sentinel-echo.com Baseball 2012: Can Jaguars’ knock off Clay County in district or region? By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
When you think back to how last season ended, it’s easy to see why North Laurel would be hungry for a region title. The Jaguars lost to Clay County by one run in the 49th District championship game and again by one run to the Tigers in the 13th Region final. But while Clay County has eight players to replace, North Laurel has a nucleus returning for a strong post season run. The hardest part to fill might be lefthanded starting pitcher Jon Damron. John Allen, Zach Bullard, Kellen Turner, and Marc Kaminsky also graduated. There is a lot of talent returning. The Jaguars’ batting rotation is a pretty good college team. Centerfielder Marcus Carson has made a verbal commitment to the University of Kentucky, where Zach Storm has already signed. Bubby Brooks signed with Pikeville College. North Laurel averaged about eight runs per game last season, second only to Clay County’s loaded lineup. There should be a lot of runs scored again this season. The Times-Tribune Redhounds’ woes continue at Clay County By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
After starting the season with two straight wins, the Corbin Redhounds have hit a slide. Corbin (2-4) dropped its fourth game in a row Tuesday, as Clay County handed the Redhounds their worst loss of the season, winning 13-3. Corbin suffered a big blow when starting pitcher Trace Vorbeck was replaced on the mound in the first inning after experiencing some soreness in his arm. The Redhounds scored a run in the first inning before the Tigers answered with two in the bottom half of the inning. Corbin scored again in the third inning before Clay County took command and plated 11 runs during the final five innings of play. Vorbeck continued to do damage at the plate by delivering his third home run in two days. Corbin will be back in action Thursday at home against Barbourville, who is 1-2 on the season. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1450998428/Redhounds-woes-continue-at-Clay-Co

sentinel-echo.com South Laurel downs Clay County Tigers, 5-4 By Denis House, Sports Editor
Coming off a disappointing loss to Pulaski County, the South Laurel Cardinals regrouped Thursday night and handed defending 13th Region champion Clay County a 4-3 loss. The good pitching came from Daniel Neal, who threw a complete game three-hitter. He struck out six and walked none. He did hit one batter. The only mistakes he made came off the two home runs that Clay County hit. Neal kept the Tigers (4-2) at bay until the top of the fifth when Tyler Allen’s solo shot cleared the right field fence. Justin Smith opened the top of the seventh with a single to center. Tanner Hensley then smacked a two-run homer over the left centerfield fence, cutting the lead to 4-3. But Neal struck out Austin Carnahan, then got both Tyler Allen and Tanner Smith to ground out second and first to seal the win. The Cardinals will travel to Clay County Tuesday. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1940326195/Cards-upend-defending-region-champs

The Times-Tribune North Laurel suffers tough district loss to Clay County By Tim Branstetter, Staff Writer
NORTH LAUREL – Justin Smith took the mound for Clay County and that’s not what North Laurel wanted to see as the crafty lefty handed the Jaguars a 7-3 loss. It was the fourth loss for North Laurel in the last five meeting with the Tigers. Taylor Bowling suffered the loss for North Laurel. Bowling was hot during North Laurel’s Spring Break, but the weather was cold at home on Tuesday. Read the entire article at: thetimestribune.com/sports/x101451963/Same-Ole-Clay

sentinel-echo.com Tigers wrap-up No. 1 seed with 7-3 win over North Laurel By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — In 2007, North Laurel beat Clay County 5-2 in the finals of the 49th District Tournament. Since then it has been the Tigers’ district. With eight players graduating from last year’s Clay County team, 2012 looked like the year the Jaguars could reclaim the title. Tuesday night the Tigers showed they were not ready to let that happen. The Tigers’ 7-3 win Tuesday at North Laurel gave them the No. 1 seed in the 49th District Tournament, meaning the Jaguars will have to play and win a game just to earn a rematch. Another recurring theme in Clay County’s success has been pitcher Justin Smith. Smith doesn’t appear to be overpowering, but he mixes speeds and pitches well, which makes his fastball look faster. Smith struck out 10 batters, including a stretch of five straight, and did not issue a walk. Only one of three runs he allowed was earned. Clay County scratched out a run in the second inning. Nathan Huff was the third strikeout, but took first on a passed ball. Corey Corum followed with an RBI double. The Tigers opened the third inning with three straight singles. Tanner Smith’s grounder up the middle was enough to score Tanner Hensley for a 2-0 lead. Another run scored on Dylan Garrison’s grounder. In the top of the fourth inning. Austin Carnahan doubled to score one run. Two more runs scored on an error for a 6-2 lead. The Tigers final run came in back-to-back doubles by Hensley and Tyler Allen. The Tigers beat North Laurel three times last year, including an extra inning win for the district title and a one-run win for the region title. Tuesday’s loss was the sixth straight to Clay County. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1865823146/It-s-still-Clay-County-s-district

