Church Planting Missionaries in CanadaMissionary MomentIn the vast land mass of Canada, thousands of communities have little or no evangelical witness. GARY and SUE SMITH share God’s love with Canadians as North American church planting missionaries. Their ethnically diverse harvest field features many faces, cultures, and languages, but the Smiths see past those differences to the common need: Jesus Christ. As your church puts love in action by participating in the Cooperative Program, Gary enlists, encourages, trains, and mentors church planters who will spread out across Canada. Pray for Gary’s effectiveness as he sows together with others to start churches and for God to open doors for a bolder Gospel witness in Canada. Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men. A Love for Native AmericansMissionary MomentGod placed His love for Native American ministry deep in the heart of DANIEL GOOMBI. Daniel, who was reared in Nebraska as a missionary kid on a Native American reservation, and his wife, KIMBERLY, now serve together as North American missionaries in Kansas. They are sharing the Good News of Jesus with tribe members living on the reservation through community ministries, outreach ministries, Vacation Bible Schools, and personal evangelism, thanks to your commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program. Daniel and Kimberly covet your prayers this week that their ministry will grow and bear much fruit. STATEMENT: Responsible stewardship includes making a Christian will. Giving now is important, but so is giving for Christian ministry, through a will, until the Lord’s return. What a joy to know that through a will, our ministry for Christ can continue after death. University of AlaskaMissionary MomentWith only 300,000 people living in and around Anchorage, it is easy to see how Alaska is often perceived as cold and desolate. North American collegiate missionary BRENDA CRIM embraces the task of taking the Gospel to areas that are void of any witness. In fact, 130 villages have no church. With the help of churches like yours working through the Cooperative Program, Brenda is able to witness and mentor Native Alaskan college students at the University of Alaska, sharing Christ and encouraging them to return home and help start new churches in their villages. Please add Brenda and the students she engages with the Gospel to your prayer list this week. Romans 5:8 But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us! Leaving all to FollowMissionary MomentMIKE and HEATHER McAFEE are urban church planters in Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa. Due to deep Islamic and Catholic roots, pockets of the city remain largely untouched by Christ’s Gospel. Recently the McAfees left a job and home in the States and set their feet on African soil, where they are learning two languages so they will be equipped to share the Gospel with the people in Abidjan. They are sharing Christ in these untouched areas of the city, thanks to your commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Pray for Mike and Heather as they learn a new language. Ask God to bring people across their paths who need to hear the Gospel. STATEMENT: Our giving should be understood in light of God’s giving to us. God’s purpose for giving—to bring people to Himself—can be our purpose for giving also. Serving in Ouagadougou, Burkina FasoMissionary MomentDAVID and LAUREL FORT work as member care providers in West Africa, thanks in part to your mission gifts through the Cooperative Program. They travel frequently from their home in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, responding to needs for counsel and encouragement. As a medical doctor, David frequently responds to health questions. On a recent trip, the Forts visited two journeymen who live in a house with minimal furnishings in a somewhat remote village. During their time together, they shared a meal with a family for whom these journeymen are crafting an oral Bible story from the Old Testament. Their host is an African believer who is helping to ensure the accuracy and cultural appropriateness of the translation. Pray for the Forts as they minister across West Africa and for those who will hear this Bible story. Deuteronomy 14:22 Each year you are to set aside a tenth of all the produce grown in your fields. Spreading Gospel SeedsMissionary MomentMore than one million Koreans live in California, but 80 percent do not have a personal relationship with Christ. As church planting strategists and North American missionaries, SONG and FANNY KIM are working among Koreans, spreading Gospel seeds and helping plant new churches. While assisting Korean church planters and teaching at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, Song helps pastors and leaders see beyond their churches into the fields where the work of spreading the Gospel is vital. Your love for people and commitment to putting love in action through the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering are having an eternal impact in the lives of Koreans along the West Coast. This week, please take a moment to pray for Song and Fanny and the people they serve. STATEMENT: Giving has always been an expectation of God for His people. Christian