2012 Football Schedule Highlighted by Six Home Games
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State football program will play six home games and five road contests in 2012. The Eagles will face three non-conference opponents, including Eastern Kentucky, and eight Pioneer Football League foes, including defending co-champions Drake and San Diego. “We’ve been working extremely hard this off-season and we’re excited about the 2012 campaign,” said Matt Ballard, who enters his 19th season as the head coach at Morehead State. “It will be nice to have six home games overall and two out of our first three at Jayne Stadium.” Morehead State opens the season on Aug. 30 when it hosts Southern Virginia. The Eagles then travel to Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 8 before wrapping up the non-conference slate at home against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sept. 15. “We’ve had past success with Southern Virginia, so we’re looking forward to the opener,” Ballard said. “Saint Francis could be the most exciting and competitive game on our schedule. We had a 50-49 shootout at their place last year. It was certainly a whacky and crazy game.” MSU owns a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series against SVU and 5-2 upper hand vs. SFU. The Eagles and Colonels, who squared off regularly when Morehead State played football in the OVC and do battle in virtually every other sport, will be meeting for the 68th time in football. “We’re also excited about the game at Eastern Kentucky,” Ballard said. “I think it will be terrific for football fans in the state, in addition to our students and alumni. Eastern Kentucky is a fully-funded scholarship program, but we will get better by playing a tough schedule.” Morehead State will host Jacksonville (Oct. 6), Campbell (Oct. 27), Davidson (Nov. 3) and Valparaiso (Nov. 17) in league play, while the Eagles will travel to Drake (Sept. 22), Dayton (Oct. 13), Butler (Oct. 20) and San Diego (Nov. 10) in conference action. “There are a lot of good football teams in the PFL and each game is a challenge,” Ballard said. “Drake, Dayton and San Diego all finished in the top half of our conference last season, so we’ll definitely have our work cut out for us on the road this year.” Morehead State will play 11 contests in 12 weeks, beginning Aug. 30 and ending Nov. 17. The Eagles will enjoy their only open date on Sept. 29. Times and promotions for all 2012 football games will be announced at a later date. “The PFL is the most unique conference in the nation for any sport,” Ballard added. “The geography of our league literally covers the entire country – from San Diego (Calif.) to Jacksonville (Fla.) to Marist (N.Y.). There are 10 really solid football programs in the conference right now, and we’re looking forward to the addition of Mercer and Stetson in 2013.” Morehead State finished last season 3-8 overall and 2-6 in the PFL. Half of MSU’s eight defeats came in heartbreaking fashion, by less than five points. Morehead State led all Football Championship Subdivision schools in first downs (25.2), while ranking second in total yards (478.9) and passing yards (358.2). The Eagles also placed sixth in the nation with 36.1 points per outing. Individually, junior quarterback Zach Lewis ranked fifth nationally in passing yards (325.9) and seventh in total yards (313.5), while junior wide receiver Donte Sawyer placed 15th in all-purpose yards (146.2) and 28th in receiving yards (82.2). The Eagles set 17 school records a year ago – eight team and nine individual. The list was highlighted by Lewis, who set single-season marks for completions (324), attempts (315) and passing yards (3,585).