The Times-Tribune North Laurel rallies to beat Clay County on the road, 5-4 By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
North Laurel’s Ryan Shears tossed a scoreless seventh inning to wrap up a 5-4 win for North Laurel Wednesday, as the Jaguars fought back from a 4-3 deficit in the seventh inning to improve to 15-3 on the season. The Jaguars built an early 3-0 lead after a two-run homer by Zach Storm in the first inning and a run-scoring single by Storm in the third. Clay County fought back by scoring a run in the bottom of the third and took a 4-3 edge with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1344831241/Hurdle-cleared

sentinel-echo.com Tiger win streak stopped by North, 5-4 By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer The path to the 13th Region title goes through Manchester in more ways than one. The Tigers have won two straight region titles and they will host the 49th District Tournament. So for North Laurel to advance in the post season, chances are they will have to beat Clay County. North Laurel rallied with a pair of runs in the seventh inning Wednesday for a 5-4 win over Clay County. The Jaguars had lost five straight games to Clay County, including an 11-10 loss in Manchester in last year’s 13th Region title game. North Laurel started strong behind the hot bats of Carson and Zach Storm. Carson led off the game with a single. Storm followed with a long home run that outfielders just turned and watched clear the fence. It was the fourth home run in three games for the North Laurel slugger, who now has 10 for the year. North Laurel would not get another hit until the same two batters returned to the plate. With one out in the third inning, Carson singled. Carson stole second and scored on a Storm single for a 3-0 lead. A steady rain began to fall midway through the third inning. The Clay County offense started to come alive. Two walks, an error, and a popup allowed Clay County to push its first run across. They would leave the bases loaded in both the third and fourth innings. Tanner Hensley led off the fifth inning with a double and scored when Tyler Allen reached on an error. Walks to Tanner Smith and Austin Carnahan loaded the bases for the third straight inning. Dustin Gross bounced into a fielder’s choice to score Smith with Carnahan scoring on the Jaguars fourth error of the game for a 4-3 Clay County lead. In the seventh, the Clay County defense finally made a mistake. Cole Lewis lifted a fly ball to left field that was dropped. Carson jumped on the first pitch from Tyler Allen and burned the centerfielder for a double. Lewis scored to tie the game. Storm was walked intentionally for the second time and Gabe Blair was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Zach Hurley lined a hard shot to centerfield, but it was deep enough to score Carson with the go-ahead run. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1720492456/Tiger-win-streak-stopped-by-North-5-4

The Times-Tribune Jaguars capture 49th District championship By Tim Branstetter, Staff Writer
CLAY COUNTY — The North Laurel Jaguars brought out their bats and made a lot of noise as they blasted by Jackson County and kept swinging until they were the 49th District champions with a 4-2 win over defending 13th Region champion Clay County. Zach Storm gave the Jaguars a 2-0 advantage over Clay County on a two-run dinger in the first inning and his team was able to hang on for the win. The Jaguars were defeated by Clay County 12-11 during last year’s district championship game. North Laurel held a 3-2 lead when Ryan Shears was replaced by Marcus Carson in the fifth inning. Shears only surrendered two hits, but Carson entered the game in a jam. He went on to strikeout every batter he faced (eight straight) to lead the Jaguars to a district title. The Jaguars took advantage of several walks in the seventh inning as Ethan Eversole walked in a run for the 4-2 lead. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1561289188/Jaguars-capture-49th-District-championship

The Times-Tribune Barbourville drops 10-2 decision to Clay County By Tim Branstetter, Staff Writer
Clay County was forced to put the ball on the ground, but once they did they were able to get going as they defeated Barbourville, 10-2, during the first round of the 13th Region Tournament Monday. "We finally started playing small ball," Clay County coach Jason Smith said. "We've been trying to bunt all year, but we've had a lot of trouble with it. We finally laid down a few bunts and got things rolling." Barbourville's Jeffrey Banfield took the loss, but gave a solid effort on the mound. The score was tied at 2-2, but Clay County broke things open with five runs on four hits in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. sentinel-echo.com Clay County Tigers season comes to an end at South Laurel By Denis House, Sports Editor
With South Laurel’s 6-3 win over Clay County Wednesday night, the Cardinals not only dethroned the defending 13th Region champion, but moved one win away from a trip to the KHSAA state tournament in Lexington. South took that final step with an 8-2 win over Middlesboro to take the championship. The Yellowjackets upset North Laurel in the other region semifinal. The Cardinals (25-11) used four different pitchers in the win over Clay County (20-13). The Cards got on the board first, in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead. South added another run in the second on a solo home run to center by Drew Irvin. The Tigers left the bases loaded in the third thanks to consecutive singles from Nathaniel Huff, Corey Corum and Austin Carnahan with one out, but the next two batters failed to bring in a run. That would be a recurring theme for Clay County throughout the game as the Tigers left 12 runners stranded, including the bases loaded twice. South tacked three runs on the board in the fourth to push its lead to 5-0. Clay County finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs on four hits to cut the South lead to 5-2. Corum got things started with a single to center. Carnahan singled to left, as did Hensley, to load the bases with no outs. Tanner Smith singled off Simpson to drive in Corum and Carnahan. Dustin Gross then hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. The Cardinals scored their final run in the top of the seventh to make it 6-2. Clay left the bases loaded in the sixth, then stranded two more in the seventh after cutting the lead to 6-3.
