The Clay County Lady Tigers and North Laurel are both in the 49th district in softball.
The Sentinel-Echo Weaver steps down as coach of NL softball By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — It wasn’t softball that lured Shane Weaver away from North Laurel. Weaver accepted a guidance counselor position at Winborn Middle School in Lexington. At least for now, coaching is not part of the deal. Weaver just completed his fifth year as head coach of the Lady Jaguars. He leaves with a record of 160-54-1 at North Laurel. In five years, the Lady Jaguars won the 49th District and 13th Region each year. Their best finish was in 2008 with a 37-8 record and runner-up finish in the state tournament. The Times-Tribune Whitley County softball coach David Halcomb resigns By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
When David Halcomb took over as head coach of the Whitley County girls softball program 10 years ago, he figured he may be the coach for three or four years. He was wrong. Halcomb has been a fixture in the Lady Colonel dugout for 10 years, but decided Tuesday to step down as coach to spend more time with his wife and his son. Halcomb built a solid program during his stay at Whitley County, as his team reached the 13th Region Tournament five times while posting a 168-144 record. thetimestribune.com/sports/x850302749/Halcolm-resigns

The Times-Tribune Moses named new coach at Whitley County By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
It didn’t take Whitley County High School long to find a replacement for former fastpitch softball coach David Halcomb, who stepped down after 10 years of service last week. Former Lady Colonel and assistant coach Amanda Prewitt Moses was announced as the new head coach Tuesday. Moses, who has a career 1-0 varsity record as the Lady Colonel coach, was a member of Whitley County’s lone 13th Region championship team in 1996. Moses takes over a team that posted a 15-16 record this past season. Whitley County’s season came to an end after a 14-1 loss to Corbin in the 50th District Tournament. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1246688143/Moses-named-new-coach-at-Whitley-County

The Times-TribuneFormer Miss Softball named new coach at North By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
A familiar face will take over as the new head coach of the North Laurel softball program, as former Team Jaguar pitcher Becky Abner Osborne became the fifth softball coach in school history. Abner guided Team Jaguar to a state championship in 2001, as she pitched North Laurel past Owensboro Catholic. She’s also a former high school All-American, Miss Kentucky Softball, Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year, KHSAA State Tournament MVP and former University of Kentucky Lady Wildcat. Osborne, who was selected to the 2007 Kentucky Softball Hall of Fame, will inherit a team that returns seven starters from last season’s 13th Region championship squad. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1253558711/Former-Miss-Softball-named-new-coach-at-North

Middlesboro Daily News Lady Cats down Clay in battle of unbeatens
In a battle of unbeatens, the Bell County Lady Cats came out on top Thursday with a 6-1 win at Clay County. Senior pitcher Rachel Yeary allowed just one run on four hits while striking out ten and not walking a batter to earn the victory for the Lady Cats. It was 2-0 when Clay’s Morgan Chestnut led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to left field, however she was the last Lady Tiger to reach base at all.nClay’s other hits came on an Alex Roberts single in the first, an Amber Hurd single in the second and a Taylor Short single in the third. Hurd pitched well in the loss for the Lady Tigers, especially before tiring in the later innings. Though she allowed six runs on 10 hits, she struck out 11 and all three of her walks came in the seventh inning. Clay County (4-1) plays at North Laurel on Monday. It took a while for the Corbin Lady Redhounds to get going, but they managed to pull off a 2-0 win over Clay County on Monday. Corbin’s Hannah Hart didn’t pitch a perfect game, but she did record a no-hitter, while striking out eight batters. After four and a half scoreless innings, the Lady Redhounds took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Kelly Farley. The Times-Tribune Clay County no match for defending region champs By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
CLAY COUNTY — The North Laurel Lady Jaguars collected their seventh straight 49th District championship by defeating Clay County Wednesday, 9-0. The Lady Jaguars (31-5) entered the game red-hot and left it white-hot, as North Laurel scored early and often to extend its win streak to 17 games. The Lady Jaguars haven’t lost since dropping a 5-2 decision to Assumption on April 21. The Lady Jaguars have won 15 straight 13th Region Tournament games with their last loss coming in the 13th Region championship game in 2006 — a 2-1 decision to South Laurel in 12 innings. North Laurel, South Laurel, Bell County, Knox Central, Barbourville, Corbin, Clay County and Harlan County will be the teams participating in this year’s tournament at South Laurel High School. The 13th Region Tournament draw will be Friday at noon.

