thetimestribune.com Late rally not enough to lift Corbin past Clay County By Tim Branstetter, Staff Writer
The Corbin 9&10-year-old All-Stars made some noise for their first time fielding a softball team, but were not able to pull off another come-from-behind victory as they were defeated by Clay County, 21-7, Tuesday. Clay County scored five runs in the first inning and added five more runs in the second inning to take a 10-0 advantage. After two and a half innings, Corbin found themselves trailing, 21-0, but they managed to fight back and push across six runs in the bottom of the third inning to close the gap at 21-6. Corbin was able to score one more run in the fourth inning. thetimestribune.com/sports/x2004646278/Corbin-falls

sentinel-echo.com Area 2 9-10 Boys: Clay County 15, North Laurel Blue 1 [/b] By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
The Clay County bats were too much as the North Blue team was knocked out of the tournament with a 15-1 loss. Clay County scored every inning, starting with a three-run first. The only Clay County hit in the inning was a lead off single by Justin Begley. Begley ended the night 4-for-4 with a hit on the first pitch he saw each at bat. Most of the damage in the first inning was done by three walks, a hit batter, and an error. Clay County began to pull away with seven runs in the second inning. There were a pair of errors and a walk in the inning, but Clay County also began to drive the ball. Begley led off the inning with a double and Jacob Hall just missed a home run. Hall’s drive hit midway up the centerfield fence. Clay County’s six hits in the inning also included a triple by Hunter Henson. Clay County made it 14-0 in the third inning. Tyler Preston drove in two runs with a double and Begley followed with a two-run single. Henson’s RBI single in the fourth inning closed out the scoring for Clay County. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x546498028/Three-local-teams-alive-in-boys-9-10-tourney

sentinel-echo.com Area 2 9-10 Boys: Clay County 22, South London Red 1 [/b] By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
A red hot Clay County team knocked South Red out of the Area 2 tournament Tuesday. Clay County has won its last two games by a combined 37-2 after losing its opening game to Corbin White. Clay County needed to bat just three times to score its 22 runs. A five run first inning included a triple by Blake Mills and a double by J. L. Hubbard. Clay County put the game out of reach with 10 runs in the second inning. They would send 15 batters to the plate. Although Clay County had six singles in the inning, they were also helped by three errors, two walks, and a hit batter. Four walks, an error, and a hit batter in the third inning led to seven more Clay County runs. Hunter Henson also ripped a triple in the third inning as Clay County stroked five hits to give them 11 for the game. South Red did threaten in the fourth inning with back-to-back singles by Brett Norvell and J. T. Estep, but they would be left stranded. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x546500763/Good-night-for-South-White

sentinel-echo.com Area 2 9-10 Boys: South White survives Clay County comeback [/b] By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
South White never trailed Clay County and at times looked like it had another easy win. Instead the tying run was at third base when Eli Sizemore struck out the final batter to end a furious Clay County rally. South White jumped on Clay County fast with a two-run first inning. Clay County didn’t get a hit in its half of the first inning, but did tie the score with the help of four walks. The South White bats stayed hot in the second inning and took a 6-2 lead. Clay County got one run back when J.L. Hubbard tripled and scored on a Jacob Maggard single. Blake Mills took the mound in the second inning for Clay County and shut down South White for more than two innings. Mills retired the last two batters in the second inning and faced just three batters in the third and fourth innings. He got plenty of help from the defense. A flashy backhanded play by Conner Farmer stole a hit from Chance Wyatt in the third inning. After Hunter Johnson reached on an error, Clay County turned a double play. Clay County rallied in the fourth inning to cut the lead to one. They could have had more. Hubbard led off with his second triple of the night. Tyler Preston followed with a walk. Clay County tried to score Hubbard on a double steal, but he would be cut down at the plate. It was the second time Clay County failed on a double steal. With two outs, Justin Begley singled to score Preston. A hard shot by Farmer was misplayed, allowing Begley to score and make it a 6-5 game. The South White offense came back to life in the fifth inning and took an 11-5 lead. South White pushed one more run across in the top of the sixth. Clay County’s rally started with a one-out triple by Farmer. Henson reached on an error, allowing Farmer to score. Mills followed with a walk. Jacob Hall mashed a double to drive in both runners. Raven Abner walked and Hubbard singled to load the bases. There were two outs when Christian Jackson dropped a single down the right field line. All three runners scored to make it a 12-11 game. Jackson had moved to second on the throw home and third on a wild pitch. He would be stranded there as Begley watched a call strike three that he thought was outside. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1483831957/South-White-survives-Clay-Co-comeback

