Morehead Fall Football Camp Kicks Into Gear Eagles Tabbed Sixth in Preseason PFL Poll Morehead State press release Zach Lewis
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State football team opened camp this week, and the Eagles were picked to finish sixth in the Pioneer Football League, as voted on by the conference’s head coaches and announced by the league office Monday morning. The Eagles look to build on a solid finish to the 2010 season. MSU won back-to-back contests against conference opponents Valparaiso and Campbell. Last year, MSU was tabbed for a ninth place result in the preseason PFL poll, but the Eagles finished 4-4 in the league for a fifth place final showing. With 16 starters set to return to the gridiron in 2011, the Eagles look to leadership and experience to carry them throughout the 2011 season. Offensively, junior quarterback Zach Lewis looks to lead the Eagles after finishing second among league signal-callers in passing yardage with 263.5 yards per game. On the other side of the ball, the defense looks to senior linebacker Tony Bachman to be the anchor. Bachman ranked second in the league in tackles. Senior defensive ends Mark Hall and Jerome Raymond will anchor a strong line this year. That pair combined for 36 tackles for loss in 2010. In addition to the offense and defense, the Eagles return their coveted kicker Rainer Duzan, who is coming off a breakout season in which he was named First-team All-PFL. Jacksonville took the top seed in the poll, receiving eight out of the 10 first place votes, followed by Dayton and Drake both receiving one first place vote. San Diego came in at a close forth, with Butler sealing the number five spot. MSU, Campbell, Marist, Davidson and Valparaiso wrapped up the preseason rankings. Morehead State opens the season at home against Kentucky Christian on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.

Desmond Cox Primed for Excellent Senior Season Morehead State University Athletics press release
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- He may not be the biggest guy on the field and in fact, he might just be one of the smallest in stature. That doesn't mean Morehead State senior running back Desmond Cox isn't "big" when it comes to his playmaking abilities. Entering his senior season as a co-captain, Cox - a 5-8 fullback from Akron, Ohio - is the leading returning rusher for MSU, turning in 448 yards and a pair of touchdowns in 2010. He also caught 19 passes from quarterback Zach Lewis for 275 yards and found the endzone three times in the aerial game. On special teams, Cox averaged 17 yards per kickoff return as well. He says he is always prepared for anything the defense might throw at him when he comes to the line of scrimmage. "Really what we are taught to do is identify the front and check out the techniques, whether it is a run or a pass. We also check out the linebackers and safeties. You have to look at what adjustments you might need to make because football is a fast-paced game." And it will get even faster for the Eagle offense this year. MSU has been working this Fall camp on installing a new offensive system that fans will notice differences in. Most notably, it will be a faster-paced system that will hopefullly allow MSU the opportunity to reach the end zone more. "As the offense, we feel it's our turn to put up some points. Not to say the offense hasn't been doing that, but the defense has always been doing a tremendous job. Now we have to do our job and this is the year to do it. We have a new system in, and it's a great system. We are just anxious for September 1st." But, for that system to succeed, the Eagles are going to rely on their senior leaders to instill a sense of pride on the team. Cox says he will definitely work hard to be that team leader the coaching staff wants him to be. "It's an honor to be selected as a co-captain. Really leadership is doing things the right way, even when nobody else is looking," he said. "It's just doing what you need to do to be successful. If you do that, then other guys will be successful also." One thing Cox is adament about is his will to win. He'll sacrifice his own stat totals to make sure the Eagles win. "Any player I think wants to be successful and put up good numbers, but in order to do that, you have to win. It takes everybody to win." With Cox, the Eagles have a leader in the backfield and a legitimate return threat, plus solid experience and talent among the rest of the offense and defense, fans should expect good results in 2011. The Eagles continue two-a-day practices this week. They will have a "live" game-atmosphere intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday, Aug. 25 before the official 2011 season opener at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1 against Kentucky Christian.

