Albert Dennis Stillings, 74, West Laurel Road, London, Ky., passed away Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born May 10, 1938 in Manchester, he was the son of the late Sam and Edith Stillings. He was a retired military veteran having served in the Army during both the Korean War and Vietnam War. He was also a member of Horse Creek Holiness Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Linda Bergeron. Survivors include his wife, Wilma Reid Stillings, West Laurel Road, London; two daughters, Donna Napier and Patty Ruggles, both of London; a son, T.J. Stillings of Waynesville, Ga.; two brothers, Tony Stillings of Tennessee, and Robert Stillings of Indiana; two sisters, Elizabeth Hensley and Anna Pearl Stillings, both of Harlan, Ky.; 12 grandchildren, Preston Napier, Nicholas Napier, Travis Stillings, April Houston, Elizabeth Bagley, Chris Stillings, William Ruggles, Patricia Goff, Ashley Goff, Kim Maldinado, Eugene Goff and Melissa Roberts; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services were conducted December 7 at London Funeral Home Chapel with Bobby Helton, Jeff Lewis, and Bob Combs officiating. Burial followed in Herd Cemetery in Manchester. Pallbearers were Preston Napier, Nicholas Napier, Bobby Ruggles, Allan Peerce, Jamie Roberts and Chris Stillings. Honorary pallbeaers were T.J. Stillings and Gary Napier. In addition to his mother, Billy was also survived by his fiancé, Connie Ray of McKee; 2 children, Billy Jordan Peters of Clay County and Latosha Baeza of Glasgow; 2 step children, John Ray of Gray Hawk and Roxann Ray of Madison County; sister, Angie Whitaker of Madison County and by 2 brothers, Keith Peters and Ray Peters both of Tyner. Billy was blessed with 1 granddaughter, Lexi Baeza; 4 step grandchildren, Ashley, Mark, Matt & Mary Beth; 1 very special step grandson, Malachi Ray and by 2 step great grandchildren. Other than his father, Billy was also preceded in death by a son Tyler Wayne Peters and by a brother, Ricky Peters. Billy was of the Holiness Faith. Hazard Herald Dan Woods, founder and pastor of the Fairview Baptist Church
Dan Woods, 80, died Sunday, Dec. 30 at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset. He had lived in Indiana and Florida before returning home to Clay County in 1989, residing in Oneida. He was the founder and pastor of the Fairview Baptist Church, and enjoyed ginsenging and being around people. Above all, Dan was a loving father and grandfather, and enjoyed bringing the ministry to people, as he dedicated his life to the Lord. He was born March 25, 1932 at Saul, the son of the late John Woods and the late America Carmack Woods, and was also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Woods; son Chester Woods; brothers Felix and Chester Woods; grandchild Greg Woods. He is survived by sons Kenny Woods and wife Peggy of Oneida, Donnie Woods of Groveland, Fl., Jimmy Woods and wife Jean of Red Bird, John Woods and wife Lisa of Bloomfield, In., Dale Woods and wife Pam of Manchester, Dan B. Woods of Oneida, and Mark Woods and wife Keshia of Oneida; daughters Kathy Filegar and husband John of Montverd, Fl., Jean Woods of Barbourville, Cookie Ruetz and husband Steve of Montverd, and Tootsie Brown and husband Jimmy of Oneida; brother George Woods of Saul; sisters Violet Ross of Booneville, Helen Rice, Lavenia Barger, Emma Gay and Cassie Mills, all of Saul, Rachel Gay of Oneida, and Martha Gay of Lily, Ky.; 22 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of step-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday Jan. 2 at the Fairview Baptist Church in Oneida with Bob Rice, Jesse Martin, Harold Godsey, and Carl Brown officiating. Steve Asher, native of Red Bird
Steve Asher, 59, of Lily, formerly of Red Bird, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2012 at the Baptist Regional Medical Center. He was born on May 5, 1953 at Beverly, KY to the late Malcom and Fannie Bailey Asher. After the death of his parents, two great ladies, Georgia Asher Shumate and Clara Asher, his parents-in-law, Wilson and Myrtle Slusher helped to raise and care for him. Steve had been a member and Deacon of the Cow Fork Primitive Baptist Church at Beverly and after moving to Lily he was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church for several years. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Vietnam Era. He had worked at the Red Bird Mission for 16 years in maintenance and was a bus driver and he had assisted in coaching basketball. After moving to Lily, he had worked at Napa Auto Parts and was a night watchman. Steve enjoyedplaying as "Santa Claus" to all the children who met him and no matter when someone needed help, he was always there to offer whatever assistance they needed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Chelsey Brooke Asher; four brothers, Lonnie Dean Asher, John Bailey, Orville Asher and James Edgar Asher. