South Laurel will play Clay County at Tiger Stadium September 9. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM. The Clay County football team will travel to Russell County October 14 for a district game. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
The Sentinel-Echo South Laurel hosts Russell County Friday night in football By Denis House, Sports Editor LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — To stop Russell County, you must first stop Nick Britt. The junior tailback has been almost impossible to contain in the Lakers first two games of the season. Britt rushed for five touchdowns and had more than 350 total yards in Russell County’s 48-21 opening night win over Marion County. By halftime, he had already amassed 201 yards and four touchdowns. In last week’s 30-0 win over Whitley County, he again ran wild, rushing for 89 yards in the first half, and at the start of the second half, he had a 74-yard touchdown run. Both teams come into tonight’s game with identical 2-0 records. The Lakers have scored 78 points for an average of 39 points per game, while allowing 39, or 10.5 ppg. The Cardinals have scored 68 points (34 ppg) and have allowed 34 (19.5 ppg). With such similar statistics, it might come down to the team that makes the fewest mistakes. The Cardinals are looking to go to 3-0 for the first time since 2005. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. tonight at South Laurel High School. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1078446221/Containing-Britt-a-must-for-Cards

Middlesboro Daily News Bell County pulls away for 63-20 win over Jackets
There was an electric atmosphere at Bradner Stadium Friday night as the Bell County Bobcats and Middlesboro Yellow Jackets renewed their rivalry in front of well over 3,000 fans in the City/County Bowl. The Jackets competed hard with the heavily-favored Bobcats for most of the first half, but Bell pulled away in the second half for a 63-20 win. Bobcat senior running back Cory Davenport again showed why he deserves consideration for Mr. Football. He ran for 198 yards on nine carries, including TD runs of 30, 5, 54, and 40 yards — and also intercepted a pair of passes on defense to lead the Bell County cause. Junior Jonathan Polly ran ten times for 135 yards and a touchdown while Tyler Green caught two touchdown passes from Corey Oslonian. Bell County (2-1) plays at Whitley County next Friday at 7:30 p.m. Bell junior running back Ryan Collett will hopefully be back for that game. He spent his second straight game in street clothes Friday night after suffering a concussion in the season opener. The Sentinel-Echo Russell County back scores 6 touchdowns, has 339 total yards in 60-39 win over South Laurel By Denis House, Sports Editor
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The Los Angeles Lakers of the 1980s were dubbed “Showtime” after capturing five NBA titles with the likes of Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Russell County’s Lakers also have their version of “Showtime” in the form of running back Nick Britt, who scored six touchdowns Friday night as the Lakers rolled past South Laurel, 60-39, to hand the Cardinals their first loss of the season. Britt carried the ball 16 times for 186 yards and four touchdowns on runs of 3, 26, 42 and 54 yards. He also caught a touchdown pass that covered 63 yards, and ran a kickoff back 90 yards to pay dirt. The Lakers (3-0) scored on seven of their first eight possessions to build a 40-26 lead at the half. Of the 13 total plays for the game, Russell County scored on nine of them. The Panthers are coming off a disappointing 34-28 loss to Perry Central and now find themselves sitting at 2-1 on the season and they’re going to right their ship Friday against the Highlanders. Gatlinburg-Pittman, who is 1-1, is also coming off a loss, as they dropped a 35-0 decision to Swain County, Tenn. Friday’s game will mark the second of three games Knox Central will play against Tennessee teams. South Laurel at Clay County: Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. tonight in Manchester.
sentinel-echo.com South Laurel travels to Clay County tonight By Denis Housem, Sports Editor
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Last week you couldn’t argue with South Laurel’s offense. After all, the Cardinals put up 39 points against Russell County. Unfortunately, the defense allowed 60 points. On two separate occasions, the South Laurel defense was playing a man short due to players taking themselves out of the game without notifying a coach. On those two occasions, the Lakers scored touchdowns. South can’t afford those kinds of mistakes when it travels to Clay County tonight. Offensively, the Cardinals were led by quarterback Tyler Detherage who completed 22 of 38 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns. He was also picked off twice. And he spread the wealth around by throwing to several receivers. Josh Brown caught nine passes for 104 yards and a touchdown. Jeremy Prichard caught six passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Jeff Hale also caught a touchdown, while Austin Rader hauled in two passes for 34 yards. The Tigers have started the season 0-3, and are coming off their worst loss in five years. Clay fell to Johnson Central, 40-6, in the Appalachian Bowl last week. The last time Clay was beaten that badly was in 2006, when it lost to Rockcastle County, 61-13. The 0-3 start also marks the first time Clay has started the season losing its first three games since 2002, when the Tigers finished 0-10. The Tigers finished last season 8-4, advancing to the second round of the playoffs before falling to Pulaski County. But Clay lost several players to graduation off that team. Gone are Clay’s top four rushers, including Noah Reid (982 yards, 14 touchdowns), C.J. Miller (881 yards, 12 touchdowns) and John Wilson (498 yards, four touchdowns). Wilson also quarterbacked the team, completing 89 of 191 passes for 1,649 yards and 20 touchdowns. Clay also lost good receivers in Reid (24-433 yards, four touchdowns), Miller (13-151 yards and two TDs) and John V. Hooker (23-488, 10 touchdowns). The lone returning receiver with experience is junior Joey Dezarn, who caught 22 passes for 483 yards and four touchdowns last year. Last year, the Tigers beat the Cardinals, 62-40. It marked the second straight year South lost to its bordering county, losing 30-13 in 2009. The Cardinals be without the services of Jesse Thomas, who cut his hand last week and will be out two weeks. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x803549189/Defense-can-t-rest-against-Tigers