South outscored its opponents, 36-5, to take home the title. The team is made up of girls from the South London district, Corbin and Manchester. Sentinel-Echo.com Clay sends South home in pitcher’s duel By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer Clay County managed just three hits against a pair of South London pitchers, but made the most of them. Behind a strong pitching performance from Brianda Owens, Clay County advanced in the 11-12 Year Old All Stars District Tournament with a 2-1 win Thursday. Owens allowed South London only two hits and just one unearned run in the first inning. Clay County tied the score in the second inning and took the lead in the fourth. South London got off to a hot start beginning with Makenzie Powenski reaching on an error to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Tori Byrd bunted for a single and Leslie Dixon reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases with no outs. The run scored on a fly ball by Kenzie Jervis, but it would be the only run in what could have been a big inning. Clay County rallied when Maddie Frazier and Ally Hicks walked with two outs in the second inning. Bailey Hensley came through with the first Clay County hit to score Frazier. Clay County’s second hit came in the fourth inning. Again it was a walk that got the threat started. Lauren Smith walked and moved up on a bunt single by Carley Hoskins. Smith scored what would be the winning run on a wild pitch. South London couldn’t put any threat together against Owens. Their only hit after Clay County took the lead was a single by Kaitlyn Riley to lead off the fifth. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1333761010/Clay-sends-South-home-in-pitcher-s-duel/print

TheTimesTribune.com Corbin falls in loser's bracket finals to Clay County 16-3 By Les Dixon, Sports Editor The Corbin Little League All-Stars saw their quest for a District 4 championship come to an end Friday after dropping a 16-3 decision to Clay County in the loser’s bracket finals. Both teams met up just a few days ago with Corbin coming away with a 2-1 win, but this time around both teams were without their top pitchers. The game was close throughout with Clay County clinging to a 5-2 lead going into the sixth inning, but that’s when Scottie Smith’s team broke the game open. Clay County took advantage of eight Corbin errors during the inning and tallied 11 runs before taking a commanding 16-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. Corbin managed to score a run in the bottom half of the inning, but couldn’t get any more runners to cross home plate, as Clay County advanced to the District 4 title game today against North Laurel at 7 p.m. Clay County took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Brianda Owens reached base with a triple and later scored on a grounder by Lauren Smith. Corbin scored two runs in the inning, which was highlighted by Katie Williams’ double and Kiana Wine’s hard hit single. Corbin held the slim 2-1 edge until the top of the fourth inning when Clay County took the lead for good. Maddie Frazier connected with an RBI single while two more runs scored during the inning, giving Clay County a 4-2 advantage. Corbin fell behind 5-2 in the top of the fifth inning and Clay County put the game away in the sixth inning after sending 15 batters to the plate. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1763648583/Miscues-cost-Corbin

