December 26, 2004 Changed Their LivesKEVIN and JOYCE sat stunned as they watched scenes of devastation flash on their TV screen December 26, 2004. Within a month, Kevin was on his way to one of the hardest hit tsunami regions in Southeast Asia. In the beginning, Kevin worked alongside coworkers, volunteers, and national believers to remove bodies, build temporary shelters, provide clean water and sanitation, and deliver food to the hungry. Two months later, Kevin and Joyce decided to move their family to the tsunami zone to run a volunteer house and to help rebuild lives. Our love for people and commitment to the Cooperative Program have made the rebuilding of homes, businesses, and schools possible. Kevin and Joyce are seeing people come to faith who would never have known the truth, had it not been for the tsunami. Take a moment and give thanks to God for what He is doing in these tsunami-affected areas. Yellowstone National ParkBRAD LARTIGUE serves as a North American Mission Board resort missionary to Big Sky Resort and Yellowstone National Park in Montana. While many consider resort missions as mostly leisure and fun, Brad believes it's a great place to share the gospel. He leads three worship services, including skier/snowboarder worship services at an outdoor chapel and supervises summer missionaries who minister to more than 3,500 Yellowstone Park employees. Our commitment to working with sister Baptist churches through the Cooperative Program is making a difference in the lives of resort employees and tourists. Ask God to speak through Brad and the summer missionaries who assist him, that those they encounter will take home more than simply memories of a good vacation. They will take home a personal relationship with Christ. STATEMENT: Material things claim much of our attention and drain much of our emotional energy. Jesus anticipated our problems; His parables and many other teachings help us know how to live and give in God's world. Advertising in the Kurdish Newspaper"The Kurdish newspaper in which RONNEY and CLARA SMITH (not their real names) advertise a Bible correspondence course was shut down last year for six months. Since it has been reopened, the responses to the ad have increased to one to two requests a day. More than 400 Kurds and Turks have requested and received a Bible and basic Bible course since the start of the ad campaign three years ago. Recently, the Smiths received a call from a Kurdish man who thanked them for the Bible and course packet and said that his wife wanted to become a Christian. The Smiths have begun meeting regularly in the Kurdish couple's home for prayer and Bible study. God is blessing our commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program. Pray for the Smiths this week and ask God to lead more people to respond to their ad. STATEMENT: Being thankful to God for all His blessings shapes our lives. Thankful people please God. Reaching the Batangenyp And Bicolano PeopleMinistering in the Pacific Rim is a team effort for TERRY and MICHAELLE BUFORD. They work alongside three other couples: DAVE and IVETTE DAGGETT, KIM and KATHY NORTH, and JEFF and KIM CRUSE. Thanks in part to our prayers and our participation in the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, they strive to see churches spring up among the Batangenyo and Bicolano peoples. The Bufords encourage new Christians to share their faith and begin new house churches. During their spring break, three youth went on a mission to Bicol. There they shared their faith, taught Vacation Bible Schools, and led worship services. These were the first Batangenyos to share the message of Christ with the Bicolanos. Pray that more Batangenyos and Bicolanos will be lit with a fire of spreading the love of Christ. STATEMENT: As a church serving Christ, our commitment must reach beyond our immediate community. We give to our church, and then our church gives to the association to help fulfill our mission. International Baptist Church, AustriaPeople from more than 30 different nations worship in the International Baptist Church in Vienna, Austria. TOM and BARB SUITER work as leaders of the church to find a balance among the different cultures and worship styles. The Suiters also lead a Bible study at the United Nations Building in Vienna. Mark (not his real name), a nuclear scientist, has been attending the U.N. Bible study for four years. He had never read the Bible, and he was raised a communist. After years of weekly exposure to the Word, talks over coffee, meals in the Suiters' home, and prayers from so many in the United States, Mark told Tom, “Now, I believe!” You play an important part in conversions like this as you faithfully pray for and participate in the Cooperative Program. Students in Las VegasSTEVE and ANN TIMMONS came to Nevada to build a strong ministry to students at the University of Nevada and Community College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. Steve's ministry includes sharing the gospel with