giving, however, is for a larger purpose than when the Israelites gave a tithe. They gave out of duty; we give to reach the lost for Christ. Philadelphia, A Great American CityMissionary MomentPhiladelphia is known as the third most religious city in America. Every day LAMAR and DOLLY DUKE pray for this place where less than five percent of its residents claim to be evangelical Christians. It is easy to see why this metropolitan area is a huge field waiting for the Gospel to be sown. As associational missionary in southwestern Pennsylvania, Lamar helps start new churches and strengthens and empowers existing ones to be more effective in sharing the Gospel. Twenty-seven congregations have been planted in the past few years with the help of Cooperative Program gifts from churches like yours. Lamar and Dolly would appreciate your prayers this week for their ministry and for the people living in this great American city. 2 Corinthians 8:7 Now as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us—excel also in this grace. Lord Help Me!Missionary MomentDEREK DALTON* has a strategy for leading volunteers in the Pacific Rim: Ask the Lord to help them meet a person and share the Gospel. On this excursion, Derek and his group met Norman, a homeless man. After one of the volunteers shared his testimony, a Gospel tract was explained, and Norman accepted Jesus. Derek was certain this was God’s prepared person. After all, Norman spent an hour with people he’d never met and never asked them for money. While Derek had his doubts about Norman’s showing up the next day and his ability to read, Norman did both, reading the Gospel of Luke and two tracts! God is using your commitment to the Cooperative Program to share the Gospel with those whose hearts He’s prepared. Pray for Norman and for opportunities to share. *Name changed for security reasons Statement: The Corinthians apparently wanted to excel in Christian living, but they had fallen short in the grace of giving. Paul challenged them to grow by including generous giving. Giving helps us grow in Christlikeness. God Uses BusinessmenMissionary MomentThroughout history, God has used businessmen and traders to spread the Gospel in many of the countries of The Last Frontier. RICH and CHRISTY COLE* are using business strategies to engage some of the most affluent, influential, and untouchable peoples in the world. They are building relationships with people already involved in affinity groups to begin a church planting movement. Cooperative Program support from churches like yours allows the Coles to live in places that facilitate their entry into the lives of these peoples. They trust that God will continue to use business strategists to spark a movement among Muslims. Pray for God to open doors and hearts as the Coles serve the Lord, and you, in The Last Frontier. *Names changed for security reasons. Preparing for Ministry in JapanMissionary MomentAs teams prepare for ministry in Japan, BUDDY and MELANIE BRENTS help them plan their schedules and ensure follow-up on any contacts they make. One key ministry is “5-Minute English.” Volunteers stand at busy train stations and hold large signs advertising free five-minute English conversations. Many Japanese stop because they are eager to practice their English. The book that the volunteers use asks participants a series of questions that leads to spiritual discussions. These discussions often lead to second meetings, and many Japanese have come to know Jesus through them. Thanks to your consistent and generous support through the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, the people of Japan are hearing and responding to God’s invitation of Eternal Life through faith in Christ. Add the Brents to your prayer list this week. John 8:29 The One who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him. Strategy Coordinators in Taichung CityMissionary MomentTOM and EVELYN WARD* are strategy coordinators whose focus is on developing a comprehensive church-multiplication strategy for the 2.5 million people in Taiwan’s Taichung City. Taiwan is home to 11 million scooters/motorcycles and 23 million working-class people. Taichung City has 15 small Baptist churches. Most Taiwanese practice a blend of Buddhism, Taoism, and homage to other idols, including ancestor worship and worship at temples honoring people they consider as heroes. The Wardses’ team is newly formed, and they are excited to be a part of what God will do there. Sharing the Gospel in AsiaMissionary MomentJOHN and MARY CALLAHAN* share the Gospel in Asia with business owners, shopkeepers, CEOs, professionals, and young mothers. Shopkeepers have started shop churches in their restaurants, beauty salons, and bike repair shops. One shopkeeper used to count the money she made at the end of each day; now she counts the opportunities to share God with her customers. The Callahans have also led marriage training for newlywed couples. Upon hearing that God is the glue that keeps a marriage strong, three of the participants decided they needed to be baptized. Last year John participated in church planting training, and more than 100 people received Christ, and 20 groups have been started. Never take for granted how God is using your