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Linda Ann Slusher Asher; three children, Stephanie M. Brock and husband, Gene; James Robert "Jim Bob" Asher and wife, Serena and Allison Asher; nine grandchildren, three of whom he raised as his own, Miranda Messer, Jordan Asher and Lila Kiara Asher; Alicia Blevins and husband, Wayne; Jenna Pogue and husband, Jonathan; Wesley Steele, Kaitlyn Asher, Kristen Asher and Joshua Asher; Steve was looking forward to becoming a great-grandfather in February; four sisters and their husbands, Barbara Jean and Kenneth Thacker; Sarah and David Hobbs; Charlotte and Ed Hatmaker and Glinda and Bob Bondarek; five brothers, Paul Asher and wife, Debbie; Malcom Asher and wife, Tonya, Earl Asher Lee and wife, Donna ; Odie Asher Carroll and wife, Wanda and his brother and best friend, Winston Asher; sister-in-law, Flo Asher. He leaves behind a host of sister-and brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Services were Friday at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hershell Walker and Rev. James Slusher. Music was by Hershell Walker and Della and Lloyd Asher. Burial was in the Slusher/Asher Cemetery at Red Bird, KY. Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews, Wesley Steele, Joshua Asher, Jordan Asher, Cody Slusher, Edgar Dean Asher and Wayne Blevins. Lucy Baker, native of Red Bird
Lucy (Lucie) Baker, 93, of Indianapolis, was called home to be with God on January 3, 2013. She was born January 1, 1920 to the late Alec and Anna Saylor in Red Bird Kentucky. She was a mighty prayer warrior and helped to establish several churches and was instrumental in changing lives of many people for Jesus. She was a member of House of Refuge Church on Keystone Ave and her affiliations included New Beginnings Assembly of God and House of Prayer Tabernacle. She was married on January 23, 1934 to Matt Baker. He preceded her in death in 1996. Survivors include her 4 children, Norma (James) Bray, the late Maurice (Nana Jean) Baker, Joyce (Charles) George, Dwight (Emma) Baker, all of Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren, she had 14 brothers and sisters with 12 preceding her in death, many nieces and nephews. Hazel M. (Sizemore) Hubbard, age 78 passed away peacefully Friday morning, March 1, 2013 at her home in Northern Brown County. By her side, was her loving husband of 63 years, Odus Hubbard and her family. Odus and Hazel were married on February 21, 1950 in Manchester, Kentucky. Hazel was born in Manchester, KY on August 10, 1934 to the late Millard and Lou Ellen (Napier) Sizemore. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and homemaker. Hazel is survived by her husband; children: Sandra Sue Buckler of Greenwood, Melissa Ann (Jerry) Williams and Douglas Hubbard both of Trafalgar. She will be remembered by her daughter in law: Connie Hubbard of Trafalgar; 11 grandchildren: Kim Keller, Lisa Couch, Sabrina Mix, Kevin, Jeff & Eric Eisenmenger, Angela, Amanda, Michael & Matthew Hubbard and Christopher Williams; and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter: Darlene Eisenmenger; one son: Donald R. “Donnie” Hubbard; and siblings: Addie & Gracee Sizemore, Hiram, David, Sidney, Felix & Howard Sizemore. Hazel enjoyed reading her Bible, playing her guitar and singing Christian songs. She loved spending time with her family and they enjoyed her cooking & baking, especially her homemade biscuits. Hazel also enjoyed traveling with her husband, canning, sewing & crocheting. The Rev. Burt Mize will conduct a funeral service at 11 am Tuesday at Meredith – Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Hazel Sizemore Hubbard, born in Clay County
Hazel M. (Sizemore) Hubbard, 78, passed away peacefully Friday morning, March 1, 2013 at her home in northern Brown County. By her side was her loving husband of 63 years, Odus Hubbard, and her family. Odus and Hazel were married on Feb. 21, 1950 in Manchester, Ky. Hazel was born in Manchester, Ky. on Aug. 10, 1934 to Millard and Lou Ellen (Napier) Sizemore, who preceded her in death. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and homemaker. Hazel is survived by her husband; children, Sandra Sue Buckler of Greenwood, and Melissa Ann (Jerry) Williams and Douglas Hubbard, both of Trafalgar. She will be remembered by her daughter in law, Connie Hubbard of Trafalgar; 11 grandchildren, Kim Keller, Lisa Couch, Sabrina Mix, Kevin, Jeff and Eric Eisenmenger, Angela, Amanda, Michael and Matthew Hubbard and Christopher Williams; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Darlene Eisenmenger; one son, Donald R. “Donnie” Hubbard; and siblings, Addie and Gracee Sizemore, Hiram, David, Sidney, Felix and Howard Sizemore. Hazel enjoyed reading her Bible, playing her guitar and singing Christian songs. She loved spending time with her family and they enjoyed her cooking and baking, especially her homemade biscuits. Hazel also enjoyed traveling with her husband, canning, sewing and crocheting. Funeral services were March 5 at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Burial followed at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown. Jimmy Thompson, 71, Ky. 490, East Bernstadt, Ky., passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013, at his residence. Born July 5, 1941 in Clay County, Ky., he was the son of the late Charlie and Mabel Wagers Thompson. He was a self-employed truck driver, and member of East Bernstadt Church of God. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Rodney Thompson; a granddaughter, Heather Renee Thompson; two brothers, Milton and Charlie Thompson Jr.; and a nephew, Calvin Thompson. Survivors include his wife, Janie Bowling Thompson, of East Bernstadt; a son, Randall Thompson and wife Lynn, of East Bernstadt; a granddaughter, Tiffany Thompson and a great-granddaughter, Kiera Thompson, both of East Bernstadt; three brothers, Merl Thompson and Harold Wayne Thompson, both of East Bernstadt, and Harvey Thompson, London; and a sister, Pauletta Bowling, of East Bernstadt. Daisy Smith, 94, of London, Ky., passed away at Saint Joseph London, Tuesday, March 12, 2013. She was born on February 15, 1919, in Clay County, Ky., the daughter of the late Huey and Martha Bruner Hammons. She was united in marriage to Robert Smith, who preceded her in death. She is survived by nine children, Verlois Bowling, Lawrence Smith, Willa Dean Sizemore, Estill Smith and wife, Phyllis, Dewey Smith and wife, Brenda, Pearl Richardson, Leroy Smith and wife, Glynna, and Gary Wayne Smith and wife, Irene, all of London, and Carolyn Sue Caldwell and husband, Thaddeus, of Bledsoe, Ky. She was also survived by one sister, Phoebe Allen, of Indianapolis, Ind.; one brother, Joe Hampton, of Bay City, Mich.; 48 grandchildren, 92 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren; plus a host of other friends and relatives to mourn her passing. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by five children, Verlie Burnett, Ray, Sherman, Charles and Glenn Smith. Lee Etta Gadberry, 82, wife of the late Charles J. Gadberry, entered into rest Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at University Hospital in Hephzibah, GA. Funeral services were held March 22 at Southside Baptist Church with Reverend Wayne Todd officiating. Mrs. Gadberry will lie in state for one hour prior to the service. Interment followed in Mills Springs National Cemetery in Nancy, KY. Mrs. Gadberry, daughter of the late Warren and Dora Risner Alsept, was born in Pikeville, KY, and was a homemaker. She is survived by her daughters, Myra J. Calhoun, of Hephzibah, and Sherry L. Gadberry Turner, of Manchester, KY; her brothers, Dona Alsept, of Hazard, KY, and Herbert Alsept, of Redding, CA; her sister Eleanor Asher, of Happy, KY; her grandsons, Anthony Gibson, Dwayne Gibson, Jordan Gadberry Turner, Zackery Calhoun, Edwin Calhoun, and W. Donald C. White, 80, died on April 3, 2013. He was born Aug 13, 1932 in Manchester, KY to the late Edward G. and Addie L. White. Don was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and served as a captain in the US Air Force. He was a retired builder and land developer. He was a member of Gardenside Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and served as a deacon for many years. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth A. White; two sons, Donnie White (Vicki) and Tim White (Amy), and one daughter, Karen Foley (Allen); 8 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Ronald White and a sister, Reda House. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell White and Norman White. Margaret Ruth Couch was born January 17, 1946 in Leslie County, KY to the union of the late Howard Wilder and the late Ethel Couch Wilder. She departed this life on Tuesday, April 09, 2013 at the Greg & Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center at Hazard, KY. She was 67 years of age and was residing at Woodson Branch Road, Hyden, KY at the time of her passing. Margaret was a homemaker and a life long resident of Leslie County. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, working in her flowers and going to auctions. Most significantly, she enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. Retired Commander Robert R. Rickard, age 90, of Oak Ridge, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 28, surrounded by his loving family. Robert was born Oct. 22, 1922, in York, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Katherine Rickard and his brother, James Edward. Robert is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Anna Lee, daughters Emily Ann Rickard, Katherine (Brant) Locklier of Anniston, Ala., and son Russell (Anita) Rickard, three grandchildren, Paul (Chyrl) Rickard, Shawna (Andrea Smith) Rickard, and Julia (Max) Miranda of Oxford, Ala., and two great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Trevor Rickard. Robert grew up in Thomas, W. Va., and joined the CCC’s prior to attending and graduating from Berea College, Ky. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II and studied engineering and military courses at Columbia University, New York, N.Y., and Penn State College (University). He was commissioned an officer at St. John's Cathedral in New York. Robert was Executive Officer on his ship (LCS 80), serving in the South Pacific Corridor. After the war, Robert returned to Berea, Ky., where he met the love of his life, Anna Lee Allen from Clay County, Ky. They were married in 1947 in Oakland, Md. In the fall of 1947, Robert and Anna Lee moved to Oak Ridge, where Robert began his distinguished career as an analytical chemist. He retired from ORNL in 1982. He was a published author of many scientific articles and books. He had a passion for science and literature. Robert was an outstanding athlete, playing collegiate baseball and basketball and was an avid golfer. He loved to travel, enjoying numerous trips with his family and friends across America and Europe. Always a gentleman, Robert was a generous friend to many. He was a long-time member of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church, Knoxville.
