Missionary Moment
Pushing Back Spiritual Darkness [Connecticut] JOSHUA SMITH is the worship and arts pastor for a church plant in Connecticut. There is a spiritual darkness there. Mediums, psychics and healers are often the ones New Englanders turn to in their search for spiritual insight. Unfortunately, Christianity and the church are rarely considered as sources for guidance. Many consider Christianity a dying movement that doesn’t relate to their everyday needs, much less their eternal needs. But with your help through the Cooperative Program, people in Connecticut are coming to Christ. Joshua asks Christians to pray for God to continue to provide resources and safety for him and his family as they serve there. The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Hockey, An Unreached People GroupA youth and young adult evangelism specialist with the Minnesota-Wisconsin Baptist Convention, STEPHANIE SMITH also serves as a certified athletic trainer for amateur hockey teams in Minnesota. Her work in hockey sports medicine gives her the opportunity to connect with athletes and discover ministry needs in this traditionally unchurched and unreached “people group.” As a North American missionary, her ministry is empowered by our support of the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. Stephanie also helps local churches learn how they can reach out to youth in their own communities. Let's pray for Stephanie and her husband, Ross, as they share the gospel in a region where one in nine residents has some type of connection to hockey. STATEMENT: Christians who give generously and regularly to God through their church can be good stewards of both giving and influence. In giving, we grow spiritually and influence others to grow, also. The Middle Atlas Berbers"JOHN and KAREN FORTNER (not their real names) and their three children work among the Middle Atlas Berbers in North Africa. There isn't a complete Bible in the primary dialect of the country. When the Fortners share the gospel, they must do so orally. Our commitment to fulfilling the Great Commission through the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering provides the Fortners the time, resources, and training needed to learn this difficult language. John and Karen share with friends and acquaintances. Their children share with friends at school. Pray for the Middle Atlas Berbers, most of whom have never heard the gospel. Pray for believers who meet in secret to avoid persecution to be emboldened by the Holy Spirit to share openly. Ask God to give wisdom to those who are translating the Bible into the Middle Atlas Berbers' heart language. 2 Corinthians 8:7-8 Now as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us ---excel also in this grace. I am not saying this as a command. Rather, by means of the diligence of others, I am testing the genuineness of your love." Fatma and AhmedOnly a few believers live in the Middle Eastern country where DOROTHY MITCHELL (not her real name) serves. Both Fatma and Ahmed received New Testaments years ago from workers who were expelled from the country. However, these Muslims haven't read them. Fatma cannot read. Ahmed lacks the curiosity. Fatma loves God with all her heart; she prays He will show her what the truth is as she cautiously hears the facts of the gospel. God's Spirit is moving in the hearts of people like Fatma and Ahmed, thanks in part to our support of the Cooperative Program. Ahmed has advanced liver disease and knows that death approaches. While he says he is ready for death, he doesn't believe the story of Jesus, though he admits its beauty. Pray for salvation for this family of 10 and many others as Dorothy works with them. STATEMENT: We wrestle with what the Bible teaches about how to manage and use money. We sometimes even rebel against giving it to God through the church. However, God patiently urges us to give willingly, because giving is a major source of happiness. Jennifer's Life on the Santee ReservationJENNIFER MAYFIELD developed a deep burden for Native Americans after hearing NAMB missionary Alpha Goombi's testimony. Today, Jennifer is a Mission Service Corps missionary serving as missions director for Santee Reservation in Nebraska. Jennifer began her ministry teaching lessons including parenting skills, child development, and budgeting in homes. Recently, she became the diabetes educator for the Santee Health Center. This allows daily opportunities to share Christ with Native Americans living on the reservation. She also assists fellow missionaries, Ron and Alpha Goombi, with Bible clubs and Vacation Bible School for the Santee, Omaha Indian, and Winnebago Reservations. Our gifts to the Cooperative Program are making a difference in the lives of those living on these reservations. Pray that God will provide many opportunities for Jennifer to share Christ with these Native Americans. Exodus 25:1-2 The Lord spoke to Moses: Tell the Israelites to take an offering for Me. You are to take My offering from everyone whose heart stirs him. Deborah Ricks and Cleveland HopeDEBORAH RICKS is a native