middlesborodailynews.com Bell wins at Whitley by JAY COMPTON, Sports Editor
It wasn’t quite the blowout many were expecting, but the Bell County Bobcats escaped Whitley County with a 35-10 win Friday. The Colonels focused much of their attention on slowing down Cory Davenport and the Bobcat running game. The strategy was successful as the contained Bell’s standout senior to 88 yards on 18 carries and kept him out of the end zone for the first time this season. Picking up the offensive slack was junior quarterback Corey Oslonian. He completed 6-of-11 passes for 101 yards and touchdowns of 13 and 15 yards to Tyler Green and eight yards to Jonathan Polly. Bell County (3-1) is off next week before heading to Wayne County for their first game in their new district on September 23. sentinel-echo.com South Laurel turns the ball over five times in 46-34 loss to Clay County By Denis House, Sports Editor
MANCHESTER, Ky. — Miscues, missed tackles and missed opportunities. That’s what happened to South Laurel Friday night, and the Cardinals paid for it in a 46-34 loss to Clay County. The Cardinals (2-2) turned the ball over five times, allowed three rushing touchdowns and an 86-yard kickoff return for a score, and three times they advanced inside the Clay County (1-3) 10 yard line with no points to show for it. “We didn’t play very well,” coach Larry Welch said. “Their offensive line whipped us. We’ve got to get it together.” The Tigers’ line opened several holes for the trio of Corey Corum, Zack McGeorge and Joey Dezarn. Corum rushed for 194 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown. He also returned a kickoff 86 yards for a score. Dezarn had 19 carries for 77 yards, and quarterback McGeorge carried the ball 11 times for 87 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw three touchdowns and had one interception. Dezarn caught one touchdown, while Karr caught two TDs. On the other side, South quarterback Tyler Detherage was 16-of-34 for 382 yards and four touchdowns. But he was also picked off four times. Jeremy Prichard caught five passes for 142 yards and a touchdown, Josh Brown had five catches for 124 yards and two scores, and Jeff Hale pulled down four passes for 91 yards and a touchdown. The Times-TribuneWhitley hoping to get win Number One against Tigers By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
The Whitley County Colonels might be 0-3, but coach Jim Black likes the direction his team is going. Black’s Colonels will try to snap their four-game losing streak, which dates back to last season, at home Friday against Clay County. The two teams have turned in tremendous battles in the past with the series being tied at seven-all. The Tigers are coming off a 46-34 win at home over South Laurel and could easily be 2-2, but dropped a close 40-38 decision to Garrard County in their season-opener. Their other two losses have come against Marion County (31-14) and Johnson Central (40-6). The Colonels’ schedule hasn’t been a cakewalk by any means. They’ve played Russell County (30-0), Rockcastle County (36-3) and Bell County (33-10), who are all ranked in the top 10 of their respective classes. The improvement was apparent last week against Bell County. The Colonels lost by 23 points, but only trailed 19-7 at halftime. Black also said he would like for his team to put up some points Friday. The Colonels have only scored 13 points this season. thetimestribune.com/sports/x2127771599/Whitley-hoping-to-get-win-No-1 The Clay County football team will travel to Russell County October 14 for a district game. The Times-Tribune Jaguars ready to face-off against Russell County By Tim Branstetter, Staff Writer
The North Laurel Jaguars are one of the hottest teams in the area after starting the season with a 3-1 record, including a 48-12 win last week over McCreary Central, but things get a lot tougher this week as they face the unbeaten Russell County Lakers. The Lakers are coming off a 56-33 win over Pulaski County and have one of the best backs in the state. Nick Britt has ran for four touchdowns in three different games this season, including a 193-yard performance against Pulaski County. Britt has 17 touchdowns in only four games. The Jaguars are led by tailback Gabe Blair and quarterback Michael Nelson. Blair ran the ball 21 times last week for 175 yards and two touchdowns, while Nelson carried the ball eight times for 160 yards and three touchdowns. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1660693577/Jaguars-ready-to-face-off-against-Russell-County The Clay County football team will travel to Knox Central September 30 for a district game. The Times-Tribune Panthers set to play third straight road game By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
Scottie Russell’s Knox Central Panthers will play their third game of the season against another Tennessee team Friday, as they will hit the road to face-off against the Clinton Dragons. The Panthers are coming off a 34-20 win over Gatlinburg-Pittman, Tenn. and have also recorded a 42-6 victory over Tennessee’s Lancaster Christian Academy. Unlike Knox Central (3-1), the Dragons (0-4) haven’t had a successful season so far. They’ve been outscored 125-12 this season and haven’t reached paydirt in since their season-opening 25-12 loss to the Halls, Tenn. Red Devils. Clinton has been outscored 104-0 during its last three games. Knox Central responded from its disappointing loss to Perry Central a couple of weeks ago with a convincing 14-point victory last week on the road. thetimestribune.com/sports/x2127771593/On-the-Road-Again

