sentinel-echo.com Clay County knocks South Laurel from the ranks of the undefeated By Denis House, Sports Editor
The South Laurel Cardinals lost their first game of the season to the host Tigers, 3-1. Tyler Allen threw a complete game for the Tigers (7-2) to pick up the win. He allowed just one run on four hits while striking out 10 and walking two. He also smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Cards (5-1) countered with Zach Allen, who didn’t pitch a bad game in taking the loss. He went three innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out one and hit one batter. Matthew Slavey pitched the fourth inning and worked his way out of a bases loaded jam. Trey Martin came in to pitch the final two innings. With two out in the bottom of the first, Allen took a 3-2 offering and deposited it over the short right field fence to give Clay a 1-0 lead. Clay made it 2-0 in the home half of the second, thanks in part to two South Laurel errors. Nathaniel Huff led things off with a single to right and stole second. Dustin Gross then grounded to short, but the throw to third got away, and Huff took off for home. Neal gathered in the loose ball and fired it to home, where Moore tagged Huff out. Gross moved to second on the play. Jordan White singled to center where Trent Abner reached to pick up the ball but couldn’t get a good gripe on it, which allowed Gross to score to make it 2-0. South Laurel finally got on the board in the top of the fourth when Alex Sears singled, stole second, then reached third on an error. After Neal and Slavey struck out, Allen singled to left to being Sears home and cut the lead to 2-1. Slavey took over for Allen on the mound in the bottom of the fourth and was greeted by a single from Austin Carnahan. After Huff popped out to second, Gross was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for White. Slavey’s pitch looked like it hit the butt of White’s bat, but the umpire ruled it hit the Clay batter, so now the bases were loaded with only one out. Tanner Hoskins hit a grounder to short, and Sears fired it home for the force out on Carnahan. Slavey then got Trevor Sams to ground back to him to get out of the inning unscathed. South would get only one more hit in the game, a single by Brennan Miller in the top of the fifth. The only other Card to reach base over the final three innings was Sears, who walked to lead off the sixth. Clay added its final run in the bottom of the fifth for the 3-1 lead. After Slavey walked Dylan Garrison to lead off the inning, Martin came in to relieve him. He fanned the next two batters and it looked like South might escape the inning with no damage. Carnahan grounded the ball down the third base line, where Neal moved to his right to make the play. But the ball hit the third base bag and popped away for a single. Huff grounded the next ball to Neal who couldn’t make the play and Garrison scored for the 3-1 lead. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1319121374/Rust-shows-in-South-s-3-1-loss-to-Clay-County thetimestribune.com Knox Central 7, Clay County 5

sentinel-echo.com Tigers win battle for top seed over Jags By Denis House, Sports Editor
Two bad hops was the difference in North Laurel’s 3-2 loss to Clay County Friday night in the battle for the top seed in the 49th District. The first came in the bottom of the third, which resulted in Clay County tying the game. The second came in the bottom of the fifth that scored the eventual game winner for the Tigers. The Jaguars held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the third as starting pitcher Marcus Carson was not only holding the Tigers scoreless, but he also accounted for both North Laurel runs. He singled to led off the game and scored on a balk by pitcher Tanner Hoskins, then led off the top of the third with a solo home run to right. After retiring the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the third, Carson ran into a little control problem as he walked Dylan Garrison and hit Tanner Smith. With two on and two out, Tyler Allen singled to right that scored Garrison to cut the lead to 2-1. The next batter, Austin Carnahan, hit a grounder to short that popped up right as Cole Lewis was fielding it, causing him to bobble the ball, which allowed Carnahan to be safe at first and Smith to score the tying run. It stayed 2-2 until the bottom of the fifth with one out, Allen lined a single past first and into right field, where Austin Thompson was in perfect position to field the ball until it popped up and over him, rolling to the fence and allowing Allen to make it to third. Will Sexton came in as a courtesy runner and scored on a single by Nathaniel Huff for the 3-2 lead. Hoskins picked up the win, going seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking three. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1520503006/Tigers-win-battle-for-top-seed-over-Jags