Lewis named as one of Six Team Captains Morehead State Press Release
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State football program has named six student-athletes as team captains for the 2011 season. Senior fullback Desmond Cox, senior halfback Ronnie McDermott and junior quarterback Zach Lewis have been tabbed as the offensive captain. On defense, senior linebacker Tony Bachman and senior defensive ends Jerome Raymond and Mark Hall are the captains. Each week, along with the team captains, the coaching staff will designate one game captain. "We normally only name four players as captains, but we just felt like all these guys deserved the honor this year," said coach Matt Ballard. "To be honest, it was extremely hard just to narrow it down to six. That just shows that we have so many leaders on this team this year." Cox is the leading returning rusher for the Eagles on offense, while McDermott returns for his senior year having led the Eagles in receptions in 2010. Lewis set several records as MSU's signal caller in his sophomore season and is projected to be one of the top quarterbacks in the Pioneer Football League. Bachman led the team in total tackles in 2010 while ranking second in the PFL. Hall and Raymond combined to form one of the league's best defensive end tandems. The duo combined for 36 tackles for loss and helped the Eagles' defensive unit rank among the nation's best.

Football Eagles Kick Off 2011 Campaign Morehead State press release
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State opens its 2011 football campaign with a Thursday night contest against NAIA foe Kentucky Christian at Jayne Stadium at 7 p.m. From just down interstate 64 in Grayson, KCU is in its third season of intercollegiate football. The Knights are under the direction of former NFL wide receiver and first-year collegiate head coach Mike Furrey. The Eagles are under the leadership of the dean of Pioneer Football League coaches, Matt Ballard. Entering his 18th year at the helm, Ballard ranks second among all current PFL coaches with 95 wins at MSU. Morehead State closed out the 2010 campaign last November with a double overtime victory in Jayne Stadium against Campbell, lifting the Eagles’ final marks to 5-6 overall and 4-4 in the PFL. With 16 starters back in the mix, MSU is primed for even better results in 2011. On offense, junior quarterback Zach Lewis will run a new-look offensive system, getting the primary signals from new offensive coordinator Rob Tenyer. Lewis returns as one of the league’s top passers, ranking second in the league last year in passing yardage (2,898) while tossing 15 touchdowns. Among his weapons of choice in the aerial game, the Eagles return nine of their top 10 pass catchers, including leading receiver Ronnie McDermott. Also back are juniors Jaison Yoshimura and Donte Sawyer, who combined for 65 catches and more than 600 yards. Defensively, the Eagles are solid on the line and in the middle of the field at linebacker. Senior defensive ends Jerome Raymond and Mark Hall combined for 36 tackles for loss last year and look to do more damage to opponents’ rushing games this year. Senior middle linebacker Tony Bachman set the MSU single season record for tackles in 2010. Kentucky Christian enters the game fresh off a 20-6 victory at Southern Virginia last Saturday, giving Furrey a win in his debut. Deonte Merricks rushed for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Last year, the Knights finished their first full year in the Mid South Conference at 0-11. Next week, the Eagles travel to Illinois State to face the Missouri Valley Conference’s Redbirds in Normal, Ill., at 7:30 p.m. EST.