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — RUSSELL SPRINGS—When North Laurel bulled its way downfield on the opening possession, it looked like the game plan worked well. And maybe it would have. The Jaguars were eating up clock and keeping a powerful Russell County offense off the field. There would be missed tackles and missed assignments as North Laurel fell 34-0 to the unbeaten Lakers. There was little consolation in the fact only one other team has held Russell County to fewer points. The Perry Central Commodores are undefeated, sitting at 5-0 with every win redefining the program. Coach Justin Haddix knows his schedule is tough, but knows the rewards it could bring come postseason. He likes the way his kids are responding; he likes the progression over the past few weeks. Now, they have another test this Friday when undefeated Rockcastle County comes to PCC. However, the question mark for Haddix, the status of Rockets Running back, Clarke Rowe, who separated his shoulder last week against Pulaski County. If Rowe is unable to play, the Rockets have plenty of options to put points on the board. Big plays help Bobcats pull away by JAY COMPTON, Sports Editor
On a night where Wayne County took twice as many snaps on offense, the Bell County Bobcats made theirs count with several big plays as they pulled away for a 42-17 win. Cory Davenport had touchdown runs of 55 and 8 yards and added an 88 yard punt return for the Bobcats. He finished with 102 yards rushing on nine carries. Junior quarterback Corey Oslonian was Bell’s leading rusher on night with 114 yards on nine carries, including a 63-yard touchdown that gave the Bobcats the lead for good with 9:56 to play in the first half. Oslonian also completed 3-of-6 passes for 84 yards with a 68-yard touchdown pass to Jeffrey Saylor in the fourth quarter. Bell County (4-1) hosts Casey County next Friday night while Wayne County (5-1) hosts Corbin. www.middlesborodailynews.com/view/full_story/15658954/article-Big-plays-help-Bobcats-pull-away