sentinel-echo.com Clay County captures district title with 15-5 win over North By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer North Laurel seemed to be on a roll as it swept it’s way through the winner’s bracket of the district tournament. The roll ended Sunday with a 15-5 loss to Clay County in the second championship game. North Laurel had played error free through the tournament until making five errors in its 6-0 loss to Clay County Saturday in the first championship game. They would commit three more in the first three innings Sunday. The errors helped Clay County jump out to a lead in the first inning. They would keep scoring every inning. Although North Laurel’s bats were more effective than the previous game against ace Brianda Owens, they struggled to get good contact on a much softer throwing Kim Mills. North Laurel managed just one hit in the first three innings against Mills. By the time the second hit came, North Laurel was already behind 8-0. Clay County scored two unearned runs in the first inning with throwing errors leading to both scores. Clay County would earn two runs in the second inning. After a leadoff walk to Bethany Buttrey, Shelby Phillips delivered an RBI double. A single by Mills made it a 4-0 game. Owens led off the third inning with a single and scored to make it 5-0. Three runs in the fourth inning included an RBI single by Owens and a double for Lauren Smith. North Laurel finally got to Mills for a run in the fourth inning. Brianna Houston beat out an infield single and Becca Riley followed with a double. Houston scored on a groundout by Jade Williams. Clay County got that run back and more in the fifth to make it a 10-1 game. North Laurel made their best rally in the bottom of the fifth. It didn’t look like a big inning when Summer Parker made a spectacular catch in left field on Morgan Vaughn’s line drive. Kayle Scalf walked, but was erased on a fielder’s choice for the second out. Vires singled and Houston reached on a fielder’s choice when the infield tried and failed to throw out the speedy Taylor Combs at third. Three runs scored when Becca Riley blasted a triple. Jervis followed with a double to make it a 10-5 game. Again Clay County responded with a five-run sixth inning. Mills drove in two runs with a single as Clay County put together five hits in the inning, the same number North Laurel had for the game. Ace, errors equal first loss for North
The North Laurel All Stars played an uncharacteristic game in Saturday’s 6-0 loss in the district championship. A team that had played error-free through the tournament made a few miscues. That led to an early deficit, which was too much to make up against Clay County ace Brianda Owens. Trouble started early for the North Laurel stars when an error and two straight walks loaded the bases with Clay County runners in the bottom of the first inning. North Laurel had also missed two foul pop ups that could have been outs. North Laurel escaped with Jazz Jervis fanning two straight batters to get out of the inning unharmed. They wouldn’t be as fortunate in the second inning. Clay County still did not manage a hit off of Jervis, but a pair of errors allowed an unearned run to score and take a 1-0 lead. Clay County started the third inning hot from the first pitch, which Owens drove for a triple. She scored on a deep fly ball by Lauren Smith. Carey Hoskins dropped an infield single just over the pitcher. Hoskins would score on a single by Shelby Davis just past the dive of second baseman Hannah Vires. Three runs would be plenty with the way Owens was pitching for Clay County. She did allow a double to Brianna Houston with one out in the fourth inning. It was the only hit she allowed. Owens finished the night with 13 strikeouts, including the last five batters she faced. Clay County added three runs to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alley Hicks singled home two runs and Hoskins singled for the final run. See more at: www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1952113964/Clay-brings-hot-bats-to-final-game#sthash.9eaKPfrt.dpuf

sentinel-echo.com North Laurel moves on with 9-5 win over Clay County By Denis House, Sports Editor
Through four innings of play Tuesday night, North Laurel held a 7-0 lead in the Area 2 championship game against Clay County. It was a good thing to score those runs early, because Clay County outscored North 5-2 over the final two innings, but it wasn’t enough, as North Laurel took the Area 2 title with a 9-5 win. A four-run first inning staked North to a 4-0 lead. North tacked two more runs on the board in the third for a 6-0 lead, all with two outs. The lead grew to 7-0 in the fourth. Clay looked to have something brewing in the bottom of the inning when it loaded the bases with only one out but Jakob Begley fouled out to the catcher and John Chandler Gilbert struck out. In the fifth McCulley led off with a double, then Jacob Curry went deep for a two-run shot to cut the lead to 7-2. North got those two runs back in the top of the sixth to push its lead to 9-2. Clay was now down to its last three outs and were determined not to go down without a fight, scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning. Begley and Gilbert led off with back-to-back singles. McCulley then took a 3-2 pitch from Philpot and deposited it over the centerfield fence to cut the lead to 9-5. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1952115434/North-Laurel-moves-on-with-9-5-win-over-Clay-County#sthash.8LmZHWdw.dpuf