students at one of the most unreached campuses in America. He focuses on reaching students for Christ, discipling them in their Christian walk, and equipping them for missions. Our commitment to making a difference by working with other Baptist churches through the Cooperative Program enables the Timmons to share the gospel and make an impact on the world through these students. Pray for the Timmons this week and that God will draw more and more of these students to a relationship with Jesus. STATEMENT: God created the world. Then He created people to take care of it for Him, to manage it as He would manage it. Using and consuming our resources must be balanced with conservation and renewal. Our giving helps conserve Christian growth and renew a lost world, also. Wesley Garrett Serving in VirginiaNorth American missionary WESLEY GARRETT serves as the community ministries consultant for Richmond Baptist Association in Virginia. He oversees missionaries who direct four Baptist centers located in inner-city communities where there is an abundance of crime, poverty, and people without hope. Approximately 85 percent of the children are from single-family homes, and adults with drug and alcohol addictions are prevalent. From the ends of the earth to the inner cities, God is using our gifts through the Cooperative Program to give people hope. JESUS Film and the Art StudioWAYNE JENKINS blends his love for Christ and for painting in his evangelistic art studio in downtown Cham, Germany. He paints with oils while passersby observe through the large store-front window. Directly across from the best pizzeria in town, on the weekends, groups, teenagers, and children walk into Wayne's studio. Each receives a “JESUS” film DVD German children's edition. Wayne explains that each painting has water in it because of the Living Water that overflows from each person's heart who trusts in Jesus Christ. The children love to find the water in each painting. Our love for people and faithful support of the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering empower creative outreach efforts like this. Pray that God's Spirit will move in the hearts of all the people who view these paintings. STATEMENT: Christ commanded us to proclaim the gospel to the entire world. He is the hope they are searching for. During this Week of Prayer for International Missions and International Missions Study, pray for people around the world who have never heard the name Jesus. Those of us who have hope may give to share the gospel so others, too, may hope in Christ. American Students Reaching Madrid UniversityWith 400,000 to 500,000 university students in the city of Madrid, Spain, and at least 99 percent of them atheists, JAN JOHNSONIUS and the Madrid University Team face the enormous task of reaching Spanish university students in a secular society that teaches them to live for the moment and leaves them spiritually empty. God has been sending believing, study-abroad students from the United States who build personal relationships with Spaniards and share their faith in a natural way. Madrid University Team members build relationships with Spanish students and focus on equipping believing American students to be on mission with God while they study in Spain. Our Cooperative Program gifts are impacting these university students. Ask God to send more Christian students to study in Madrid and that His Spirit will move in the hearts of the Spanish students. Serving God at 50 BelowJOHN and KIM PIEPMEIER serve as Mission Service Corps missionaries in Kiana, Alaska. Their ministry is to Kiana Baptist Mission and the people of Kiana, a Native Alaskan village above the Arctic Circle, where temperatures routinely dip to 50 below during the long winters. Thanks in part to our participation in the Cooperative Program, the Piepmeiers spend their time building relationships in the small village through sports events, children's programs, and daily activities. They are making a difference in the lives of Native Alaskans by sharing the gospel and discipling church members to be effective witnesses for Christ. Sharing With the Jews in GermanySince 1990, scores of Russian Jews have left the former Soviet Union and moved to Israel, the United States, and Germany. In the last 15 years, Germany has received a staggering 300,000 Jewish people. They come with full-refugee status and receive permanent stay. Many are former university teachers, retired scientists, and artists. DANIEL and MIELUSTA BLAJ work with Jews in Germany, thanks in part to our participation in the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. About three years ago, they started a Sabbath group on Friday nights. The Lord has blessed them with churches, Bible study groups, and a coffee house. More than 300 Jews and Gentiles have come to the Lord. Presently, there are nine functioning groups, varying from four to 60 in attendance. Pray more Jews living in Germany will come to know Jesus as Lord. STATEMENT: Sharing Christ with the world is a big part of our stewardship responsibility. We can't “save our lives” and accomplish our mission. The size of that task demands that we invest our lives and resources. The Island of CorsicaLARRY and PATRICIA (“TRISH”) ERWIN work with the Corsicans, an indigenous people group of France. Less than 150,000 of the world's two million Corsicans live on the island of Corsica. Yet the island and its culture are the heart and soul of the Corsican people wherever they live. Less than one-half of one percent of the Corsicans are evangelical believers. Team Corsica prays for the salvation of the Corsican people, the emergence and growth of an indigenous church, and the role of the Corsican believer in advancing the kingdom of God. A small team of Corsicans are preparing the “JESUS” film in the native tongue to reach Corsicans on the islands of Corsica and Sardinia, the European continent, and around the world. Creating a MasterpieceAs a professional sculptor, Mission Service Corps missionary TERRELL O'BRIEN sees a spiritual parallel in his handiwork. God can take something of seemingly little worth and create a masterpiece. Terrell serves as pastor of Warm Valley Baptist in Wyoming. He shepherds more than 50 people—a significant number in rural Wyoming, where isolation and an independent spirit make growing a church a challenge. By patiently building relationships, Terrell and his wife, Vickie, see God changing hearts as they witness to people in their community. In churches large and small, God is blessing our commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program. Add the O'Briens to your prayer list this week. Cooperative Program At Work in WisconsinKEITH and LAURA COGBURN are North American missionaries serving in Wisconsin, where Keith is associational missionary for Lakeland Baptist Association in Milwaukee. Their goal is to join with other Christians in the region to help provide an evangelical witness to the unchurched. The association is comprised of 42 ethnically diverse churches in a seven county region of Southeast Wisconsin. Empowered by Cooperative Program gifts from churches like ours, Keith assists these congregations in their ministries and encourages them to begin new churches in order to reach their communities with the gospel. Thank you for praying for the Cogburns this week. STATEMENT: The birth of Christ is about giving. God gave His Son; the angels gave praise; the shepherds gave witness; the wise men gave gifts. Reaching Out To SusanSeven years ago while in East Asia, ROBERT and TRENNA ALLEN (not their real names) began to share truth with a young college student named Susan. Initially, she was interested in learning more, but then backed away from God. A year or two later, others from the Allens' team began ministering to her. At that point, Susan once again became interested in the gospel and reading God's Word. However, just as before, she grew cold. Recently, the Allens learned that in 2005, Susan sought the Lord and found Him and is now growing in her faith. God is using our support of the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering to send messengers to people like Susan who had no prior knowledge of the good news of God's love offered through Christ. Pray for Susan to mature in her walk and for the Allens as they serve the Lord on the mission field. STATEMENT: Our giving is for God, not for the applause of other people. Motive guides how much we give as surely as it guides how we give. Pleasing God should be our primary concern. English as a Second LanguageKorean, Chinese, Japanese, Lao, Thai, Filipino, Asian Indians, and Vietnamese: JOHN and JUNE YI serve in Alabama as missionaries leading efforts in evangelism, church planting, discipleship, and leadership development among these people groups. John provides English-as-a-Second-Language classes, international family and student ministries, military outreach, and church planting mentorships that offer opportunities to share the Gospel and lead many people to Christ. This week, pray for the Yis that their health may be strong and that more ethnic church planter pastors will respond to God’s call and be trained for the work. Christians are expected to grow, and various leaders have been provided to help us mature in Christlikeness. Spiritual growth usually has an outward expression. University of AlaskaOf the 10,000 students at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, MICHAEL and CATHERINE PURPLE indicate that only 25 are involved in the Baptist Campus Ministry (BCM). The Purples are campus evangelism missionaries seeking to increase that number significantly. Working with area churches, they connect students to Christ and to the local congregations. Since many of the students love outdoor activities, the Purples reach out by planning hikes, camping and ski trips, as well as offering movie nights, weekly fellowship, and Bible study activities. Remote Villages Hear the Life-Changing MessageSTEPHEN and ELAINE