The draw for the 13th Region softball tournament was held Friday and 50th champ South Laurel (23-12) will be taking on 49th runner up Clay County (23-8) Monday at 4 p.m. The tournament is being held at South Laurel this year. Monday’s other first round games will have Harlan County (17-13) vs. 51st runner up Barbourville (8-15) at noon, 49th District champ North Laurel (32-5) vs. 50th runner up Corbin (20-15) at 2 p.m., 50th champ South Laurel (23-12) vs. 49th runner up Clay County (23-8) at 4 p.m and 52nd runner up Bell County Lady Cats (25-9) vs. 51st District champion Knox Central in the final first round game at 6 p.m. Bell County defeated the Lady Panthers (11-10) 7-0 last week in their regular season finale. Harlan County downed Barbourville 17-2 in four innings in their only meeting this season. However, the Lady Bears entered the first round last year’s regional tournament as a heavy favorite only to be upset by the Lady Tigers. North Laurel has dominated the region in recent years and they’ll take on an up and coming Corbin team. The Lady Hounds gave the Lady Jags a run for their money during the regular season, dropping a 2-1 decision. South Laurel and Clay County have not met this season. The Lady Cardinals boast a win over their rivals from North Laurel on the season, while Clay brings the third best record among regional teams to the tournament. The Harlan County-Barbourville winner will meet the North Laurel-Corbin winning in the semifinals Tuesday at 6 p.m. while the South Laurel-Clay County winner will play the Bell County-Knox Central winner at 8 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Read more: www.middlesborodailynews.com/view/full_story/18732636/article-Lady-Cats-set-to-play-KC-in-first-round-of-regional

The Times-Tribune Lady Cards slip past Clay County By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
James Burns’ South Laurel Lady Cardinals continued a recurring theme in the first round of the 13th Region Fastpitch Tournament — scoring runs with two outs and nobody on. Harlan County did it during its 15-0 win against Barbourville and North Laurel did the same thing during a 10-run rally against Corbin and this time around, it was South Laurel’s turn. The Lady Cardinals’ Bailey Miller and Lauren Williams each connected with consecutive run-scoring singles which led to South Laurel’s 2-0 win over Clay County. South Laurel struggled at the plate and finished the game with only three hits, but the Lady Cardinals did just enough to advance. South Laurel will be back in action Wednesday in semifinal action against Bell County at 8 p.m. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1647288731/Lady-Cards-slip-past-Clay-County

sentinel-echo.com South Laurel advances in region with 2-0 win over Clay County By Denis House, Sports Editor
A two-out error led to South Laurel’s two runs in the bottom of the fifth as the Lady Cardinal’s advanced to the semifinals of the 13th Region Softball Tournament with a 2-0 win over Clay County Monday. With two outs Hailey Burns sent a little pop fly on the infield that pitcher Amber Hurd and second baseman Taylor Short both tried to make the play on, but the ball hit off Short’s glove for the error. Emily Evans came in to run for Burns. Bailey Miller then doubled to left to score Evans for a 1-0 lead. Laura Williams followed with a single to right center that brought home Miller to make it 2-0. Up until that point it was a pitcher’s duel between South Laurel’s Hagan Burns and Hurd. While both pitchers allowed three hits, Burns didn’t allow a run in seven innings of work while striking out seven and walking three. A single by Morgan Chestnut in the fifth put one runner on for Clay with only one out, but Burns struck out Short then got Natosha Gilbert to pop out to Finley to end the inning. The Lady Tigers put a runner on the sixth but also failed to push her across. In the top of the seventh, Briana Smith led off for Clay with a wicked line drive that Finley made the catch on. After Halsey Parks grounded out, Chestnut walked and Short beat out an infield single. Had Finley not made that play to open the inning, the Lady Tigers could have had the bases loaded. Instead, with runners on first and second and two outs, Burns struck out Gilbert to end the game. The Lady Cardinals advanced to a semifinal game against Bell County. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1647289711/Miller-Williams-deliver-for-Lady-Cards