Middlesboro Daily News Tyler Allen throws a two hitter to lead Clay County to win over Middlesboro Jay Compton, Sports Editor
Consistency continues to be hard to find for the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets. Coming off a 5-4, eight-inning win over Clay County on Friday, MHS was held to just two hits as they lost to the Tigers 7-0 on Wednesday. Clay County got a dominate effort out of pitcher Tyler Allen. He fired a complete game shutout and allowed just a pair of bunt singles to Jake Brock while striking out seven, walking two and hitting a batter. The Tigers got all of the runs they would need in the top of the first inning. Jordan White singled to center leading off the game and Tanner Smith walked. Allen hit into a 4-6 fielder’s choice to put runners at the corners and Austin Carnahan blooped an RBI single into shallow right. After MHS starter Brian Hale came back with a strikeout, Dylan Garrison singled back up the middle to bring in one run and another scored when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Down 3-0, the Jackets had their best scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second. Tyler Prater and Lucas Crawford both walked with one out and a sacrifice bunt by Hunter Collett put runners at second and third. But Allen stranded both runners by closing the inning with a strike out. Smith blooped a single to right to start the Clay third inning and Nathan Huff walked with two out. Smith stole third and scored on a throwing error for a 4-0 lead. Lucas Crawford relieved Hale to start the fourth inning, but was undone by a couple of defensive miscues. Trevor Sams reached on an error to start the inning and one out later Smith was hit by a pitch. Allen delivered an RBI single and Smith later stole home as part of a double-steal. Sams singled in an insurance run in the fifth. Crawford held the Tigers scoreless from there, but the Jackets never could get their offense in gear. Brian Hale reached on an error in the third inning and Brandon Hale was hit by a pitch in the sixth for the only other Middlesboro base runners. Friday, it was the Jackets taking advantage of some shoddy Clay County defense as they pulled out the 5-4 win in eight innings. The game was played at Knox Central as part of the Southeast Kentucky Invitational. Brock singled off Allen in the bottom of the eighth and went to second on a bunt by Tyler Yoakum. Brian Hale was hit by a pitch and John Millett reached on an error to load the bases and Brock scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Clay got an RBI single from Garrison in fourth and an RBI ground out from Tanner Smith in the fifth. Hale walked the first two batters in the sixth and Crawford took over on the mound. One run scored as Dylan Gross reached on an error in the outfield and Tanner Hoskins doubled in another urn to put the Tigers up 4-3. Middlesboro (13-8) hosts Williamsburg today while Clay County (15-11) visits Williamsburg on Friday. Read more: middlesborodailynews.com/bookmark/22437742

Middlesboro Daily News Bobcats fall to Clay in finale by Jay Compton, Sports Editor
Friday, Clay County got two-run homers from Tyler Allen and Austin Carnahan as they pulled away for a 13-3 win over Bell County. Clay jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the first two innings. Jordan White reached on an error leading off the game, stole second and went to third on a Tanner Smith single. Carnahan brought him home with a sac fly to deep left and Allen followed with his home run to make it 3-0. Trevor Sams added an RBI single later in the first and Smith singled home White in the second. The Bobcats answered in the home second as Jacob Rose launched a lead off double to deep left and then scored when Dylan Cox scorched a grounder that got through the Clay second baseman for an error and rolled all the way to the fence. Cox went to third on a ground out by Zach Turner and then scored as Austin North beat out an infield single to cut the lead to 5-2. North’s hit was an unusual one as it popped right off the end of his bat and hit in foul territory along the first base line, but it had so much top spin it rolled fair and got away form Clay’s first baseman when it hit off the bag. 5-3 was as close as Bell would get. Clay got an RBI double from Carnahan and then scored two more runs as Dustin Gross reached on an error. They put the game away in the sixth as Smith reached on an error and Carnahan followed with a two-run homer. Dylan Garrison added an RBI double, Nathaiel Huff an RBI ground out and Tanner Hoskins an RBI double to set the final at 13-3. Austin Dezarn went all six innings to pick up the win. He gave up three runs on five hits while striking out five and not walking a batter. Clay County (18-16) will play the winner of the North Laurel-Jackson County game on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the 49th District championship game at North Laurel. The Times-Tribune Jaguars win second straight 49th district title with win over Clay County By John Stepp