Corbin jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning before seeing Clay County respond with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. Both teams scored a run apiece in the third inning before Corbin put the game away with a five-run fourth inning, taking a commanding 11-3 advantage. Clay County responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but couldn’t put together any thing else at the plate for the remainder of the game. It looked as if South London was going to cruise to the victory after Ryan Sizemore’s squad built a 3-1 lead after the first inning along with a 5-4 edge after the third inning and a 7-5 advantage after fourth inning, but Clay County never folded. Clay County sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth inning, trailing 7-5, and built a two-run edge with Hunter Henson, Trent Abner, Justin Begley and Raven Abner each scoring in the game. The Times-Tribune Clay County White 12 Corbin Red 9 By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
Things started out great for the Corbin Red 9-10 year-old All-Stars and it looked as if they were going to advance in the 9-10 year-old Area 2 Tournament after scoring seven runs in the first inning. But Clay County White responded in a big way, scoring two runs in the first inning while answering with five more runs in both the second and third innings to pick up a 12-9 win over Corbin. Corbin started things off in fine fashion in the first inning. Corbin sent 11 batters to the plate during the inning, taking advantage of two walks, three errors and a couple of hits to take a 7-0 lead. Clay County scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning before seeing Corbin take an 8-2 lead in the top of the second inning, as Peace crossed home plate for the second time in as many innings. Clay County cut Corbin’s lead to 8-7 after scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning, and they took their first lead of the game an inning later with five more runs, and the Corbin All-Stars found themselves trailing, 12-8. Corbin added a run in the fourth inning with Cima scoring and cut its deficit to 12-9, but couldn’t get any closer. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1696738680/A-tough-day

Sentinel-Echo.com Clay County stars win battle with South By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
Clay County rallied with four runs in the sixth inning and then had to hold off a South London rally for a 9-8 win in the finals of the 9-10 year old Area 2 Tournament at South London. Clay County advances to the district tournament. South London needs a win over Corbin to advance as the runner-up. It looked like South London wouldn’t have to play the final game as it took a 7-4 lead into the final inning against Clay County. Four walks and two big hits provided the four runs Clay County needed. The big hits were a two-run single by Raven Abner that tied the game and a two-run double by Hunter Henson that gave Clay County a 9-7 lead. Then it was the Clay County’s gloves that saved the game as South London did not go quietly in its final at bat. Colson Hays hit a rocket that was flagged down at second base. Harrison Byrd singled and Eli Sizemore took first on catcher interference. When Conner McKeehan singled on the first pitch the bases were loaded. Chance Wyatt hit a hard shot to shortstop that Clay County again got a glove on. It was still enough to score Byrd and make it a one-run game. Reed Marcum also hit a hard shot right at the second baseman for the final out. It was the first time South London had trailed in the game since the top of the first inning. Henson led off the game with a single for Clay County and scored on an error. South London answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Hays, Byrd, and Sizemore all singled with Sizemore’s hit driving in the first run. After a walk to McKeehan, Wyatt drove in two runs with a double. Wyatt would finish the night with four RBI. Clay County made it 3-3 in the second inning on RBI singles by Tucker Burns and Henson. Again South London had the answer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. McKeehan and Wyatt drove in the runs for South London in the second inning. Clay County put together three more hits in the third inning with J.L. Hubbard driving home Justin Begley to make it a 5-4 game. Clay County tied the game for the second time in the fourth inning. It would be an unearned run with Henson walking and scoring all the way from first on an error. Clay County would give two runs to South London in the fourth inning. Harrison Byrd was hit by a pitch and Sizemore walked. Both runners scored on the same wild pitch. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1952117023/Clay-County-stars-win-battle-with-South