The Times-Tribune Lady Jaguars grab eighth straight 49th district title By John Stepp
The North Laurel Lady Jaguars captured their eighth straight 49th District Championship on Monday night with an 8-1 win over the Clay County Lady Tigers. North Laurel got a strong performance from their starting pitcher, freshman Mikayla Vires, who allowed just one Clay County run while scattering six hits on the night. Vires pitched a complete game for the Lady Jaguars, picking up the win. North Laurel wasted no time getting on the board as leadoff batter senior Sidney Herrell reached base and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by freshman Kailin Yantz in the bottom of the first inning. A single by sophomore Kayla Huff in the bottom of the second scored senior Emily Sears to give the Lady Jaguars a 2-0 lead after two innings. The Lady Jaguars added a third run in the bottom of the third inning when senior Vanessa Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by Vires, helping North Laurel to a 3-0 advantage heading into the fourth. North Laurel rounded out their scoring by adding five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and taking a 8-0 lead. Blake Johnson, Sears, Vires, Huff, and Farris Strong all scored for the Lady Jaguars in the inning. Herrell and Smith each added an RBI in the inning. Vires' pitching kept the Lady Tigers at bay until the top of the sixth, when Tracey Hubbard scored off an Alex Roberts single. It was the only run in the game for Clay County. With the win the Lady Jaguars advance to the 13th Region Tournament next week, where they are the six-time defending champs. Clay County earned a trip to the region with a win over Jackson County earlier in the day. thetimestribune.com/sports/x319992126/Eight-is-Enough

Times-Tribune Corbin knocks out Clay County one game before region championship By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
The Corbin Lady Redhounds are one win away from making history after eliminating Clay County, 5-1, during semifinal action of the 13th Region Fastpitch Tournament Tuesday. The Lady Redhounds captured a school-record 21st win while punching their second berth into the region title game, and first since 2009, thanks to a dominating effort in the circle by pitcher Hannah Hart. Hart kept Clay County’s batters off-balance the entire game and limited the Lady Tigers to only five hits while striking out 10 batters in the win. Hart also did some damage at the plate, leading the team with two hits and two runs scored, while Corbin finished the game with eight hits against a Clay County team that had beaten them earlier in the month, 3-2. It didn’t take long for Corbin to jump out on Clay County. The Lady Redhounds took advantage of some early miscues by the Lady Tigers. Both Hart and Kelley Farley reached base on a couple of errors while Whitley Gatliff followed with a run-scoring single, helping her team to a 2-0 edge. Clay County answered with a run in the top of the third, but Corbin came back with a run of its own to make the score 3-1 after a run-scoring single by Kaitley Jackson. The Lady Redhounds added two insurance runs in the sixth inning after a run-scoring infield single by Farley and a RBI single by Callie Schoolcraft. The win sets up a 13th Region title game showdown with rival South Laurel, who rallied to beat defending region champ North Laurel in the nightcap, 7-6, in eight innings. The two teams have met three times this season with South Laurel winning all three, 3-1, 12-4 and 3-0 in the 50th District title game. thetimestribune.com/sports/x240786753/One-win-away

The Lady Tigers only lose one senior from this past season’s team that won 24 games, second most in the 13th Region. Plus, pitcher Lesley Roberts returns to the mix from the injury and Clay County could very well be another team that could make a run at the region crown.
