Cling to the Living Tree (Mozambique) Andrew,* a young Yao believer, told missionary NATE SCHOEN his testimony of how he put aside customary rituals to cling to Jesus. Darkness was all he had known until a new friend came along to share the Good News. “A missionary arrived and regularly taught me about Jesus,” Andrew explained. “I saw that I could finally let go of that rotting log and cling to a strong, living tree.” Thanks to Cooperative Program gifts, Nate can encourage believers to be more active in bringing the Gospel to those who long for hope, but have heard nothing about Jesus. The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. A Relationship with Jesus (Hawaii) MARINO RAMONES, a former pastor in the Philippines, and his family started a church in Hawaii in May 2013. Most of their members are Filipinos who work in the island’s macadamia, coffee and mamaki farms. People in the community and church are religious, believing their religious activities guarantee their salvation. It’s hard to help them see the difference between having religion and having a relationship with Jesus. Your support through the Cooperative Program will help provide a much needed church building in this community. Pray that God will grant wisdom in leading the church and will draw people who are searching for truth. Repairing Hearts and Lives (Illinois) MICHAEL ALLEN has known Jesus since childhood. As an adult, God called him away from repairing computers to repairing hearts and lives. The Lord impressed upon Michael that only two things will last forever—God’s Word and the souls of men. Michael now serves as the pastor for Uptown Baptist Church and as NAMB’s Send City coordinator for Chicago. He works to identify new church planters and partners to help carry out the work of planting healthy, reproducing churches in Chicagoland. Your support through the Cooperative Program has helped to plant 40 churches in Chicago in the past five years. Pray against the present culture of death there and for a new culture of life. Sharing the Good News (Thailand) Baptist workers serving in Thailand shared the good news of Jesus with a man in a coffee shop. The team was surprised when he said he had heard it before. He said he had read it in the holy books of Moses and Isa (Jesus). As it turned out, he had brought a Bible back from Malaysia. Pray that God’s Word will speak to this man and that he will believe and surrender to the truth. He is interested in meeting with Christians to read the Bible together. Cooperative Program gifts support workers in Thailand, who will disciple others who show an interest in reading God’s Word. Using Biblical Principles in Parenting (South Asia) ARCHER and ROCHELLE HULLETT* work to make their home in South Asia a place of peace. They want to model by example a Christ-centered home. The Hulletts meet with national pastors and their wives. Through their time together, the Hulletts impart an example of a godly marriage and family in a place where no other biblical teaching on family is available. “They love their children, but there’s no discipline,” Rochelle says. They encourage other busy parents to set aside daily time with the Lord and use biblical principles in parenting. Because you give through the Cooperative Program, the Hulletts can exemplify a Christian family and bring hope to families in South Asia. Encouraging Partnerships (Indiana) CHRIS and PAULA KELLERMEYER serve in Indiana. Chris is NAMB’s Send City coordinator for Indianapolis, working to strategize church planting and encourage partnerships with church plants in Indy. Indianapolis is known as a good place to raise a family—the perfect balance of cosmopolitan style and small-town charm. For many, this good clean living may be the greatest stumbling block for movement of the Gospel. Many Indy residents believe they’re “good enough” and have no need for a Savior. Their search for the “American Dream” has drowned out their overwhelming need for Jesus. You can help the Kellermeyers through your prayers, gifts and partnership through the Cooperative Program as they claim Indianapolis for Christ. God’s Timeline Can Be Different (Kansas) DON MAYBERRY had been telling the Lord he wanted to start a cowboy church when he retired. But God’s timeline was a bit different. After serving as pastor in several churches for nearly 40 years and serving as state director of missions for Illinois, Don and his wife SHERRY left a strong suburban church to plant Three Wooden Crosses Cowboy Church in Augusta, Kansas. Your prayers and support through the Cooperative Program are helping make Jesus known among farm and ranch families in Kansas. A Joy Filled Heart (Deaf) Melly*, a Deaf Muslim, was drawn to the sweetness of the Spirit and began attending a meeting where God was discussed. Yet still after one year Melly had no spiritual understanding about the God she sought. The hearing believers began to seek ways to disciple Melly in her heart language—Sign Language. One day, Deaf missionary RUBY GREENE* visited Melly. The two women, from world’s apart but both Deaf, connected. Ruby’s hands illuminated God’s truth and Melly’s understanding