East Asia God Is Always Faithful Missionary MomentOLIVIA BLAIR* serves among students in East Asia. Olivia lives in a 400-square-foot apartment and teaches parttime at a university. Every afternoon, about 50 students come to her office to practice English, and about 200 people a week visit her small apartment — provided, in part, by Cooperative Program gifts — for prayer, fellowship and Bible study. Many students in her group come from minority people groups. She believes God is faithful to bring minority people groups to a place where they can hear and respond to the Gospel and then return to their families, taking their new-found faith to places where foreigners cannot go. *Names changed The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Arizona Filling Holes In Life Missionary MomentNATE PARROW serves with Christian Challenge, a Southern Baptist collegiate ministry that seeks to share God’s love with students in the Phoenix metro area. A recent study of the 77,000 students at Arizona State University found that fewer than 3 percent of the students claim to be followers of Jesus. The students on these campuses are looking to fill all sorts of holes in their lives, and the ministry exists to help introduce them to the one true hope, Jesus Christ. As Nate shares Christ by serving students, your prayers and commitment to missions through the Cooperative Program encourage him. Russia Gospel Access Missionary MomentKELLY and JEANNE MANIRE are gearing up to help with another Winter Olympics. They helped coordinate ministry efforts at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. In 2013, they moved to Russia to help Russian Baptists plant churches and to help coordinate volunteer efforts related to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. They are part of a greater ministry called “Engage Sochi,” which seeks to minister not only during the Olympic Games, but also before and after the games. Arizona Overcoming The Odds Missionary MomentPhoenix and Tucson are home to 5.2 million of the 6 million people of Arizona. Only one out of 10 people in Phoenix claim to be a follower of Jesus, and the city has only one Southern Baptist church for every 19,897 people. As the city coordinator for Send North America: Phoenix, MONTY PATTON is helping to plant new churches in the Phoenix area. Monty and his wife, NANCY, are thankful for your prayers and your commitment to missions through the Cooperative Program. They ask you to pray for God to call more church planters to Arizona. The Netherlands Unlikely Friendships Missionary MomentThe Netherlands is known for bustling cities, beautiful canals and fields of colorful flowers. But The Netherlands is not known for its large Muslim population. Within a few years, statistics project the Muslim population of Amsterdam could reach 50 percent. Approximately 500 mosques and 50 Islamic schools exist in the country. Two-thirds of Dutch North Africans say they are marginalized by Dutch society. This presents a challenge in sharing the Gospel because, as “second-class citizens,” they are not used to being sought after as friends and companions. Cooperative Program gifts support Southern Baptist representatives who share God’s love with Muslims fraught with frustration or despair in the Dutch country. Tajikistan Taking Care of Hearts Missionary MomentThe Kyrgyz people live tucked into a valley far from the hustle and bustle of city life in the Muslim land of Tajikistan. The Kyrgyz live in villages, as their Tajik neighbors do, where they grow potatoes. Humanitarian aid organizations teach them better ways to tend to their lands, but no one tends to their hearts. Approximately 125,000 Kyrgyz live in Tajikistan, with roughly 11, 000 in a very high-altitude area. The Kyrgyz of Tajikistan are completely unreached for Christ; there are no Christian believers among them. Cooperative Program gifts will help fund the training and practical needs of the people God calls to take His Gospel to the Kyrgyz. Sharing the Love of God (Russia) On a cold, winter day, missionaries MICHAEL and PATSY HOLYFIELD and their son, Caleb, arrived at a house in the middle of a small village in Far East Russia. They went to the village to tell Maria and others about God’s love. Maria accepted a Bible and asked them to pray for her husband, Veleri, who had a sad, sunken face, no legs and only one arm. The Holyfields shared the Gospel, and both Veleri and Maria accepted Jesus as Savior. The Holyfields are the only missionaries within 1,500 miles in any direction. The work is difficult, but Cooperative Program gifts help them take the Good News into Russian villages. Fellowship with Others (Southeast Asia) Two young Christian women, one married and one single, have recently expressed a desire to IMB workers in Southeast Asia for more intense Bible study. The women longed for true fellowship with others focused on Christ. However, they don’t yet know each other, so it is interesting for them to come separately and say, “I have renewed passion for my First Love. Can you help me grow?” A worker asks, “Please pray that our time will be honoring to the Lord and, indeed, the start of a great revival that spreads.” Gifts through the Cooperative Program provide the means for missionaries to follow God wherever He leads and disciple new believers. Planting and Strengthening Churches (Alaska) JOE and CINDY BONEY both heard God’s call to ministry at an early age but not recognize it was a call to missions until they were involved in a local church plant that taught, gave and served in missions. The Boneys served in several states, planting and pastoring churches and serving in community ministries. Today Joe serves in the Tongass Baptist Association in Alaska where communities can only be reached by plane or boat. Because of your faithful giving through the Cooperative Program, Joe and Cindy are ministering to diverse ethnic communities where 97 percent is unchurched. Pray