TheTimesTribune.com North Laurel volleyball hopes to make it to region tournament By Tim Branstetter, Staff Writer
The North Laurel Lady Jaguars improved every season under former head coach Bill Abner, but they were never able to make it out of the district. New head coach Ali Ray hopes to change that. Ray admitted that her style is not much different than Abner’s and the team should have an easy transition. The Lady Jaguars lost a good group of seniors from last year’s team that finished 21-13, but went 0-6 in district play. Kelsie Smith and Gloriann Cordero will be hard to replace, but Ray likes her team’s athletic ability. Ray plans on switching things up some and going to a one-setter format as opposed to their traditional two-setter look. Tori Evans will take care of the setter position. A player that will be asked to step up for the Lady Jaguars is Tawny Gross. Gross gives North Laurel some size around the net in what is otherwise a small lineup. Another player that could have a breakout season is Samantha Proffitt. Proffitt is the most athletic player on the team and will need to step up during her senior campaign for her team to reach their goal of playing in the region tournament. Kristin Fields is another player that should have a good season around the net for the Lady Jaguars. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1452094471/One-goal-in-mind

TheTimesTribune.com Lady Colonel Volleyball looking for region title By Tim Branstetter, Staff Writer
The Whitley County Lady Colonels lost some talented players from last year’s team that finished with 21 wins, but coach David Halcomb is excited about the team he has retuning. Halcomb has a solid number of experienced players mixed with a young group of talented athletes that expect to compete for a region title. The Lady Colonels will be led by four seniors, Alyssa Monhollen, Carley Louthan, Ashley Lindsey and Brittany Seargent. Monhollen gives Whitley County a strong presence around the net, while Louthan provides the energy and leadership at the setter position. Halcomb expects two girls to step up and surprise some people this year and they are Lindsey and Briana Maynes. Maynes is a freshman with a lot of talent and Lindsey is expected to step into the spotlight as a senior. thetimestribune.com/sports/x2057654472/High-Expectations

Lynn Camp will be at Clay County September 27
thenewsjournal.net Volleyball on the upswing at Lynn Camp by: Jim McAlister
Lynn Camp hopes to break its 32-game losing streak on the volleyball court this season. The Lady ‘Cats lost all 18 games last season and 17 of 18 in 2009. Cody Dixon has taken on the chore of rebuilding the volleyball program. Dixon knows it isn’t an impossible task. Michelle Lewallen had to do the same thing in 2006 when she took over a team that had gone winless in 2005. The Lady ‘Cats had back-to-back winning seasons before going 4-16 in 2008. Dixon has brought in his dad, Clyde, a veteran coach, and Tracey Froelich, who played volleyball at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., to help rebuild the program. Senior Lori Barnhill has been the surprise of the Lady ‘Cats’ roster. “She is good enough to play on anybody’s team around the area,” Dixon said. “She would fit in anywhere in the area and be their best player.” thenewsjournal.net/details/5316/NEW-COACHES-AT-LC

Harlan Daily Enterprise Harlan County volleyball team has lofty goals by John Middleton
The Harlan County Lady Bears have improved each of the past three seasons, and head coach Donna Vicini believes that progress could culminate in a regional championship this year. With just two starters gone from last year and eight seniors on this season’s squad, the Lady Bears will field one of the most experienced teams in the 13th Region in 2011. Among the seniors expected to play a big role for the Lady Bears this season are returning starters Kelsey Cope, Brooke Bledsoe, Tyler Smith, Kendra Robbins and Katie Whitehead. Other players that will likely see playing time include Cara Middleton, Amanda Tolliver, Brittany Wynn Rebecca Eldridge, Keisha Mimes and Ashley Shotton. The Lady Bears turned in an impressive 8-0 mark against district opponents last season on their way to the school’s first district title. Harlan County’s season ended with a 25-16, 25-22 loss to eventual region runner-up Corbin in the first round of the 13th Region Tournament at Knox Central. The Middlesboro Daily News Clay County eliminates Harlan County by JOHN MIDDLETON, Harlan Daily Enterprise
LOG MOUNTAIN — Clay County rallied from an opening set loss with victories in the second and third sets to defeat Harlan County in the first round of the 13th Region volleyball tournament at Bell County on Tuesday. Harlan County (15-9) jumped out to a big lead early in the first set. Harlan County took another lead early in the second set, and a spike by Wynn put the Bears up 14-11. However, Clay County went on a 6-0 run, powered by two spikes by Sydney Combs, to take a 17-14 advantage. A carrying infraction on the Lady Tigers tied the game at 18, but Harlan County was unable to capitalize and Clay reeled off seven of the next eight points to close out the set with a 25-19 win. It was Clay County that took an early advantage in the final set. The Lady Tigers appeared to put the set out of reach when a tip by Katelyn White gave Clay a commanding 18-9 lead, but Kari Corum spiked into the net on the following point to give service back to Harlan County. The Lady Bears were unable to return the next two serves, but Brittany Bowman served into the net to give service back to Harlan County with the Lady Tigers up 21-18. The teams traded points before a tip by Clay’s Danielle Hubbard gave the Lady Tigers a match point opportunity. The Lady Bears kept the game alive on the following point when a return by Ailenea Sexton was into the net to give service to Harlan County with Clay up 24-22. However, the following service by Smith was long and the Lady Tigers held on for a 25-22 win. Clay County (14-7) will meet Corbin in the 13th Region semifinals on Thursday. Whitley County will face Jackson County in the other semifinal matchup. middlesborodailynews.com/bookmark/16094312