Eagles Ready For Spring Football Practice Morehead State University Press Release
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State football team opens its spring practice schedule on Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET. The Eagles are scheduled to have 14 workouts between April 3 and 27. MSU will practice on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Sundays and Wednesdays are designated as make-up days, if needed. Workouts are open to the public and free of charge. “Football players and coaches will tell you the winters are too long,” said Matt Ballard, who begins his 19th season as head coach at Morehead State. “We are really excited about getting back on the football field and everything we’ll be able to accomplish during the month of April. “Our guys have been working extremely hard with their conditioning. Team improvement happens when each individual is dedicated to making himself better -- and that’s what we’re seeing. I really think we’re primed to have an outstanding spring season.” Morehead State’s annual Spring Game is set for Sunday, April 29, at Jayne Stadium. Chuck Mraz and Jason Blanton from the Eagle Sports Network will broadcast the affair on WIVY-96.3 FM (MSU athletics' flagship station) and it can also be heard on MSPR-90.3 FM. “Our No. 1 goal is getting through the spring without any significant injuries,” Ballard said. “We need to get a lot out of this month, but we need everyone to be healthy heading into the summer.” Morehead State returns five individuals who earned Pioneer Football League postseason honors a year ago -- wide receiver Donte Sawyer, kicker/punter Rainer Duzan, quarterback Zach Lewis and offensive linemen Joey Clegg and Eric Matteson. The Eagles finished last season 3-8 overall and 2-6 in the PFL, but half of their defeats came by less than five points. MSU led all 2011 Football Championship Subdivision schools in first downs (25.2 per game), while ranking second in total yards (478.9) and passing yards (358.2). The Eagles also placed sixth in the nation with 36.1 points per outing. Individually, Lewis ranked fifth nationally in passing yards (325.9) and seventh in total yards (313.5), while Sawyer placed 15th in all-purpose yards (146.2) and 28th in receiving yards (82.2). The 2011 Eagles set 17 school records -- eight team and nine individual. Lewis led the way by establishing single-season marks for completions (324), attempts (315) and passing yards (3,585). “Spring practice is all about defining roles for the players in the program,” Ballard added. “We graduated starters on both sides of the ball, so we’re going to need some of the younger guys to step up in those spots. Going from a role player to a significant contributor is usually a pretty big leap, but that’s what we’ll be looking for in some cases.” Ballard’s assistant coaches heading into the 2012 campaign are John Gilliam, Rob Tenyer, Chris Garner, Paul Humphries, Thomas Duffy, Matt McCutchan, Mike Simmons and Brett Rude. Morehead State opens its 2012 regular-season schedule on Thursday, Aug. 30, at home against Southern Virginia. Game times for the upcoming campaign will be announced at a later date.

Morehead State Ready for Annual Spring Football Game Morehead State University Press Release
The annual Morehead State spring football game is scheduled for Sunday at 4:30 p.m. ET. The event will take place at Jayne Stadium and admission is free. “I want to personally invite all Eagle fans out to Sunday’s spring football game,” Morehead State Head Coach Matt Ballard said. “We’re looking forward to a fun day and competitive contest.” The football exhibition will follow a regular-season baseball game between Morehead State and Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Kentucky. First pitch at Allen Field is set for 1 p.m. MSU’s baseball and football stadiums are located next to each other on the east end of campus. Morehead State’s spring football season has included four workouts each week in April. All returning players have been on the practice field, regardless of position or spot on the depth chart. “We’ve had an outstanding spring season,” Ballard said. “I’ve been very pleased with the way our guys have worked and competed. It’s been a fast pace with a lot of good tempo. We’ve made progress in all three phases of the game -- offense, defense and special teams.” The spring game will be carried by WIVY-96.3 FM, MSPR-90.3 FM and MSUEagles.com for the first time in school history. Chuck Mraz, Jason Blanton, Tanner Hesterberg and Mike Williams will have radio play-by-play, sideline reports and several interviews beginning at 4:15 p.m. “Sunday will serve as a great preview to what everyone can expect in the fall,” Ballard added. “We will have a lot of talented guys on the field. We will also be using a unique scoring system, which is different from regular-season games. I think that will be enjoyable for the fans.” The scoring system, to which Ballard refers, will give points to both the offense and defense. The offense will wear white and the defense will wear blue. In addition to traditional points, the offense will be credited with two points for multiple first downs on a drive, one for third- and fourth-down conversions, one for completions of at least 30 yards and one for rushes of at least 20 yards. The defense, meanwhile, will be credited with four points for a takeaway, three for forcing a three-and-out, two for stopping a drive without allowing a score, two for a sack, two for a stop in third- and fourth-down situations, one for allowing no yardage on a rushing play and one for a pass break up. Morehead State returns five individuals who earned Pioneer Football League postseason honors a year ago -- wide receiver Donte Sawyer, kicker/punter Rainer Duzan, quarterback Zach Lewis and offensive linemen Joey Clegg and Eric Matteson. Football Wraps Up Spring Ball With Spirited Blue-White Game Morehead State University Press Release
