the lives of women. On the frontier, women were frequently called upon to do many things that might be more commonly associated with men. Guests will be able to learn about primitive cooking techniques, including cooking meats and bread on stones, baking potatoes under the fire, making ash cakes and hoe cakes, and roasting a pig. See how women prepared for the journey to the frontier, packed a horse to carry family belongings, and carried their own personal baggage. Many women of the time were skilled in woods lore and used the knowledge to help their families reach their frontier destination. Some women even participated in the defense of stations and forts during raids and attacks by Native Americans. A special interpretive presentation on women’s clothing of the period will be presented by Margaret Waterman. Be it the Colonial era (1750-1790) or the Regency period (1800-1820), Waterman's discussions of fashion and the clothing of the time makes sense out of what women wore. The event is free with paid fort admission and starts at 9 a.m. each day. In addition to the reconstructed fort, the park also has a campground, hiking trails, the Kentucky River Museum, mini-golf, picnic shelters and a gift shop. Fort Boonesborough is located near Richmond. From I-75, take exit 95 to KY 627. On I-64, exit at Winchester to KY 627. For more information, call 859-527-3131.

State Parks offer discounts to current military, retirees and veterans Commonwealth News Center press release
The Kentucky State Parks are offering lodging discounts to current and former members of our nation’s military services with the “USA Military Pass” program from Nov. 1, 2012, to March 31, 2013. The program is available to those on active military duty, retired members of the military, veterans, members of the National Guard and reservists. Proof of military service is required at check-in. “The Kentucky State Parks appreciate the men and women who serve or who have served in uniform for our country and want to let them know how much we appreciate their service,” said Parks Commissioner Elaine Walker. “The parks offer great outdoor opportunities for families.” With the USA Military Pass, lodge rooms are available starting at $44.95 a night; one bedroom cottages for $74.95 a night; two bedroom cottages for $84.95 a night and three bedroom cottages for $94.95 a night. Tax is not included in these rates. These rates are good at 11 resort parks plus the cottages at John James Audubon State Park. The rate is $5 more per night at these parks: Barren River, Cumberland Falls, Kentucky Dam Village, Lake Barkley, Lake Cumberland and Natural Bridge. The Kentucky State Parks have 17 resorts that offer golf, fishing, hiking on scenic trails, beautiful scenery and full-service restaurants. Many resorts are near or include historic sites and museums and offer programs during the fall and winter, such as elk tours, eagle watching tours and entertainment. This offer may not be used in conjunction with other special discounts or packages. The discount is based on availability, for leisure travel only, and may exclude special events and holidays. For more information about Kentucky State Parks and to make reservations, visit www.parks.ky.gov or call 1-800-255-7275. During the months of April through October, current and former members of the military can get a 10 percent lodging or camping discount.