Ohioan who grew up in the suburbs of Cincinnati. Today, she is a USC2 missionary serving as mobilization associate for Cleveland Hope. Part of NAMB's Strategic Focus Cities initiative, Cleveland Hope is a unified and strategic approach to missions and evangelism to reach this metropolitan area. As mobilization associate, Deborah is responsible for bringing teams from all over the country to serve in the Cleveland area conducting sports camps, Vacation Bible School, and other activities that will show Cleveland the love of Jesus Christ. From small rural settings to large metropolitan cities, God is blessing our commitment to reach people through the Cooperative Program. Pray for volunteers to respond by coming and sharing the gospel in Cleveland. STATEMENT: Giving is partly motivatied by one's attitude. Jacob's attitude toward God was one of reverence and gratitude. As Jacob's attitude toward God motivated him to give a tenth, our attitude toward God influences our giving. Arab Believers Reaching Libya"Limited American access to Libya does not slow BILL and KIMBERLY PAYTON (not their real names) in their efforts to reach Libyan Arabs for Christ. God is using them to train, mentor, and support believers from neighboring Arab countries to reach this difficult land. The Holy Spirit has been moving in unprecedented ways in the church of Northern Africa and the Middle East. Arab believers are leaving their home countries to move into Libya for full-time service. Because we believe in working with sister Baptist churches through the Cooperative Program, the Paytons are able to train Arab workers willing to serve in Libya. Teams of believers go on short trips for outreach and evangelism. The need is great for consistent seed-sowing and follow-up visits for discipleship and church planting. This week, pray for the Paytons and for those who are following God's call to reach out to Libya. Genesis 28:18, 22 Early in the morning Jacob took the stone that was near his head and set it up as a marker. He poured oil on top of it. This stone that I have set up as a marker will be God’s house, and I will give to You a tenth of all that You give me." Audios, Videos and Radio DramasNICK and NATALIE SHEPHERD (not their real names) work closely with believers from all over the world to introduce the “Covered” people group to Christ, thanks in part to our desire to fulfill the Great Commission through the Cooperative Program. The Shepherds produce and distribute strategic, creative audio/video recordings to communicate the gospel among the Covered. Through intercessory prayer, family to family witness, and community help projects, the hope is that that millions of Covered families across the earth will be transformed by Christ. A radio drama about Covered families who follow Jesus is being developed, and audio portions of the New Testament are available on the Internet for the Covered. Stories of the Bible in local dialects are available, as well as a brand new evangelistic video. Pray that these seeds will be widely sown and will bear lasting fruit among Covered communities. STATEMENT: When a Christian gives, giving becomes confession that Christ is Lord. Our giving each Sunday is a vital part of our confession of faith in Christ. The Pulse of College StudentsKeeping his heart and head on the pulse of college students today, North American missionary JOHN RAMIREZ is rewriting the script of collegiate ministry strategies as he serves in the New England area. John leads college students to develop a real and relevant relationship with Christ. The number one priority is meeting the students’ needs, first through Christ's love, and then teaching them about Christ through Bible study. God uses our commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program to impact campuses across America. Pray for students' lives to be changed through a relationship with Christ, and that their lives would impact the world as nearly one in four of the world's potential leadership studies in New England area colleges or universities. Luke 7:37-38 And a woman in the town who was a sinner found out that Jesus was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house. She brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil and stood behind Him at His feet, weeping, and began to wash His feet with her tears. She wiped His feet with the hair of her head, kissing them and anointing them with the fragrant oil. Vision and DirectionTHOM THORNTON is a North American missionary serving as the State Director for Collegiate Ministries for the Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware. His primary responsibility is to set the vision and direction of collegiate ministries for the convention. We are partnering with Thom in this ministry as we faithfully participate in the Cooperative Program. Thom supervises campus ministers and gives advice when needed. His call to campus ministry comes from a college experience where campus ministry was very instrumental in his spiritual development and the discovery of his spiritual gifts. Pray that the campus ministers Thom supervises will be effective in reaching out to college students and sharing Christ’s love. STATEMENT: When we give, we serve God. Our giving helps to continue God's redemptive activity. We are redeemed by grace, but our discipleship is expressed by helping others. Our giving is one way to minister to others in Christ's name. Healthy Deliveries and Spiritual BirthsJULIE KIDMAN (not her real name), a registered nurse, coordinates the Hebron Health Teaching Project in Africa, which began one year ago. The project engages 30 pregnant women and their families from the unreached people of the Horn of Africa. Through communicating valuable information, the teachers are earning trust and respect, leading to families' openness to hear of the transforming work of Christ. Many teachers now speak regularly of their Christian faith and of the Bible. The result: healthy deliveries and spiritual births. In the past few months, five people have become believers. God is blessing our support of the Cooperative Program. Pray for the reduction of HIV/AIDS among these people, as well as for fewer infant and maternal deaths. Pray for growth of new believers and for continued protection of the teachers as they share the good news of the Great Physician. Matthew 25:35,40 For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; And the King will answer them, "I assure you: Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me." Prayer RequestedGod is working among the rural Dominicans in San Juan de la Maguana in the Dominican Republic. He is using our faithfulness to the Cooperative Program to help raise two growing, reproducing churches as well as a number of other Bible storying groups. Pray for STEVE and MARILEE FLOOK to be sensitive to areas where God would have new groups started. Pray also for the salvation of those attending the groups and churches. Pray that each new believer will catch a vision to reach others. Pray for a great harvest of new believers and churches. STATEMENT: We have victory in Christ. Because of that victory, we are to abound in the work of the Lord. Since Christian commitment and material blessings cannot be separated, a part of our abounding work is giving. Mission Field-Kentucky's Turfway RacetrackDiverse flocks with unique needs are the norm at Kentucky's Turfway Racetrack where PATRICIA POPE serves as Mission Service Corps missionary. She spends much of her time at the Community Center feeding people, meeting food and clothing needs, transporting individuals to doctors, leading Bible studies, and assisting with worship services. Nearly 70 percent of the resident backside track employees Pat works with are Spanish speaking. Representing 17 countries, the workers have a wide range of educational experiences and spiritual exposure. Because of our commitment to making a difference through the Cooperative Program, Pat is able to spread Christ's love by attending to physical as well as spiritual needs. Let's pray for Pat to be bold in her witness as she shares Christ with racetrack employees. 1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my dear brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the Lord’s work, knowing that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. High Energy, A Must for Jeff HillJEFF HILL loves youth. He serves as Mission Service Corps missionary and youth pastor of The Sanctuary church in Toronto, Canada. In September 2001, when The Sanctuary first began, he had a youth group of two. Today Jeff leads a team that provides a varied ministry for over 50 students. Jeff uses his high energy attitude to coordinate mission teams coming to Oakville and to give leadership to the World Changers event. All of this is possible because we believe in working with sister churches through the Cooperative Program. Taking the Challenge SeriouslyChristians and churches are scattered across the Central American landscape. When the roads turn from pavement to dirt, spreading the gospel becomes more difficult. GARY and SIS TUFTS work to equip national believers to go to areas of significant need. In one Central American country, an association of 14 churches has taken the challenge seriously. In nine months, nine new groups formed. Our love for people and consistent support of the Cooperative Program are helping to impact these hard to reach areas. Where the gospel has had the least impact or exposure, the Tufts are doing all they can to saturate them with gospel tracts, Bibles, cassettes, and CDs. Pray for Gary and Sis as they follow up with those who respond to the good news and start new house churches. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. French Creole Professionals in GuadeloupeIn 1998, AL and JUDY GARY began planting churches among French Creole professionals in Guadeloupe. With the help of Cooperative Program gifts from churches like ours, they began working with lawyers. Now they have focused on developing relationships with schoolteachers. The Garys meet weekly with a family who has shown interest in the gospel. Several of the women in this family are teachers. A few have made decisions for Christ. The family will begin meeting soon with a house church leader on a regular basis. Pray for the gospel to continue to spread among the professional community in Guadeloupe. 