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State football wrapped up its month-long spring practices Sunday with the annual Blue-White game at Jayne Stadium. In a spirited two-hour contest, the Eagle offense overcame a 14-point halftime deficit to rally and defeat the defensive unit, 61-42. The contest featured a unique scoring system that awarded points for several situations, including big plays, touchdowns and multiple first downs on offense, and sacks, interceptions, tackles for loss and stopping drives on defense. “I really liked our effort and the way our offense played in the second half,” said MSU Head Coach Matt Ballard. “Our defense was so physical and aggressive and created some turnovers, but that’s why we have the scoring system we do. It awards points for making plays and showing great effort and not just scoring touchdowns.” The Eagle defense surged to a 35-21 halftime advantage thanks to three interceptions and several pass breakups and drive-killing stops. Sophomore defenders Michael Jackson and Chris Benton and redshirt sophomore Nick McCune all came up with picks in the first half. The offense opened the second half with a 95-yard scoring drive, capped by a 13-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Zach Lewis to senior wide receiver Donte Sawyer, one of two scoring tosses caught by Sawyer on the day. Lewis, MSU’s record-setting signal-caller, passed for 250 yards on 20 completions. Sawyer grabbed a team-best five passes for more than 50 yards. “Football is a game of adversity,” Ballard said. “We talked to our offense at halftime when they were down by 14. We told them you have to be sound, sharp and just make plays. They came out and took the first drive and moved 95 yards and set the tone for the second half.” The Eagle offense also received a pair of touchdowns from senior wideout Kevin Thomas and redshirt freshman Justin Cornwall. Thomas caught a 49-yard score from redshirt freshman quarterback Michael Mann and also threw a touchdown to junior wideout Jason Rider. Cornwall snagged a 24-yard scoring toss from redshirt sophomore quarterback Boone Goldsmith and also rushed for a 25-yard touchdown. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Shade Whitfield caught a scoring pass as well. “Every live situation this spring, we have gotten at least two first downs on a drive,” Ballard noted. “That’s exactly what you saw after halftime and we had a completely different ball game.” Senior kicker Rainer Duzan booted a pair of field goals, one from 21 yards and the other from 25 yards out. Senior running back Greg Lewis and sophomore halfback Rob Hardin each piled up more than 40 yards. Senior Blake Stanley ripped off a 46-yard run, and redshirt sophomore Brandon Bornhauser recorded the longest run, a 50-yard tote to set up one of Sawyer’s touchdowns. “People on both sides of the ball made big plays,” Ballard said. “Our defense is young and we had some injuries today we have to deal with, but I am excited as we head into fall. This was a valuable experience today, and I think our team has done a nice job of learning and growing this spring.” MSU went through 14 practice sessions in the month, beginning April 3 and wrapping with Sunday’s game. The Eagles’ 11-game 2012 schedule features six home contests. The season opener is set for Thursday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. ET when Southern Virginia visits. Family weekend is Sept. 15 when the Eagles entertain St. Francis (Pa.) at 1 p.m., and Homecoming is set for Oct. 27 when Pioneer Football League rival Campbell provides the opposition at 1 p.m.

Morehead State Begins Preseason Football Camp Morehead State University Press Release
Preseason football camp is underway at Morehead State as newcomers reported to Jayne Stadium on Saturday and returning players reported on Sunday. More than 100 players are gearing up for the 2012 season. The Eagles will have approximately 30 practices this month in addition to film, conditioning, team and administrative sessions. “This is a wonderful time of year for football coaches, players and fans,” Morehead State Head Coach Matt Ballard said. “The newcomers have been dreaming about playing college football all their lives, and our returning players are hungry to improve on the season we had in 2011.” MSU returns five individuals who earned Pioneer Football League postseason honors a year ago -- Joey Clegg, Rainer Duzan, Zach Lewis, Eric Matteson and Donte Sawyer. All five have received 2012 preseason honors in addition to Dexter Geohagen and Zachary Senvisky. “We’re excited about the starters we have coming back in all three phases of the game,” Ballard said. “We also have some starting spots and key back-up roles up for grabs entering camp, so it will be interesting to see who rises to the occasion over these next four weeks.” The Eagles led all 2011 Football Championship Subdivision schools in first downs (25.2), while ranking second in total offense (478.9) and passing yards (358.2) per game. Two of the newcomers are transfers, while the remainder of the rookies are true freshmen. “It’s fascinating to watch young men from 14 different states mold into one cohesive unit,” Ballard said. “We will spend a lot of time on conditioning and X’s and O’s before our first game, but we have also designed some activities to help build the all-important team chemistry.” Ballard’s assistant coaches for the 2012 campaign are John Gilliam, Rob Tenyer, Chris Garner, Paul Humphries, Thomas Duffy, Matt McCutchan, Mike Simmons and Brett Rude. Morehead State opens regular-season action on Thursday, Aug. 30, when Southern Virginia visits Jayne Stadium at 7 p.m. ET. The Eagles have six home games in 2012. Scouting Report