Lewis throws for 385 yards in Morehead win
MOREHEAD, Ky. – School and Pioneer Football League records fell by the wayside Thursday night at Jayne Stadium as the Morehead State football team opened the 2011 season by rolling up 753 yards of total offense, including 474 passing yards, in shutting out visiting Kentucky Christian 67-0. The defensive effort marked the first shutout for the Eagles since a 33-0 blanking of Drake in 2007, and the offense generated the most points since a 73-point outburst against Austin Peay in 2000. Junior kicker Rainer Duzan also set the MSU career record for field goals by making good on all four of his attempts, including a career-long 48-yard boot through the uprights in the second quarter that set the halftime score at 41-0. Duzan’s 19 points kicking also established the MSU and PFL record for points kicking in a game. Along with the passing totals, seven Eagle rushers combined to generate 279 yards on the ground. The 753 total yards shattered the former MSU mark of 728 yards set against Valpo in 1997 and also eclipsed the former PFL mark of 734 yards set by Drake in 2000. Junior quarterback Zach Lewis threw for 385 yards (27-of-46) and four touchdowns – his fourth career four-touchdown game – while redshirt freshman Boone Goldsmith came on late to toss a pair of touchdowns on 5-of-7 passing for 89 yards. The Eagle signal callers spread the aerial game among 13 receivers with junior Jaison Yoshimura leading the way with 74 yards on three connections, including a 65-yard bomb he nearly took in for another score. Redshirt freshman Rees Macshara tallied a team high 133 all-purpose yards, rushing for 73 on just nine carries, while junior Greg Lewis topped the Eagle runners with 83 yards and a touchdown via 11 totes. Senior Desmond Cox also found the end zone once and rushed for 65 yards while generating 36 yards receiving. Yoshimura, junior Donte Sawyer, senior Andre Williams, sophomore Brandon Bornhauser, freshman Desi Banks and senior Ronnie McDermott each had receiving touchdowns as well. Besides pitching the shutout, the Eagle defense notched seven tackles for loss, three sacks and an interception. Senior Tony Bachman and redshirt freshmen Nick McCune and Brian Nelson led the way with seven stops each. Senior defensive end Jerome Raymond continued his streak of games with a tackle for loss as he stretched that to 13 with 2.5 sacks for 16 yards in losses. Raymond also forced a fumble. Freshman Zach Senvisky recorded his first career interception when he picked off KCU quarterback Graham Johnston on the Knights’ first offensive possession. MSU’s defense held the Knights to just 40 total offensive yards, including only 10 yards on the ground. Johnston was 6-of-17 for 30 yards through the air. After running for more than 180 yards in their season opener, Knights’ tailback Deonte Merricks was held to just a team-best 22 by MSU. The Eagles closed the first quarter with a 24-0 lead as McDermott caught a 25-yard scoring strike from Lewis and Cox reached paydirt on a three-yard run following Duzan’s first field goal from 19 yards. Sawyer also hauled in a 39-yard touchdown pass from Lewis. Yoshimura snagged a five-yard score from Lewis, and Williams was on the receiving end of Lewis’ fourth touchdown to make it 38-0 with 1:36 left before halftime. Duzan booted his career-long 48-yard field goal with 41 seconds left in the first half. The Eagles’ kicker added two more field goals, from 26 and 33 yards, to make it 47-0 in the third quarter, and Greg Lewis rambled into the end zone from a yard out on a fourth down play to push the lead to 54-0 in the third. Goldsmith connected with Bornhauser on a 28-yard pitch and catch to set the margin at 61-0, and Banks finished the scoring flurry by fingering a nine-yard toss from Goldsmith with 2:19 left in the game. MSU averaged 7.9 yard per play in the contest and Duzan punted just twice but averaged 39.5 yards. The Eagles forced two KCU punters to combine for 12 boots on the night. Morehead State now looks ahead to next Saturday, Sept. 10 when the Eagles travel to Normal, Ill., to face the Missouri Valley’s Illinois State Redbirds. Kickoff in Hancock Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST.

Football Eagles Set to Tangle With Illinois State Saturday Night
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State’s football team will look to continue its season-opening firepower on Saturday night when the Eagles travel to face the Illinois State Redbirds at Hancock Stadium at 7:30 p.m. EST. Fans can catch the broadcast of the game on the Eagle Sports Network with WIVY-FM 96.3 serving once again as the flagship station. The game will also be available on www.msueagles.comThe Eagles are coming off one of the most lopsided wins in school history as they defeated visiting Kentucky Christian 67-0 on Sept. 1 in the season opener. MSU set numerous school and Pioneer Football League records, including rolling up 753 yards in total offense to establish the MSU and PFL single-game records. MSU’s 474 passing yards, including 385 yards from junior signal caller Zach Lewis, also set the MSU and PFL single game records. On special teams, it was a special night for junior kicker Rainer Duzan, who was named the PFL Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday. He made all four of his field goals to tie the MSU single game record, and his career-long 48-yarder in the second quarter, gave him a school career record 20 field goals. He went on to add two more FGs and kicked seven extra points to set the MSU and PFL standard for points kicking in a game. The Eagle defense, led by PFL Player of the Week Jerome Raymond, limited KCU into just 40 yards of offense. Raymond had 2.5 tackles for loss, both sacks, to push his streak of consecutive games with a TFL to 13. Morehead State will be facing a Redbird team that absorbed a season-opening loss at Eastern Illinois, 36-26. In that game, quarterback Matt Brown threw for 243 yards on 23-of-35 totals. Ashton Leggett rushed for a team high 97 yards and scored two touchdowns. Three ISU defenders, led by Josh Howe’s 11, had double digit tackles. Shelby Harris had 1.5 tackles for loss and forced an EIU safety. The Eagles and Redbirds are not familiar opponents. In fact, you have to go all the way back to 1972 to find the last meeting between the schools on the gridiron. The teams have only ever played twice, in 1971 and 1972, with MSU winning at ISU in 1971 and ISU returning the favor with a shutout at Jayne Stadium in Morehead in 1972. Following Saturday’s game, MSU will return to Morehead to prepare for another road contest next weekend. The Eagles will travel to Loretto, Pa., to face longtime non-conference rival St. Francis. Kickoff on Sept. 17 is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST.

