Red Bird falls to Lady DragonsBy JOHN HENSON - Managing EditorWhenever the Harlan Lady Dragons pressed in Thursday's season opener against visiting Red Bird, good things usually happened for them. After racing to an 11-0 lead with the help of 11 Red Bird turnovers in the first quarter, the Lady Dragons were unable to build on their quick start because they were often unable to hit the shots needed to set up their press. The Lady Cardinals rallied from a 12-point deficit in the third quarter to briefly take the lead in the fourth by hitting five of their first six shots. Red Bird then went cold itself, missing its final 10 attempts from the field as Harlan went on to a 55-51 win. “It was a terrible, terrible start,” Red Bird coach Tonya Asher said. “Harlan just set too fast a pace, and the girls couldn't seem to get comfortable. It was just chaos for them. They were going too fast. “We never did manage the whole game to really get on track like we could.” Red Bird had an opportunity to tie in the closing seconds, but Marie Jackson's 3-pointer was off the mark. Alexandria Allison hit a free throw for Harlan with 0.5 seconds left to seal the win as the Lady Cards scored only one point in the final five minutes. “I think it was the pressure. This is a new thing for these girls,” Asher said. “Harlan beat us pretty good last year, and so did Cumberland. Being in a tight-game situation is a totally new thing for us. We're learning to handle that pressure.” RED BIRD (0-2) Marie Jackson 2-8 4-9 8, Whitney Elam 6-14 3-4 19, Kelsey Dickerson 1-10 1-2 3, Kayla Brock 3-10 3-5 9, Sierra Nantz 5-9 0-4 10, Joella Fogleman 1-4 0-0 2, Diana Smith 0-0 0-0 0. Lynn Camp falls to Red Bird in first round of All "A" ClassicBy Jimbo Collins, The Times-TribuneThe Lynn Camp Lady Wildcats were knocked out of the first round of the All ‘A’ Classic at home by Red Bird Tuesday, 62-58. Red Bird (6-6) went on a 17-2 run to end the third quarter and held off Lynn Camp (5-10) in the fourth to advance. The teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter and Red Bird took a 16-14 lead into the second. Neither team was able to gain more than a four-point advantage in the first half. Lynn Camp outscored Red Bird 13-10 in the second quarter to take a 27-26 lead into half time. “They did really well with passing the ball and screening,” said Red Bird coach Tonya Asher. “It was something we just could not do anything with tonight. I thought coach Jones’ girls played really well from the first time I had seen them play.” Red Bird took over the game with 6:18 seconds left in the third. The Lady Cardinals’ Kayla Brock, who had eight of her 14 points in the third, scored consecutive baskets to start a 17-2 run to end the third quarter. “I basically told the girls to take the ball to the hole,” Asher said. “They were fouling us when we drove in to the inside. Our guard (Kelsey thingyerson) was a step or two quicker than their defender. I told them ‘girls let’s take the ball to the hole.’ We wanted to get to the line as much as we could.” The Lady Wildcats trailed 45-37 at the end of the third, but refused to give up. Lynn Camp chipped away at the Red Bird lead and got to within four on two occasions. The Lady Wildcats scored 21 points in the final period, the most in a quarter by either team, but were unable to overcome the deficit created in the third. Red Bird Lady Cards fall in All "A"By JARROD SHERMAN - Sports EditorThe Cumberland Lady Skins advanced to the 13th Region All "A" Classic championship game with a convincing 62-39 semifinal victory over Red Bird. The Lady Skins slipped past Red Bird 74-72 in their previous matchup. Cumberland coach John Bond was pleased that his team was better able to control the tempo this time around. "I thought we handled their pressure a lot better," he said. "Once we got settled down, we ran our offense a lot better than we did the last time." The Lady Skins trailed just once in the game - when senior guard Marie Jackson's free throw gave Red Bird a 1-0 lead with 7:04 to play in the first quarter. Cumberland answered with back-to-back baskets inside by freshman Samantha Sexton and senior Erika Letanosky to start a 9-1 run that also included a 3-pointer by Kendra Russell and a steal and layup by Letanosky. The Lady Skins scored the first seven points of the second quarter as Red Bird's offense went silent. The Lady Cardinals made two of 12 shots in the period