Coach: Matt Ballard (90-84 in 18 seasons at Morehead State) Last season: 3-8 overall, 2-6 and tied for eighth in the Pioneer League Outlook: Ballard is entering his 19th year at Morehead with enthusiasm about his team and his program. With quarterback Zach Lewis leading the team, the Eagles led the Pioneer League in passing offense, total offense and scoring in 2011. Despite the lethal offense, the Eagles struggled to put together wins. Ballard said his team has gained confidence from their hard work in the spring and in off-season conditioning, and is poised to make some noise in the Pioneer League in 2012. Players to Watch
QB Zach Lewis: Lewis, from Clay County, threw for more than 3,500 yards and 28 touchdowns during his junior season in 2011. "I don't think there is a finer quarterback in the country than Zach Lewis. He is the I-AA version of Drew Brees. If you have never seen him play and you want to know what kind of quarterback he is, picture Drew Brees," Ballard said. "He is a field general with the best eyes in the country. He is an amazing quarterback." Coach Matt Ballard Eagles' schedule

Football Suffers 24-17 Setback at Eastern Kentucky Morehead State University Press Release
The Eastern Kentucky football team ran 86 plays for 440 yards and 29 first downs en route to a 24-17 win over Morehead State in front of 11,600 on Saturday evening at Kidd Stadium. The Colonels, who suffered a loss to Big Ten Conference foe Purdue a week ago, improve to 1-1 on the season. The Eagles, who opened 2012 with a victory over Southern Virginia, slip to 1-1 overall. “The goal is to win games, but I’m proud of how our guys played tonight,” Head Coach Matt Ballard said. “I’ve always said games are played on the field, not on paper. Eastern Kentucky has 63 scholarships and we have none, but you would not have known that with the way we played.” EKU ran 31 more plays than MSU, which led to +127 in yards and +23:32 in time of possession. The Colonels, who offer scholarships and play football in the Ohio Valley Conference, rushed 63 times for 282 yards and accumulated 158 yards via the aerial attack on 23 attempts. Sophomore linebacker Dillion Blackburn finished just one tackle shy of the Morehead State record. He collected 18 stops, including 15 in the first half, while sophomore linebacker Jordan Hendrix added 17 and junior defensive back John Coleman contributed 11. “We had a lot of mismatches on the field tonight, but our guys played with their hearts,” Ballard said. “Dillion had a terrific game and there were several other defensive guys who made plays for us.” Senior quarterback Zach Lewis paced the Eagle offense by completing 28-of-42 attempts for 294 yards and two touchdowns. Lewis Sets Career TD Passes Record in 28-25 Loss at Drake Morehead State University Press Release
Drake used a 21-0 run over a 10-minute stretch of the fourth quarter on Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium and hung on for a 28-25 win over Morehead State in the Pioneer Football League opener for both schools. The Bulldogs improve to 2-2 overall, while the Eagles slip to 1-3. The win was Drake’s third straight in the series and its fourth in four tries between the schools at Drake Stadium. “This game had a championship flavor and feel from start to finish,” MSU Head Coach Matt Ballard said. “Both teams played very hard today. We did some good things in all three phases of the game, but you have to give Drake credit. They made a few more plays in the end.” It was a record-setting day for both quarterbacks. Senior Mike Piatkowski moved his passing yards total to 8,106 at DU, while senior Zach Lewis collected his 56th touchdown toss at MSU. Piatkowski finished 29-of-41 for 268 yards, while Lewis wrapped up 21-of-28 for 172. Morehead State built a 17-7 lead with a first-quarter touchdown and 10 more points in the third period, but Drake responded with 21 of the game’s final 28 points. Lewis found senior wide receiver Donte Sawyer from 26 yards out on MSU’s first possession. Senior kicker Rainer Duzan added a 21-yard field goal in the third quarter, while sophomore slot receiver contributed a 27-yard TD out of the wildcat formation. Piatkowski fired two 16-yard touchdown passes in the final period -- one to sophomore wide receiver J.T. Teague and the other to senior wide receiver Nick Rosa -- while junior running back Gary Scott added a 14-yard sprint to the end zone. MSU sophomore running back Rees Macshara, who finished with a career-best 132 rushing yards on 20 attempts, added a four-yard touchdown with 1:52 remaining. The Eagles stopped the Bulldogs with less than a minute remaining, but Lewis threw an interception in a 2nd-and-3 situation from the MSU 44-yard line with 36 ticks left. MSU collected a season-best 236 rushing yards en route to 408 overall, but was penalized a season-high 12 times for 118 yards. The Eagles also had a season-best 29:10 in time of possession. “I was pleased with our running game today,” Ballard said. “Rees performed very well and you have to give a lot of credit to our offensive linemen. They blocked well and contributed to that total.” Sawyer, who tallied seven catches for 80 yards, was MSU’s top receiver. Sophomore Dillion Blackburn, who entered the affair second in the PFL with 11.3 tackles per game, finished with a team-high 13 stops. Senior Kameron Scott also reached double-figures for the Eagles with 10. Scott led the Drake rushing attack with 119 yards on 28 carries, while senior flanker Joey Orlando tallied 73 yards on eight receptions. The Bulldogs wrapped up the day 9-for-17 on third down. Morehead State will enjoy its only bye week of the season next Saturday. The Eagles return to Jayne Stadium on Oct. 6 when they host Jacksonville at 1 p.m. ET.