HABER travel to the remote West African villages where the Jula people live. Less than one-half of one percent of this Muslim people group have come to know Christ, and no ethnic Jula churches exist. As Stephen travels, he shares the story of Jesus using creative approaches and often has help from short-term teams from partnering churches in the United States. Many of these remote villages are hearing the life-changing message of Christ for the first time. One young Jula man became a believer and then was publicly baptized in a river. Who Created the Mountians?LINDSEY WHITTINGHAM* lives with the Sherpa people on the rooftop of the world – high in the Himalaya Mountains of Nepal. Despite being surrounded by the beauty of God’s creation, most Sherpa people do not know the One who created the mountains in which they live. Recently, two young Sherpa Buddhist monks have made decisions to follow Christ. They live in an area where many seeds have been planted, but previously no Sherpa had come to Christ. Their first night as followers of Christ was spent outside sleeping under a tree, because their families had kicked them out of their homes. Pray that these believers are the first of many Sherpa believers. *Name changed for security reasons STATEMENT: The earth was designed by God to give us food, water, and air to breathe — all of our necessities. A Better Understanding to Accomplish the VisionComing alongside pastors and other church staff to help them better understand and accomplish the vision for their churches is the role of DONALD VICKERS. As director of missions for the Yuma Baptist Association in Arizona, Donald and his wife, MICHELLE, are helping 16 churches (half of which are Hispanic) accomplish all that God desires for them to do in reaching the people in their spheres of influence. Cooperative Program support from churches like ours enables the Vickerses to impact the Kingdom as they plant their lives and new churches in Arizona. Pray that God will provide the laborers and resources to accomplish His work. STATEMENT: When God created people, He had already provided for their every need. God put people in charge of the world to manage it for Him. We are also stewards of the Gospel; giving so the Gospel can be proclaimed is a part of our management responsibility. The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Cooperative Program In PortugalCHARLES and JEANETTE YOUNG have seen God exponentially multiply His church since coming to Portugal. The Youngs work to form groups of seekers and begin Bible studies where they live. In each of the 12 groups they have initiated, people have come to a saving knowledge of Christ. Charles and Jeanette have witnessed God working mightily through one small group leader, Blanca. At one meeting in her home, 11 people became Christians, and others have begun seeking Blanca to discuss spiritual matters. Blanca’s husband is softening to the message of the Gospel, and her mother-in-law has also been asking questions. God is blessing your Cooperative Program gifts in Portugal and around the world. Pray for Blanca and other Portuguese leaders to grow in their love for the Lord and in their passion for sharing that love. STATEMENT: Often the poorest of God’s people find something to give, even in the most difficult of times. This is the kind of commitment needed to win people to Christ and minister to those with physical needs. Generous giving helps accomplish the mission Christ gave to the church. Planting Seeds in JapanJOHN and NANCY NORTON serve the Japanese who live in the two megacity areas of Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. After three months of meeting weekly with the Nortons to study the Bible, a young working woman decided to become a follower of Christ in March of 2007. John and Nancy are praying that she will realize the vision of beginning small-group churches to spread the Gospel throughout Japan. Two teams of college students from the United States also came to help the Nortons. These students shared the Gospel on a local university campus. You empower these outreach efforts as you faithfully support the Cooperative Program. Pray that God will continue to bless the students, faculty, and staff, and that many of them will respond to the seeds of the Gospel the Nortons and other volunteers have been planting. Church Planters Needed in CaliforniaBreaking the spiritual barriers that keep people from knowing Christ in California’s High Desert is the desire of missionaries RICK and ALMA CURTIS. They lead out in planting new churches and establishing a culture of health among existing ones in the area. They live in the fastest growing part of California and do not have enough church planters to meet the need. Pray for wisdom to know how best to do church planting in this area and to recruit pastors. Your love for people and your commitment to the Cooperative Program are putting love in action all along the West Coast. Please add Rick and Alma to your prayer list this week.