The Times-Tribune Halcomb likes Whitley County’s chances By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
Everything was going as planned for the Whitley County Lady Colonels volleyball team in 2011 until they met up with rival Corbin in the 13th Region championship game. The Lady Colonels had put together the best overall record and regional record in the region along with an unblemished 5-0 mark in 51 district play. They even entered the 13th Region title game with two wins under their belts against the Lady Redhounds, but Corbin surprised many by sweeping Whitley County in two sets while putting an end to the Lady Colonels’ attempt to capture their first-ever 13th Region crown. Whitley County coach David Halcomb and his players haven’t forgotten that loss and are hoping it will fuel them to the 13th Region championship this year. Halcomb said he expects his team to experience some ups and downs during the season, but in the end, being one of the best teams in the 13th Region. Halcomb believes a lot of his team’s success could rely on the play of sophomore Kelsey Osborne.

Clay County will host Corbin Tuesday September 18 at 5:30 PM The Times-Tribune Corbin Lady Redhounds look to improve on last season's success By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
Liberty Roberts’ first year as the Corbin Lady Redhound volleyball coach was a smashing success and she’s hoping her second year is even better. The Lady Redhounds are coming off a 21-17 season that saw them capture both the 50th District and 13th Region Tournaments while advancing to the Volleyball Sweet Sixteen. After starting the season 4-6, Corbin caught fire last season and went 17-11 the remainder of the season, which included winning nine of 10 games during late in the season. Roberts believes the success should carry over into this season. One of the big reasons many are considering the Lady Redhounds as the team to beat is because of the return of senior Vanessa Wiseman, who earned 13th Region Player of the Year honors last season. Corbin lost three players last season and return only two seniors to the mix this season, but the lack of seniors doesn’t seem to concern Roberts. Roberts admitted her team has a chance to make another run at the 13th Region championship, but admitted it won’t be easy. thetimestribune.com/sports/x453799797/Not-satisfied

The Whitley County Lady Colonels have lost a lot of fire power from last year’s team that finished with a 16-4 record against region opponents and were 13th Region runner-ups, but Coach David Halcomb is excited about the young talent on this year’s squad. Halcomb will have to replace Ashley Lindsay, Carley Louthan, Alyssa Monhollen and Brittany Sergent from last year’s team. He knows it will take some time, but he has confidence in his young players. Halcomb has several players to watch for this season, including Briana Maynes, Kelsey Osborne, Taylor Dingess, Becky Miller and Summer Gray. Halcomb’s sophomore class is coming off an impressive 13-0 record as freshmen and he is excited about watching them step up to the varsity level. Daily EnterpriseClay County ends season with loss in region JOHN MIDDLETON, Sports Editor
Harlan County survived and advanced in the first round of the 13th Region volleyball tournament at Lynn Camp on Tuesday. The Lady Bears edged 49th District runner-up Clay County in the first two games before closing out the match with an impressive final set. Harlan County trailed for much of the opening set, but rallied for a 26-24 win. The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 9-2 advantage, before Harlan County responded. A serve from Clay’s Rosa Smith went into the net to tie the game at 24, before Chyanna Harris scored on a spike and Mimes added a service point to close out the set. The Lady Tigers jumped out to another lead in the second set, but Harlan County once again rallied, this time for a 25-21 victory. Clay County (9-14) led 15-14, but a spike from Morgan Dubbles was long on the following point to tie the game. The Lady Tigers never led from that point, as Harlan County pulled away. A block by Clay’sDubbles closed the gap to one, but Harlan County closed out the match on a 7-4 run that was capped by a spike from Stevens. While Clay hung around for much of the first two sets, Harlan County dominated from the start in the final game on the way to a 25-10 win. After Clay point to open the match, Harlan County reeled off the next nine points to take control. The Lady Bears never led by less than six points from that point and continued to pull away. The Times-Tribune New coach Ratliff expects big things from Lady Jaguars this season By Chris Parsons, Staff Writer
As the 2013 volleyball season draws closer, North Laurel’s new head coach Haley Ratliff said she’s excited about what the season may hold. As for Ratliff, who’s a 2007 graduate of Pike County Central High School and recent graduate of the University of the Cumberlands, she said she feels like the sky’s the limit for the Lady Jaguars this season.