Lewis Sets More Career Records in 38-17 Loss to Jacksonville By Matt Segal, MSU athletic media relations
Senior quarterback Zach Lewis set the Morehead State and Pioneer Football League career pass completion records on Saturday afternoon at Jayne Stadium, but the Jacksonville Dolphins rolled up 480 total yards en route to a 38-17 win over the Eagles. JU improves to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in league play with its fifth consecutive victory, while MSU slips to 1-4 on the campaign and 0-2 in conference action with its fourth straight setback. The Dolphins also increase their winning streak to seven games over the Eagles. “We didn’t take advantage of the opportunities we had today, but you have to give Jacksonville a lot of credit,” Head Coach Matt Ballard said. “Their pressure broke down our protection and got us out of sync, which led to poor execution on both sides of the ball.” Morehead State scored first for the fourth time in five contests this year and jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but Jacksonville responded with 31 unanswered points over the final three periods to snag its second PFL road win in the past three weeks. MSU senior wide receiver Kevin Thomas capped a 12-play scoring drive with a one-yard run at the 3:52 mark of the opening quarter. Twenty seconds later, sophomore defensive back Michael Jackson scooped up a fumble and returned it 46 yards for a score. But JU answered the call with four touchdown tosses from freshman quarterback Kade Bell over the final 46 minutes. Sophomore tight end Andrew Robustelli pulled in three of the scores, while sophomore wide receiver D’Andre Randle caught the other. Bell completed 16-of-22 passes for 238 yards, while junior wide receiver Dorian Guy collected a team-high 87 receiving yards and Robustelli added 46. Senior running back Eric Baker paced the Dolphins on the ground, with 18 attempts for 101 yards. Lewis, who broke Morehead State’s career TD passes record on Sept. 22 at Drake, finished 21-of-43 for 182 yards. He is now 787-of-1,285 for 8,557 yards and 56 touchdowns in 34 games as an Eagle. Sophomore linebacker Jordan Hendrix was one shy of his career high with a game-best 16 tackles. The Eagles were credited with five sacks and 12 tackles for loss on the afternoon. Jacksonville finished with advantages of 24-17 in first downs, 226-82 in rushing yards and 254-182 in passing yards. The Dolphins also converted 7-of-14 times on third down. Morehead State lost all four of its fumbles and threw one interception for a total of five turnovers. The Eagles were also flagged four times in the contest for 45 yards. “I don’t care who you play, you can’t turn the ball over that many times,” Ballard said. “We coughed it up inside our own 20-yard line twice -- and that really hurt. We also had too many penalties, including a touchdown that was called back.” Morehead State returns to the road for the next two weeks before playing three of its final four games at Jayne Stadium. The Eagles visit Dayton on Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. ET and Butler on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. Live audio and statistics will be available via MSUEagles.com for both upcoming road contests. “We didn’t do the little things very well today -- and those added up,” Ballard said. “It’s frustrating, but I know our mistakes can be fixed. I don’t question the effort of our young men at all. We battled and competed today, but we need to execute our fundamentals more consistently.”
