Smoky MountainsWelcome to the first in a series about great vacation spots that are popular with Clay County residents. The first vacation spot we will look at is the Smoky Mountains. The centerpiece of the Smokies is the Smoky Mountain National Park. The first place we will visit is the Sugarlands Visitors Center which is located at the junction of US Hwy 441 and Hwy 73. If you are coming from Pigeon Forge you can avoid the Gatlinburg traffic by taking the Gatlinburg By-Pass which comes out on US 441 just inside the entrance to the park. Inside the Sugarlands Visitor Center is a museum and gift shop. This picture was taken of a stuffed bear which is one of the several animals on display in the museum.Click Here for the ClayLive.com Photo Gallery

The highest point you can visit in the Smokies is Clingmans Dome. After you drive 10 miles into the park from Gatlinburg you turn left and go seven more miles to the parking lot. At this point you will have to walk one-half mile up hill to get to the dome. This photo was taken by 'Pic Mom' from the observation deck at Clingmans Dome.Click Here for the ClayLive.com Photo Gallery

John Wilson sits on a bench and waits on the older folk as they trudge up the side of the Smoky Mountains. Several benches, which seat around ten people are available at several places on the one-half mile walk up the hill to Clingsmans Dome. Despite the fact we went to the top of the Mountain when the temperature was in the 90's we needed a light jacket and blankets to stay comfortable!Click Here for the ClayLive.com Photo Gallery

On the drive back from the Smoky Mountains we had the opportunity to stop at the top of Clinch Mountain and take in the beautiful view. This picture was taken at the Clinch Mountain Overlook.Click Here for the ClayLive.com Photo Gallery

Mill Closing Temporarily At Levi Jackson State ParkThe mill at Levi Jackson State Park will be temporarily closed for three months while work is carried out to improve water flow to the mill. McHargue’s Mill is a working reproduction along the Little Laurel River that has authentic interior works and millstones. Part of the work includes dredging of a pond that is used to provide water for the mill. The mill normally closes on Labor Day weekend so it will not re-open until next Memorial Day. However, cornmeal from the mill will still be sold at the park museum and campground. The rest of the park – the museum, campground, pool, and mini-golf will remain open. The Kentucky State Park System is composed of 52 state parks plus an interstate park shared with Virginia. The Department of Parks, an agency of the Commerce Cabinet, operates 17 resort parks with lodges -- more than any other state. Each year, Kentucky parks draw 7 million visitors and contribute $317 million to the economy. For more information on Kentucky parks go to: www.parks.ky.gov
