Times Tribune Ajaycia Cotton of Clay County is the Girls Player of the Week By Les Dixon
Cotton leads the Lady Tigers in scoring with a 15.7 average, and continued her impressive play of late by scoring in double figures (27 points on nine-of-13 shooting) while scoring the game-winning basket during her team's upset win over Corbin. The Boys Player of the Week is Bryson Asher of North Laurel. The freshman center is starting to assert himself as one of, if not the best, center in the 13th Region. His 15-point, 12-rebound effort against crosstown rival South Laurel this past Friday not only helped guide his Jaguars past the Cardinals, but also garnered him this week's top boys' honor. www.thetimestribune.com/sports/x1186924799/Ready-for-A-Battle

Times Tribune 13th Region Prep Hoops Power Poll
Boys
1. Jackson Co. (11-5 overall, 5-1 vs. 13th Region foes) 2. Knox Central (9-7, 4-1) 3. Clay County (10-4, 5-1) The Tigers drop to third in this poll for the first time this season after dropping three straight games, dating back to the team's loss to Dacula, GA. in the Sunshine Classic. The fact the Tigers have lost three straight is as big a surprise as any this week. The good news for Clay County may be the fact that the team dropped three straight last January, but won the next 15 games to get to the Sweet Sixteen. Clay County will host Boyd County Saturday before traveling to Perry County Central Tuesday.
4. Corbin (11-5, 6-2) 5. Bell County (9-6, 8-2) 6. Harlan County (7-9, 3-2) 7. North Laurel (9-7, 3-2) 8. South Laurel (7-9, 2-3) 9. Harlan (9-3, 5-3) 10. Barbourville (11-5, 3-2) Girls
1. Bell Co. (11-3 overall, 6-0 vs. 13th Region foes) 2. Whitley County (13-4, 5-1) 3. Harlan County (12-4, 4-1) 4. Clay County (7-7, 4-3) 5. Corbin (14-4, 7-3) 6. Harlan (11-6, 7-3) 7. The Times-Tribune Boys teams establishing themselves as front-runners By Les Dixon
When the season began, Robert Marcum's Clay County Tigers were considered as hands down the team to beat in the region and rightfully so. The Tigers were the defending 13th Region champions, and picked up players such as Jake Allen and Trey Farmer to join Tyler McDaniel and Wes Wolfe. But things have changed a bit since late November. The Tigers lost at home to Knox Central and they are now 12-5 on the season after losing four of their last six games. So who has established themselves as the region's front-runner? Knox Central has played a tough schedule, but has still put together an impressive 11-7 season. Since dropping an 86-84 decision to Maryland's Largo High School on Dec. 30 at the Cumberland Falls Invitational, Brian Evans' squad has put together an impressive six-game win streak. During the six-game stretch, the Panthers have wins over Clay County, Bell County, Corbin and Barbourville, but I'm still not sold on tagging them as the region's top team. That honor goes to Jackson County at the present time. The Generals are basically newcomers when it comes to being tagged as the team to beat, but they have proven just how good they are by going 3-0 this past week to win the 13th Region All 'A' Classic Tournament. Jackson County also possesses the region's top player (Jordan Fox) along with one of the top coaches in the state in Greg Parrett. People forget Parrett guided the Jackson County Lady Generals to two 13th Region All 'A' Classic state championships back in the early 2000's. Parrett's Generals, captured their first 13th Region All 'A' Classic championship since 2001. The Generals are looking to make a deep run at the All 'A' Classic State Tournament, but they'll need to stay away from foul trouble. If the Generals have an Achilles' heel then it might just be their depth. The trio of Jordan Fox, Zach Lawson and Isaiah Collier might be the best in the region, and don't forget about Seth Bingham, he's as solid as they come. Jackson County rolled past the competition in the tournament, but did run in some trouble against Middlesboro. With that said, both Knox Central and Jackson County will get to see which team is the best when the Panthers pay a visit to McKee on Feb. 6. And a word to the wise, don't sleep on Clay County. 13th Region Top 10