as they seek to plant new churches and strengthen existing congregations. In the Spheres of Influence (Arizona) CHRIS and BRENNA STULL have a vision to connect people to Christ and help them walk with Him for a lifetime. Chris’s extensive experience with local, state, national and international missions qualifies him to lead believers and his church to discover where God is at work in the West Valley of Phoenix. Your faithful giving through the Cooperative Program makes it possible for Chris to encourage his congregation to live out their Christian walk in their spheres of influence by casting vision, equipping volunteers, procuring resources and working alongside community organizations. Planting Calls for Strategy (California) ROBBY PITT, a Virginia native, has worked his way across the country in ministry. As NAMB’s Send City coordinator for Los Angeles, he uses his skills and experience in strategizing the planting of churches, including ethnic churches, and in mentoring church planters to advance the Gospel in Los Angeles. The sheer size of Los Angeles calls for considerable strategy with any attempt to reach the city. Your generous donations through the Cooperative Program make ministry in Los Angeles possible. Pray that people in this very influential city will realize that riches and fame are fleeting. Pray they will realize their eternal hope is in Jesus alone. Bible Reference and Statement: John 3:16 The highest example of giving is God giving His Son. God gave that we might have eternal life. That others may also have eternal life is a motive for our giving. Depending Upon the Lord (South Asia) In the small Louisiana town where ALETA BALLINGER* grew up, foreign languages were not even taught. She never imagined that one day she and her husband would serve as language coaches for new missionaries in South Asia. “God used the difficult and slow process of language learning to teach me what it means to be dependent on Him—to trust Him,” she says. The Ballingers, along with their four children, have served for more than a decade in several South Asian countries. Gifts to the Cooperative Program support workers like the Ballingers as they teach new missionaries to communicate the Gospel in the heart language of their people group. Multiethnic Family of Faith (California) VICTOR SCHLOSS is the Send City coordinator for San Diego and pastor of The Body Church. The Body can best be described as a multiethnic family serving one another as Jesus did. These individuals come from all walks of life, allowing the church to reach a variety of people groups in the city where only 9.8 percent of the 3.1 million people claim to be evangelical. Because you give through the Cooperative Program, people in San Diego are giving their lives to Christ and experiencing His unconditional love through this church. Craft Scripture Stories (Deaf) The Deaf of East Asia are Bible-less. No Scripture is available in their Sign Language. A team of eight Deaf believers from across East Asia has gathered together to change that. Through the StoryOne Project and under the leadership of AMY* and MYISHE*, two single, Deaf missionaries, the Deaf Asians have recently begun work to craft 150 Scripture stories into Sign Language. Simultaneously this team will be working to plant nine Deaf churches. Life Lessons (Canada) BOB and DEBBIE SHELTON came to Canada in 1984 to start a church in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Through 15 years of church planting and pastoring, many life lessons were learned. Today Bob serves as the Send City coordinator for both Calgary and Edmonton. The Calgary-Edmonton corridor is the most urbanized area of Alberta and one of Canada’s four most urban regions as Canadians and immigrants move to the area seeking higher learning at the many universities or fortunes in oil work. Sadly, statistics show that only 5.5 percent of this growing population is evangelical. When you support the Cooperative Program, you are helping bring the Gospel to this area. Pray for local leaders to own and implement a church planting strategy and for partners to join in this work. Step Out in Faith (East Asia) With their children grown, the couple overcame family, health and financial obstacles to get to the mission field. Once in their East Asian city, they flourished and boldly shared their faith. During a three-year term, they learned the local language and the culture, met scores of people and made many new friends. They also hosted more than 300 Bible studies, led 50 people to faith in Christ and baptized 41 of them. By stepping out in faith, they experienced, more deeply than ever before, God’s abundant goodness and provision. A Living Relationship with Jesus (Connecticut) Before coming to Connecticut, RILEY PRATHER was a student pastor in rural Oklahoma. He had always told his kids to follow Jesus into the unknown. He just never expected the “unknown” to be the under-served state of Connecticut. Running to Hear the Truth (East Africa) As IMB missionary NICK STEEL* waited in his car for a friend, a security guard approached and said, “I can’t explain it, but as soon as I saw your car I was compelled to run to you. … I don’t know why!” Nick shared the Gospel with the man; he heard the story of Jesus for the first time that day. Sharing the Gospel (Thailand) JOHN and RUTH LAPOS understand what it means to have one’s life transformed. Working as church planters at the Baptist Student Center in Bangkok, Thailand, has given them front-row seats to witness Christ’s impact. Introduced to a Christian Friend (East Asia) As two traveling Christian workers enjoyed a hotel meal, an acquaintance unexpectedly joined them in their travels. Although he was not known as a strong Christian, the unexpected guest pointed out a young hotel worker and said, “She needs to know Jesus.” Soon, they were introduced to the young lady and were swiftly given the opportunity to share the Gospel.