With a 6-3 win over the Clay County Tigers, the North Laurel Jaguars became back-to-back 49th District Champions on Monday night. The Jaguars were led by the bat of senior standout Marcus Carson who went 3-4 on the night with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. Carson also came on in relief in the sixth inning and closed out the game. North Laurel jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Carson and Ethan Maxey both reached based on singles, and were brought home on an RBI triple by sophomore Zach Hurley. Hurley later scored on a single by sophomore Logan Mallory to give the Jaguars a 3-0 lead. The Tigers answered in the bottom of the inning. Hurley walked the first two Clay County batters, both of whom scored on a single by sophomore Dustin Gross. Hurley battled back to retire the next three batters and maintain a 3-2 lead for the Jaguars. The Jaguars continued their heavy hitting in the second inning as Carson and 8th grader Wes Griebel each reached base on singles to open the inning. A sacrifice fly by Maxey scored Carson and Griebel later scored on an error to give North Laurel a 5-2 lead after two. Both teams were scoreless in the third and fourth innings, until North Laurel got on the board again in the top of the fifth. A single by sophomore Austin Rudder brought home Hurley to round out the scoring for the Jaguars and give them a 6-3 lead. Clay County looked to be clawing back in the bottom of the sixth. Gross reached base safely with a walk to open the inning and looked to have a chance to score on a double by sophomore Dylan Garrison. Carson got the ball in center and threw Gross out at home, followed by Garrison being thrown out at second. Hurley struck out the next Tigers’ batter to end the inning and allow the Jaguars to come away unscathed. The Tigers would add another run in the bottom of the seventh, but Carson caught Nathan Huff not looking to strike him out for the final out of the game, and give the Jaguars a 6-3 win. thetimestribune.com/sports/x730884167/Twice-as-Nice

Harlan Daily Enterprise Bears snap region skid against Clay County by John Middleton, Sports Editor
The Harlan County baseball program cleared a final hurdle on Monday, earning its first win in the 13th Region Tournament. The Black Bears rode dominant pitching and timely hitting to a 5-1 victory over Clay County in the opening round of the tournament. Conner Leisge pickup up right where he left off. In his first outing since helping to lead the Black Bears to a 52nd District championship, Leisge turned in another impressive performance on the mound against the Tigers. The junior right-hander struck out five batters, while allowing just three hits and no earned runs in five innings in the start. James Bond turned in two hitless innings of relief. Bond struck out four of the seven batters he faced to close out the win. Both teams put runners on in the first two innings, but were unable to generate any runs. Scotty Bailey drove in the first run of the game with an infield single. Bailey advanced to second on a Zach Jenkins groundout. Leisge then helped himself out at the plate with a clutch two-out single to left field that scored both base-runners. Clay County closed the gap to 3-1 with a run in the fourth inning. Dustin Gross led off the inning with a walk. Nate Sizemore came in as the courtesy runner for Gross. Sizemore advanced on a single by Dylan Garrison and then scored when Nathaniel Huff reached base on an error to right field. Harlan County quickly regained control with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Andrew Dozier started the inning with a single to left field. Rutherford reached base on an error to short. The runners advanced on a double steal. Boggs drove in both runners with a single up the middle of the infield. Boggs doubled and had two singles to power the Harlan County offense. Bailey, Leisge and Dozier each added a single. Clay County sent just 10 batters to the plate in the final three innings as the Bears held on for the win. Garrison, Adam Carnaham and Tanner Smith each had a single for Clay County’s only hits. Tanner Hoskins turned in a complete-game effort for the Tigers in defeat.