and managed just six points. Robbie Curtis scored 15. C.R. Berry, a 5-11 senior guard, led Red Bird with 17 points and four assists. Junior guard Derek Davis contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds. Skins ground Cards in openerBy JARROD SHERMAN - Sports EditorCumberland turned in its best home performance of the year Tuesday, shooting 58 percent (31-for-53) from the floor en route to a 71-48 victory over Red Bird in the first round of the 13th Region All "A" Classic. The Redskins attempted just nine 3-pointers in the game, opting instead to drive to the basket for layup after layup. "They could take it to the hole on us about any time they wanted to, and the only time they didn't was when they were trying to get it to (center Desmond Johnson)," Red Bird coach John D. Wilson said. "They've got a good inside game and a good outside game. I think they'll win the tournament." The outcome could have been much worse for the Cardinals if not for the shooting prowess of Derek Davis. The junior guard poured in 26 points despite missing most of the second quarter after sustaining a cut over his right eye. "He got us back in the game," Wilson said. Whatever momentum the Cardinals regained, however, left when Davis had to leave the game early in the second period after apparently drawing an inadvertent elbow. He was treated on the bench and didn't return for the rest of the half. With Davis out, Red Bird had some success going inside to seniors Paul Hoskins and Kyle Peters. The duo combined for nine of the Cardinals' 13 points in the quarter. RED BIRD (8-7) Brandon Roberts 2-10 0-0 4, C.R. sentinel-echo.com Red Bird no contest in first-round rout By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — North Laurel coach Brad Sizemore got what he wanted from the Jaguars’ opening game of the 49th District Tournament. He also got a little more. North Laurel’s 113-46 win was easily the largest margin of victory of the season, topping a 31-point win over Casey County. It also marked the first time North Laurel topped 100 points this season. The season-high in offense had been 81 points in a loss to Wayne County. North Laurel had not scored over 100 points since beating Red Bird 103-53 in the 2010 49th District Tournament. The KHSAA does not list a higher scoring game in the history of North Laurel. The win puts North Laurel into a spot in next week’s 13th Region Tournament at The Arena in Corbin. LEXINGTON - Nine former high school coaches, athletes, officials, administrators or contributors make up the 26th class to be inducted into the Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of Fame. The class will first be recognized at the annual Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of Fame golf outing scheduled for Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at the Marriott Griffin Gate Resort in Lexington. The class of 2013 will be inducted in ceremonies scheduled for Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the Lexington Convention Center. The induction of the nine will bring the total number of individuals honored to 412. John D Wilson – The personification of the words sportsman and teacher, Wilson has dedicated nearly four decades of service at Cawood, Webster County and later at Red Bird Mission School. Wilson took over a Cawood team in 1974 that had never enjoyed a winning season and won four district titles in five years. Once he retired from the public school system, Wilson breathed new life into the boys’ basketball program at Red Bird. Often showing up in time to sweep the floor and pop the popcorn in the concession stand while his team warmed up, Wilson has provided opportunities to scores of student-athletes who may not have otherwise gotten a chance. Pascal Benson a multi sports star at Henderson High School in the mid-1950s. Julie Ditty one of Kentucky’s all-time tennis greats. Tyson Gay won three state championships in the 100 meters competing for Lafayette High School. Gay later became a three-time world champion and represented the United States Olympic team in 2008. Burney Jenkins has dedicated more than 35 years to Kentucky high school sports as a referee, an umpire and later as an assigning secretary. Roger Klein built a tennis power at Bellevue High School. Over the years his players included three state singles champions, five singles finalists, four doubles champions and six doubles finalists. Frank Miklavcic a longtime track and field and cross country coach at Paintsville and later Frankfort. Ron Myers a baseball coach at Elizabethtown High School. Jamie Walz Richey set 12 state basketball records and was twice named the Kentucky Female Athlete of the Year. Two other individuals have previously been voted into the Hall of Fame but declined induction at that time. Kelly Coleman (1989) and John Reynolds (1994) have yet to accept the honor. www.wkyt.com/wymt/sports/headlines/DawaharesKHSAA_Hall_of_Fame_class_of_2013_inductess_announced_156417685.html