1 Corinthians 16:2 On the first day of the week, each of you is to set something aside and save to the extent that he prospers, so that no collections will need to be made when I come. A Nehemiah Church PlanterJASON DAVIS is a North American Mission Board missionary serving as a Nehemiah church planter in the fast growing community of Spring Hill, Tennessee. Still in the early stages of starting the Grace Park Church, Jason spends much of his time building relationships and focusing on small groups, Sunday worship gatherings, and servant evangelism projects. Jason knows that each of these events is an opportunity to redefine the lost world's perception of Christians and serve the community with no strings attached. His goal is to build relationships with people that will result in them receiving Christ. Our faithful participation in the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter offering is making a difference in rapidly growing communities across America. Pray for Jason and his wife, Amy, as they share Christ's love with families in Spring Hill. Romans 15:26-27 For Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make a contribution to the poor among the saints in Jerusalem. Yes, they were pleased, and they are indebted to them. Along the BorderALLEN and REBECCA ALEXANDER live along the border of the United States and Mexico where they minister to low income migrants who settle there. With the help of our prayers and our participation in the Cooperative Program, the Alexanders go door-to-door witnessing in focus communities. When enough people become involved in a weekly community Bible study, Sunday worship services begin. Groups meet in tents, carports, and homes. One subdivision usually has many home churches. These churches may be led by bivocational pastors, or one pastor might lead several small congregations. The Alexanders began work in October, 2005, and now more than 50 different people have attended these snug worship services. Pray for the rapid multiplication of believers, Bible studies, and worshiping congregations in the borderlands. STATEMENT: Each of us needs to belong and to be accepted. Untouched by the Gospel"DAVID and PAMELA CARLTON are excited to see how God will work in the isolated area of South Africa where the Gazankulu people live. This remote people group remains virtually untouched by the gospel. However, the Lord has allowed the International Mission Board, along with national partners, to plan a way for the story of Jesus to be told among the Gazankulu. The Carltons prayerfully wait to see whom the Lord will send to be a living witness of Christ. God is using our commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program to reach out to those living in isolated areas of the world. A Personal RelationshipIn Bakersfield, California, where North American missionary JULIE SHOCKEY serves as community ministries specialist, more than 40 percent of residents are unbelievers. Many people think they are good people and know the right answers about God and Jesus, but do not have a personal relationship with Him. Churches like ours, working together through the Cooperative Program, allow Julie to spend her time assisting churches in starting new ministries including English classes, after-school programs, adult literacy programs, prison ministries, and Backyard Bible Clubs. Julie encourages churches to use these ministries as a tool to spread the gospel to those without Christ. This week, please pray for Julie and for the churches in Bakersfield, California. Under the Age of Twenty-One"In Windhoek, Nambia, 70 percent of the city's population is under the age of 21. BRYAN and DANA BULLINGTON are able to walk alongside the city's youth, leading them to faith in Christ, thanks to our love for people and our commitment to the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Each month, several students come to know Christ. God has opened doors for the Bullingtons to lead assemblies and to teach religious education classes on a weekly basis in local schools. Two main outreach groups for young people have been formed. A church also has begun. As students share hope with their families, parents are coming to the Savior. The church pays for students to attend Bible school training and has recently hired two part-time workers. Add the Bullingtons and the people of Windhoek to your prayer list this week. Traveling the Muddy Roads"WADE COKER will travel muddy roads to Kaputa, where the majority of unreached Tabwa people live in Zambia, Africa. As strategy leader for the Northern Evangelism Team, part of Wade's job is determining where new missionaries are needed the most. This leads to many trips without his wife, DEE ANN, and their children. Survey trips into new areas are necessary to learn more about the people, the environment, and the ability of missionaries to live there. God is using our commitment to The Cooperative