Eagle Football Stopped by Redbirds
NORMAL, Ill. -- The Morehead State football team was unable to carry the momentum of its home-opening victory as Illinois State, led by a swarming defense, opened its 2011 home schedule with a 52-21 victory over MSU Saturday night at Hancock Stadium. MSU began the game firing on all cylinders defensively. Defensive end Jerome Raymond scooped up a fumble by Redbird quarterback Matt Brown on the first drive of the game. Sophomore defensive tackle Aaron Meadows caused the miscue as Brown scrambled after a broken play. Eagle quarterback Zach Lewis was harassed early and often by the ISU defense. The Eagles were unable to turn the Raymond fumble recovery into an early score and did not generate a first down until their third drive. ISU also demonstrated the ability to create the big play offensively. Brown connected with receiver Marvon Sanders as he raced down the sideline with 8:32 left in the first for a 73-yard touchdown which gave the Redbirds a 7-0 lead. The Redbird defense created the second scoring opportunity of the game following a jarring hit to Donte Sawyer which forced a fumble that was taken into the end zone by junior defensive end Nate Palmer. Palmer was a consistent force for the ISU defense and their constant presence in the Eagle backfield, though he finished the game with just one sack and a fumble recovery. “We faced a very solid and outstanding football team in Illinois State,” said football coach Matt Ballard. “I thought the difference in the football game was they won the battle up front on both sides of the football. When you are able to do that good things tend to happen for them.” With ISU leading 14-0, the Eagles took the field looking to generate some offense and once again ran into a wave of red. Lewis was victimized by the Redbird defense and they forced a fumble that gave them excellent field position at the MSU 12. Brown immediately turned the Eagle fumble into a Redbird score tossing a 10-yard pass to receiver Tyrone Walker in the back of the endzone. The Eagle offense continued to sputter into the second quarter, even adding the wrinkle of a wildcat formation to aid an ailing running game. “We had a very difficult time (on the offensive side of the ball) handling the pressure up front,” said Ballard. “Early on I felt we had some opportunities but we were not able to execute and we had two miscues to give them some easy scores.” In the second half the teams traded touchdowns and the sluggish Eagle offense scored 21 points. Despite the lack of offense on the ground, Desmond Cox reached the end zone in the third quarter putting the Eagles on the board for the first time as he rumbled in for a 1-yard touchdown scamper. Brown and Walker connected again with 7:26 left in the third quarter to extend the Redbird lead. A 64-yard touchdown toss to a racing Walker gave ISU a 38-7 lead. Brown finished the game with 286 passing yards and five touchdowns. The Eagles scored two more touchdowns, one at the end of the third quarter and one in the fourth. Both touchdowns were products of the sure-handed receiver Kevin Thomas who grabbed a 4-yard pass at the end of the third quarter and nabbed a 19-yard score in the middle of the fourth. Zach Lewis finished the contest with 371 passing yards going 35-of-53 passing with two touchdowns and one interception for the Eagles. He was also sacked eight times. Ronnie McDermott led the team in receiving yards with 96. The Eagles face St. Francis next Saturday in Loretto, Pa., as they continue their road swing beginning at 1 p.m. ET.

MSU has still won five of the seven all-time meetings between the two schools. Harbridge rushed for 174 yards on 13 carries before halftime and another 172 yards on 17 attempts after the break. He also caught four passes for 52 yards en route to 398 total yards in the win, and scored a total of five times. Morehead State held a 49-28 advantage midway through the third quarter before Saint Francis went on a scoring spree and forced multiple turnovers. Kicker Josh Thiel capped a 43-yard drive with a 36-yard field goal to make it 49-31 with 4:57 remaining in the third. Harbridge then danced to the end zone three times in the final period – on runs of 83, four and 10 yards. The scoring drives ranged from one play to seven plays. After scoring 49 points in the game’s first 37 minutes, MSU failed to score over the contest’s final 23. SFU’s rally offset another record-setting day for the Morehead State offense. The Eagles, who lead the PFL in total offense and passing yards per game, set school and league records with 512 yards through the air. Junior quarterback Zach Lewis, who suffered an injury in the second quarter, went 12-of-18 for 318 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