Jason Holland
Fields' Notebook: Former Red Bird player takes over as coach at Montgomery County
Jason Holland had a good thing going as the Oldham County boys' basketball coach. He led the Colonels to 8th Region titles two of the last three years, and the program is well-stocked for the future. But Holland decided to leave Oldham County for Montgomery County where he will replace Happy Osborne. Holland said there are several reasons for his job change. He's from Clay County (where his mom still lives), he played high school ball at Red Bird and college ball at Berea. Holland went 92-38 in four years at Oldham County. Before that he was at Henry County five years. He will be Montgomery County's fourth coach in four years, following Osborne, Tony Wise and Keith Griesser. Oldham County didn't have to look far for its new boys' coach. Coy Zerhusen, a Colonels' assistant the past five years, will head the program. Zerhusen played at Scott County and Centre College. Jason Holland
Advocate Sports Former Red Bird player Jason Holland named new Indians coach By Dan Manley, Editor
Their names might not be household words. In fact, many haven’t even heard of the basketball mentors of new MCHS boys’ basketball coach Jason Holland. But rest assured, Holland comes well equipped to his new job as he steps into a program with heightened expectations after last year’s regional championship run and trip to the Sweet 16 Final Four. Holland takes over as the Indians’ new boss after leading the Oldham County Colonels to three straight 8th Region title games with two regional titles to their credit along with a trip to the Final Four. Why Montgomery County? Holland seemed to be just settling into a great job on the fringe of Louisville with a reported solid array of talent coming up. Jason Holland gives you the sense that he’d feel at home about anywhere, though. Basketball for Holland began at the Red Bird Mission school. He actually grew up at Beverly where there wasn’t even a stop sign to let you know you were there. You don’t hear a lot about Red Bird these days. The tiny school, coached by the legendary John D. Wilson, hasn’t been able to compete with the big boys of the 13th Region in recent years. But back in the 1997-98 season when Holland was there, the Cardinals finished 25-7 and lost to Clay County and the legendary coach Bobby Keith, 56-51, to deny Holland and his teammates a trip to the Sweet 16. As for his high school coach, Holland doesn’t have enough time to tell you what he thinks of Coach Wilson. From there Holland had the unique opportunity to play for legendary (there’s that word again) Coach Roland Wierwille, the late coach of the Berea College Mountaineers who not only won 451 games at the school in his career but also turned a lot of boys into men. One former player has said that short of enlisting in the Marines, playing for Roland Wierwille during his coaching prime was the best preparation for war that anyone could experience. Unfortunately for Holland, the player, he arrived at Berea along with players named Daniel Brown and Tony Goatley. Those two guards just happened to score a combined 4,149 points during their careers, which didn’t leave a lot of time on the floor for other guards. But Holland, as he had with John Wilson, learned a lot about basketball, about coaching and about life at Berea. He had some entry-level coaching positions at Richmond Model and Lincoln County and then went to Florida to coach for a short time. He came back to Kentucky to take the Henry County job. After a “three-win season” for openers, things got better at Henry County and it was obvious to others that Holland was an up-and-coming coach. That led him to the Oldham County job where after a 12-16 first year his teams had three highly successful years. Next stop—Montgomery County. www.msadvocate.com/morestory.aspx?storiesID=1381