faithful support of the Cooperative Program to impact the world. Opening the DoorMissionary MomentDAVID and ANNE LEE* work in a city of 1.4 million in Asia. Last year they prayed with 50 people to receive Jesus. Those they trained have led over 100 people to Christ. Through word of mouth, DVD, Bible or tract, the Gospel was shared with over 700 people. One day while waiting for her food to cook, Anne shared her testimony with the woman cutting the vegetables. As Anne began to pray, she felt the woman’s eyes staring at her. Gateway To The WestMissionary MomentJust as the St. Louis Arch represents the gateway to the West, North American missionaries BEN and LINDA HESS use new church plants as the gateway to the multitudes of people living without Christ in Missouri. Building on knowledge gained as an International Mission Board missionary in Kenya, Ben uses his prior experiences for developing contextualized church planting training and models in Missouri. There are great needs in and around St. Louis, but the greatest need is for people to be transformed through a personal relationship with Christ. Ben and Linda need your prayers and your faithful support through the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. Thank you for including them in your prayers this week. Cooperative Program At Work In AsiaMissionary MomentBRUCE and SUSAN CRIDER* are reaching the “A” people group in Asia, especially through their university work, thanks in part to your continued participation through the Cooperative Program. Their house church is beginning to grow. It has been rewarding for the Criders to see God at work as they have reached out to flood victims who have lost their homes and their possessions. They were able to provide relief and share the Gospel, resulting in more than 600 people responding to the Gospel! Also, a medical team was able to show God’s love by providing simple health care, while others met their spiritual needs. Get ChangedMissionary MomentThis is HOLDEN and LEANNE OHLER’s * second time to serve in South Asia. During their first tour, they saw one person accept Jesus in 30 months. Upon their return, they began using discussions of the Quran as a bridge to sharing the Bible. During their first week back, one person accepted Jesus! A year later, they saw nine people “get changed” in one month (a term the Ohlers’ national partners use synonymously with “getting saved.”) Currently, the Ohlers are training three national men as evangelists and church planters. Your commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program is seeding the hearts of those seeking truth in South Asia. Impacting Lives in BangladeshMissionary MomentOWEN and MILLA STODDARD* share the Gospel in Bangladesh. The Bay of Bengal and rivers surround their area, isolating the people they are trying to reach. Undaunted, the Stoddards bought two boats and, with two teams of men, they are distributing Gospel materials to the villages. Thousands of pieces of literature have been distributed, and in one village, a crowd of 1,000 people watched the JESUS Film. Several years ago, Owen and Milla led their electrician to the Lord because he asked them for a Bible. They began praying for his family, and after a while, his wife believed. Metro Baptist AssociationMissionary MomentAs a pastor, JOHN SHAULL emphasized missions and encouraged church members to be engaged in missions work. Today, John serves as director of missions for Metro Baptist Association and associational missions team leader for the Baptist Convention of Iowa. With only 100 Southern Baptist churches in the entire state, John is faced with the challenge of helping others catch a vision for starting new churches among different people groups. Our commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering enables John to assist pastors, leaders, and churches in sharing Christ in their communities. Pray for John and SHARON Shaull as they serve in Iowa. 2 Corinthians 8:9-11 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ: although He was rich, for your sake He became poor, so that by His poverty you might become rich. Now I am giving an opinion on this because it is profitable for you, who a year ago began not only to do something but also to desire it. To Win Muslims for ChristMissionary MomentSTAN and GEORGIA BAXLEY* do everything from helping new folks get settled into their homes to handling emergency needs. To win Muslims for Christ, Stan and others are developing new types of outreach, thanks in part to your participation through the Cooperative Program. Another ministry involves the opening of a local business that allows five families to hold a valid visa and reach their customers for Christ. The Baxleys’ girls are homeschooled, and their afternoon playtime allows them to share their beliefs with their friends. Dinners and holiday gatherings also allow this family to share their beliefs and further teach their neighbors and friends. The Baxleys travel to many unreached, unengaged areas and train national believers so established churches can flourish and new ones can be planted. The Baxleys would appreciate your prayers this week. *Names changed for security reasonsThe preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention.