Program to reach people living in remote villages. Please pray for survey trips like this one, that God will place people in Wade's path to give accurate, necessary information to provide good housing for the missionaries God will send to reach every tribe and tongue with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Back Home in Rochester, New York"Reared in an Italian/Sicilian Catholic family near Rochester, ANNMARIE INCORVAIA left to pursue a teaching career in North Carolina, vowing never to live up North again. However, she could not ignore God's call to mission service and began to feel a burden for the massive lostness in New York when she visited family. At Work in Columbia, South CarolinaTIM and MAGGIE RICE are North American missionaries serving in Columbia, South Carolina. First serving in Charleston, South Carolina, with seafarers, Maggie now serves as administrative assistant with Camp McCall, a Royal Ambassador camp, and with South Carolina Disaster Relief. Tim serves as mission mobilization strategist for the South Carolina Baptist Convention. Maggie's responsibilities include camp registration during the summer months and coordinating disaster relief units from August to April. She shares Christ with those she comes in contact with through meeting physical needs. Cooperative Program support from churches like ours enables Tim and Maggie to quickly respond to those in need during times of disaster. Pray for the Rices as they encourage and coordinate volunteers to share Christ with people going through adverse circumstances. MATTHEW 23:23. Working with the Circassians in TurkeyTODD and ANN (not their real names) made their home in the North Caucasus Mountain region of Central Asia a year and a half ago. The Circassians have made their home in this area for generations. Among the approximately five million Circassians who live in Caucasus, Turkey, and the Middle East, there are no known indigenous churches and only a handful of believers. Todd and Ann are working to establish relationships and connections that will allow them access to rural villages where Circassians live. Our commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program assists Todd and Ann in this effort and allows other helpers to join them. Pray that God will send more laborers into this harvest field of lost people living in Central Asia. STATEMENT: Tithing is one model for Christian giving. Tithing is disciplined, proportionate giving. But tithing alone, even giving beyond the tithe, does not make God our debtor. Proper giving and proper living go together. USC2 MissionariesJEFF and KIM KRABACH are USC2 missionaries serving in Temperance, Michigan, as church planters. Still in the early stages of starting a church, Jeff spends much of his time working with a core group of individuals developing a vision and strategy for a new church plant and building relationships in the community. Our belief in and support of the Cooperative Program help the Krabachs share the gospel in Michigan by starting a new church. Pray for Jeff and Kim to develop relationships with people in the community as they share Christ. STATEMENT: What we invest in other people is the only thing that will last forever. Our giving for foreign missions work is an investment in the world. We also make an investment in the world each week. Growth in regular giving increases our investment. Doors Opened in TurkeyOver the course of three months, DAVID and ANN JONES (not their real names) have seen three Turks baptized. Three nonbelieving sons watched as their parents went through the waters of baptism, and now one son is studying God's Word with David. David also explores the Bible with some Turks as he coleads a Bible study with national believers. During a recent trip to Turkey with a Turkish friend, David was able to leave 11 Bibles with his friend's family who had never heard the gospel. God is using our participation in the Cooperative Program to open doors for His Word to be distributed and His love to be shared in Turkey. Pray that God will open many more doors for David and Ann. Mark 10:14 In ActionMARK and LISA PATENAUDE, with their children, LUKE and ADRIAN, minister to the Northern Thai people group by helping their neighbors meet physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. The Lord brings them more than 20 children ages 4 to 15 on a daily basis. The Patenaudes have begun a worship time with these children, and although the adults are slow to respond, the Patenaudes anticipate God's work. Praise the Lord for a believing Northern Thai couple who has begun reaching out to the community. The Patenaudes also praise the Lord for our faithful support of the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, which God uses to undergird their efforts. Pray for the salvation of the Northern Thai. STATEMENT: In reflecting upon his ministry, Paul realized that when in Corinth, he had not taught and expected the Christians there to give. Because of their lack of giving, they were not growing, and there were conflicts. Giving helps Christians grow in their faith.
