Eddie Albert of "Green Acres" was born on this date. When he moved from New York to Hooterville he was always elbow deep in major repairs. Spring means that things in and around your house soon will be requiring attention, too -- like your lawn. After a long winter snooze it's time to get your lawn mower out of mothballs. If it hasn't had a checkup since Nixon was president, it's time to clear the air -- literally. Like a car, a poorly tuned mower runs roughly, guzzles gas and emits pollution. First change the air filter; the mower then will use less gas and put out fewer hydrocarbon emissions. Next change the oil; that'll reduce friction and fuel consumption. Then change the sparkplug; your mower will start more easily and run more smoothly and cleanly. This year even the National Wildlife Foundation urges homeowners to tune up their mowers for a better, cleaner, more energy-efficient summer. While you're cutting grass, cut emissions, too.

Medication prescribed for depression, especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) often lower libido as much as the depression does.
MORE THAN 80% OF PEOPLE WHO TAKE SSRI'S DO NOT ACHIEVE ORGASM.
Blood pressure medications, along with medicine prescribed for anxiety, can also lower the male libido. Patients need to let their doctors know so that they can try various medications which might not affect them as much.

This'll Probably Make You Yawn
We don't really know what causes yawning, although there are many speculations.
55 percent of people will yawn within 5 minutes of seeing someone else yawn.
Fewer people will "catch" a yawn if only the mouth is shown in a video.
Blind people yawn after hearing someone yawn.
Reading about yawning can cause many people to yawn.
Chimpanzees are the only other animals that can "catch" yawns from each other.
Patients who are taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) yawn more often. The excessive yawning seems to peak in the first three months of taking the medication.

Sleep Paralysis
Sleep paralysis is partial or complete temporary paralysis just after or before falling asleep. It may last minutes, before that person returns to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, a phase of the sleep cycle, or wakes up. The inability to move or speak may be accompanied by hallucinations. Often the hallucination is the feeling that an evil presence is in the room.
Certain factors seem to correlate to sleep paralysis: disruption of normal sleep patterns; stress; and medications such as sleeping pills and ADHD medications. Narcoleptics are more likely to have the condition.
Sleep paralysis usually happens near to REM sleep when the brain is dreaming but the voluntary motor (muscle) system is shut down (except for some involuntary twitching). As the brain becomes semi-conscious, the muscles may still be paralyzed. To try and get yourself out of sleep paralysis quicker, move your eyes from side to side, blink or grimace.
If you suffer from sleep paralysis, try to get into a good sleep routine. If this doesn't work, your doctor can prescribe medication that might help.

Berries for Your Blood Pressure Don't think of them as a treat. Berries should get daily play in your diet -- especially if you're at all concerned about your blood pressure.
People with high BP who ate berries daily as part of a study saw a 7-point dip in their systolic blood pressure -- after just 8 weeks of berry love!

Weak Ankles
If you have weak ankles or an ankle injury, you can strengthen the joint with exercises. If you have broken the ankle or torn a ligament, it is best to be supervised to make sure you are doing these correctly and not making your injury worse. Any exercises that require you to balance on 1 leg are recommended. Exercises which force your ankle to stabilize your leg are also good eg. single leg squats. You can start off holding on to something for support, and eventually should do the exercises unsupported with eyes closed.

Red Meat Linked To Colon Cancer The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) concluded in a recent report that the evidence linking red meat (beef, pork and lamb) to colon cancer is now so strong, it should prompt a nationwide reduction in red meat consumption. They recommend limiting red meat consumption to no more than 515 grams (cooked) per week and to avoid processed meat. The report indicated, that for every 100g over this amount that is eaten per day, the risk of colorectal cancer increases by 30%.
AICR Nutrition Advisor, Karen Collins, said, "The meat-and-potatoes mindset is slowly killing us. We need to break ourselves of the notion that we need a hunk of red meat at every meal."
She also said, "Smokers are a subset of people whose chosen habit places them at much higher risk for lung cancer, but this is different. Everybody eats. And everybody who eats a diet high in red meat is at a higher risk of colon cancer. If there were a drug that was found to increase risk of a disease by 30 percent, it would get pulled off the shelves."
The AICR says that reducing the amount of red meat eaten every week is an important cancer-protective step. Although choosing lean cuts plays a protective role in heart health, diets high in red meat - regardless of the fat content - increase the risk for colorectal cancer.
If you want to find out more details about the link between red meat and cancer, visit: www.aicr.org/redmeat.
AICR is a member of the World Cancer Research Fund International.

Chicken Soup For A Cold
Chicken soup relieves cold and flu symptoms by:
* acting as an anti-inflammatory agent
* speeding up the movement of mucus through the nose, helping to relieve congestion and limiting the amount of time viruses are in contact with nasal lining.
Many canned chicken soups work as well as those made from scratch.

Beverage Wars: Juice vs. Tea
Which is better for your brain -- a glass of juice or a cuppa tea?
When it comes to preventing Alzheimer's, juice may have the edge. In a recent study, three servings a week reduced Alzheimer's risk impressively.
Drink Up
Polyphenols in juice may be one of the best things that's ever happened to your brain. The ones in apple and citrus juices, in particular, are very brain friendly. That's because they're able to cross the blood-brain barrier. Once inside your head, they can protect neurons from a damaging chemical associated with Alzheimer's. Some of those polyphenols, like quercetin, also squelch inflammation.

Opening Your Pool
A swimming pool requires regular care and maintenance. A few simple steps taken when opening the pool for swim season will ensure safe and healthful conditions. First, clean out any debris in the pool using a pool brush and vacuum. Tighten bolts at the diving board, ladder and slide, and give each a good going-over with detergent and water. Check the pool lining for cracks and tears, make needed repairs and raise the water in the pool to the middle of the skimmer opening. Check to make sure the pump, filter and heater are operating properly and are free from leaks. Take the filter apart and clean it for the season. Start the filter, run it for at least two hours and collect a water sample for analysis by a pool-water professional. Adjust pH and chlorine as needed and begin routine maintenance. And that's the On The House tip for today.

Stress Tip
Feel that pounding headache? Is that stress? Or is that the cumulative effect of stress? Is it just the proverbial straw on the camel's back?
Stress is like thirst. By the time your body says, "Hey, I'm thirsty," it means that your body is really dehydrated.
Your body puts up with the lack of water for the longest time, before it gets on the phone to your brain screaming: "Get me to the water, will ya?"
Stress is exactly the same. It builds one layer on top of the other. The headache is a sign that you need to stop now. Not tomorrow. Not next week.
You brain needs to get it's drink of 'relaxation' right away.
Your dehydrated brain needs peace and quiet. Re-hydrate your brain today. Stop. Slow down. Take a sip of relaxation. Take two sips.
Feels better already, doesn't it?