Times-Tribune 13th Region Girls Notebook By Les Dixon
Once again, this is Clay County's district to lose. Even though there is one more district game to be played, the Lady Tigers will be the one seed with a win over Jackson County while North Laurel and the Lady Generals will battle things out in an elimination game once district tournament play begins. Oneida Baptist will be the four seed, and Red Bird is the five seed. Clay County is 2-3 during its last five games. Player of the Week Maci Morris, Bell County – When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Maci Morris answered the bell during Saturday's match-up with defending 13th Region champion Corbin, scoring a game-high 25 points during the Lady Bobcats' 69-57 win. She also added 14 points against Middlesboro earlier in the week, and a 15-point effort against Clay County a day later. Top 10 1. Whitley County (18-4) 2. Bell County (15-3) 3. Harlan County (15-5) 4. Corbin (16-7) 5. Clay County (10-10) 6. Lynn Camp (17-4) 7. Barbourville (11-9) 8. Harlan (14-8) 9. Middlesboro (8-11) 10. Times-Tribune 13th Region Boys Notebook By Les Dixon
The race for the 49th District's top seed is on, and right now everyone is eyeing Feb. 14th's match-up in Manchester between Jackson County and Clay County. Both teams are unbeaten at 2-0 while North Laurel has locked up the three seed while Oneida Baptist and Red Bird will be the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds, respectively. Whoever gets the No. 2 seed will have their hands full against North Laurel. Who is hot? The hottest teams in the region has to be Jackson County, Knox Central, South Laurel and Williamsburg, but with that said, each team (except Williamsburg) saw their respective win streaks end this week. Jackson County's six game win streak came to an abrupt halt after the Generals lost to Betsy Lane, 79-65, the Elite Eight of the All 'A' Classic State Tournament. Top 10 1. Jackson County (16-6) 2. Knox Central (12-8) 3. Bell County (12-8) 4. Clay County (12-7) 5. South Laurel (11-10) 6. Williamsburg (9-11) 7. Whitley County (12-9) 8. Barbourville (15-7) 9. Harlan (12-5) 10. Times-Tribune 13th Region Boys Prep Hoops Power Poll
1. Clay County (16-7 overall, 8-2 vs. 13th Region foes)
Much like they did a year ago at this time, the Tigers have found a groove. After Tuesday's 87-58 pounding of North Laurel the Jaguars have now won four straight and look to be back on track. Yes, the Tigers have lost two game to 13th Region competition, but it's still the consensus in this poll that Clay County is the best team in the region right now. Consecutive games against Jackson County on Friday and Tuesday will put the Tigers' top ranking to the test. The next two games will also decide the 49th District's top seed in the upcoming tournament.
2. Knox Central (14-9, 9-1) 3. Jackson County (18-7, 11-2) The Generals fall to the third spot thanks in part to last week's loss to Knox Central and the fact Clay County is playing better right now. A pair of wins against the Tigers could easily move Jackson County back to the top spot. After an 81-71 loss to Knox Central, Jackson County rebounded with wins over North Laurel and Oneida Baptist over the past week.
4. South Laurel (12-12, 6-5) 5. Bell County (14-10, 12-5) 6. Corbin (15-10, 9-6) 7. Whitley County (14-11, 8-5) 8. North Laurel (13-13, 6-7) 9. Barbourville (16-9, 8-4) 10. Harlan County (12-12, 6-3) See more at: www.thetimestribune.com/sports/x1783669023/13th-Region-Prep-Hoops-Power-Poll

Times-Tribune 13th Region Girls Prep Hoops Power Poll
1. Whitley County (21-5 overall, 13-2 vs. 13th Region foes) 2. Bell County (19-4, 14-1) 3. Corbin (18-7, 10-5) 4. Harlan County (18-6, 8-3) 5. Clay County (15-10, 8-4)
If teams in the 13th Region haven't taken notice yet, they should. The Lady Tigers have now won six straight and look to be rounding in to form as the regular season winds down. The Lady Tigers wrapped up the top seed in the 49th District long ago and if history is any indicator, they'll be a force to reckon with when postseason play gets underway. Clay County will host Jackson County Friday.
6. Harlan (17-10, 13-6) 7. Lynn Camp (19-5, 13-4) 8. Barbourville (12-10, 6-5) 9. North Laurel (10-15, 6-7) 10. Middlesboro (8-15, 6-10) See more at: www.thetimestribune.com/sports/x1783669023/13th-Region-Prep-Hoops-Power-Poll

Times Tribune 13th Region Prep Hoops Power Poll
Boys Top Five
1. Knox Central (16-9 overall, 10-1 vs. 13th Region foes) 2. Jacskon County (19-8, 12-3) 3. Clay County (17-8, 9-3)
If there is one team I wouldn't bet against when postseason play gets underway, it's the Clay County Tigers. Experience and tradition is worth quite a bit when this team is on the floor. Two of the Tigers' three regional losses have come to the two teams above them in this poll. The Tigers will host Middlesboro Friday in their regular season finale before facing North Laurel in the 49th District Tournament.
4. Corbin (17-10, 10-6) 5. South Laurel (13-14, 7-5) 6. Bell County (16-10, 14-5) 7. Whitley County (15-12, 9-5) 8. Harlan County (13-13, 7-3) 9. North Laurel (13-16, 6-8) 10. Middlesboro (9-18, 8-12) Girls Top Five
1. Whitley Co. (23-5 overall, 14-2 vs. 13th Region foes) 2. Bell County (21-4, 16-1) 3. Corbin (20-7, 12-5) 4. Harlan County (19-7, 8-4) 5. Harlan (17-10, 13-6) 6. Clay County (17-10, 10-4)
The Lady Tigers are as hot as any team in the 13th Region, picking up their eighth straight win Monday in a victory over South Laurel.
7. Lynn Camp (19-6, 13-4) 8. North Laurel (14-15, 10-7) 9. South Laurel (7-19, 5-14) 10. Barbourville (13-12, 7-7) www.thetimestribune.com/sports/x1783682171/13th-Region-Prep-Hoops-Power-Poll