of God deepened. Great joy filled Ruby’s heart when Melly became a believer. Your Cooperative Program gifts make it possible for Deaf missionaries to help the Deaf grow in their faith. Knowing Jesus (Kentucky) WES SHIPLEY is a bivocational church planting intern in Glasgow, Kentucky. On weekends and nights, he helps lead small groups at Coral Hill Baptist Church. During the week, however, he works with his state government to determine eligibility for food stamps and Medicaid. Many people who live in Wes’s community believe they are Christians because of the strong church presence and Christian culture there. “Around here everyone has heard about Jesus and everyone thinks they know Jesus, but the reality is people know church and religion,” Wes says. Wes prays that people will encounter the truth of God’s love and be drawn to church. Your Cooperative Program gifts can help make this happen. When the Heart Is Weak (Central Asia) Christian worker NAN KIRKBY and her teammate recently visited with their friend Azad.* Bedridden for months, Azad’s heart is weak from years of battling leprosy. Be Responsible (Mexico) Valley Baptist Church of Bakersfield, California, prayed about taking the Gospel to an unengaged, unreached people group in southern Mexico. CHRIS AMMONS, a missionary in Mexico, offered to help them find the best fit. Chris visited a rural area where he made a stunning discovery — the local people had a large migrant population living just 20 miles from Bakersfield. Valley Baptist made a long-term commitment to take responsibility for this people group. The church regularly sends teams to both the people in southern Mexico and the 700 immigrants in central California. Gifts given through the Cooperative Program support missionaries, like Chris, who guide Southern Baptist churches in reaching unengaged, unreached people groups. Opening the Door with the Gospel (Bulgaria) CAMERON and JENNIFER PHILLIPS, along with their two sons, work in Sofia, Bulgaria, with the Roma people, the unwanted Gypsies of Eastern Europe. They are encouraging existing churches to reach out to the Roma and plant churches. They face many challenges such as the horrors of human trafficking (including parents who “rent out” their young children for the day and the common custom of virgin bride sales), organized crime and theft. In addition to Cameron’s church planting strategies, Jennifer is active in children’s ministries with the Roma. Cooperative Program gifts support missionaries like the Phillipses, who were placed near the Roma, opening the door for a Gospel witness. Teachers Making a Difference (Southeast Asia) An IMB worker in Southeast Asia had an opportunity to teach at a local school. Because the country has five national religions (Christianity included), local schools are required to have a teacher from each faith if there are enough students enrolled. When she and her national partner arrived at the school, they were amazed to have 60 students in the class. The national partner spoke for an hour, clearly sharing the Gospel with the students. When she finished, asking if there was anyone who wanted to commit their lives to Christ, 40 students stood up. Thanks to gifts through the Cooperative Program, Christian workers are able to go and share the truth boldly. Melt the Hearts of Stone (Massachusetts) ANDREW BELLI helps lead a church plant in a suburb of Boston. One of the suspects of the Boston Marathon bombing was found hiding very near his church. His church is young, representing a good cross-section of Boston. Many are highly educated and are studying or teaching at Harvard, MIT or Wellesley. At least 46 percent of Bostonians claim no religion at all, and many are suspicious of, if not hostile toward, evangelical Christianity. The universities have created a culture of pluralism that rejects the Gospel’s message of faith in God alone. As you give sacrificially through the Cooperative Program, pray the Holy Spirit will melt hearts of stone so the seed of the Gospel can take root. Financial and Spiritual Crisis (Michigan) WAYNE PARKER grew up in metro Detroit. His experience as a church planter, church planting catalyst and a director of missions has equipped him for his current position as NAMB’s Send City coordinator for the city of Detroit. Though church buildings dot the city, many that once housed some of the great Gospel voices in the country now sit virtually empty on Sunday mornings. he Value of Loving People (Minnesota) A few years ago, God called JONATHAN LEMASTER and his family to help revive Northern City Baptist Church, which having only eight members remaining was dying. The church had a 50-year history of launching other churches and missions but had fallen on hard times. Today, Jonathan serves as pastor there and as a church planter in the area. The harsh weather in northern Minnesota has created a tough, isolated and sometimes difficult-to-approach culture among the people, but the Lemasters have fallen in love with them. Pray for a passion to win the lost to Jesus and for the mentoring program at Ligon Middle School. Pray for a movement of the Holy Spirit in downtown Raleigh!