The Clay County football team will travel to Knox Central September 30 for a district game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
The Times-Tribune After five weeks away from home, Knox Central returns to Panther Stadium to take on Clay County
After being on the road for the past five weeks, Scottie Russell’s Knox Central Panthers will finally get to host a game Friday, which will be a district contest against struggling Clay County. The Panthers’ lone home game of the season was back on Aug. 19, a 42-6 win over Lancaster Academy, Tenn. So after trips to Lexington, Manchester, Harlan and two different stops in Tennessee, Knox Central is finally back home. The Panthers (4-2) are coming off a 34-14 loss to Class 5A power Harlan County, which Russell hopes his team can erase the memory off Friday. Many expected Clay County to be up and down this season and that perception has been right on the money. The Tigers have losses to Garrard County, Marion County, Johnson Central and Whitley County and managed its lone win at home against South Laurel, winning 46-34.

middlesborodailynews.com Bell County get defensive in rout of Casey County, will be in Manchester Friday by JAY COMPTON, Sports Editor
LOG MOUNTAIN — In their most dominating performance of the season the Bell County defense held Casey County to just 86 total yards and forced five turnovers as the Bobcats cruised to a 47-0 homecoming win Friday night. Junior quarterback Corey Oslonian completed 6-of-10 passes for 104 yards and touchdowns of seven and 37 yards to Tyler Green. Green caught five passes for 96 yards. Running back Cory Davenport did a little bit of everything with an even 100 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries, a 32-yard completion to Green on a half back pass and he evened pinned the Rebels at their own 10-yard line with a 40-yard punt. The standout senior also caught a pass for ten yards and added a two-point conversion run. Alex Bolin led Casey County with 22 rushing yards on nine carries while Rance Carman added 19 yards on 11 carries and quarterback Will Hatter gained 18 yards on eight carries. The Rebels’ most successful play of the night came in the second half when punter James Burton bobbled a low snap and found room to run for a 13-yard gain and a first down. Casey County (3-4, 1-1 in district play) hosts Wayne County next Friday. Bell County (5-1, 2-0) plays at Clay County Friday with the kick-off scheduled for 7 p.m. www.middlesborodailynews.com/view/full_story/15859107/article-Bobcats-get-defensive-in-rout

The Times-Tribune After five-week hiatus, Panthers greet fans with win By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
A home game turned out to be the perfect remedy for the Knox Central Panthers. The Panthers were coming off a 20-point road loss to Harlan County and needed some much-needed confidence and momentum. And after playing the past five weeks on the road, Scottie Russell’s squad opened district play in fine fashion by blowing out visiting Clay County, 52-8. The win improved Knox Central to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in district play. The 52-point output is the most Russell’s squad has scored this season. Clay County’s lone score came with 5:12 remaining in regulation. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1953751123/Home-is-where-the-win-is

Lakers fall 29-27 to undefeated Rockcastle County in overtime
The Russell County Lakers fell 29-27 to the undefeated Rockcastle County Rockets in Mt. Vernon in a heartbreaking overtime finish in the first district game of the season. The loss was the Lakers' first on the year as their record now stands at 6-1. It was a battle the entire game as the Lakers had to use a number of big plays to keep up with the homestanding Rockets, whose staunch defense kept the Russell County ground attack in check for much of the night. The Lakers will return to action on Friday October 14th when they host the Clay County Tigers at Ron Finley Field at Laker Stadium at 7 p.m. russellcountynewspapers.com/viewer/default.aspx

The Times-Tribune Knox Central has key game this Friday against unbeaten Rockcastle County By Les Dixon, Sports Writer
Scottie Russell’s Knox Central Panthers have a big task in front of them when undefeated Rockcastle County comes to town Friday. The Rockets (7-0) will bring one of the state’s top defenses to Panther Stadium, as Scott Parkey’s team is allowing only 10 points a game. Both the Panthers (5-2) and the Rockets enter Friday’s contest with identical 1-0 district records and the winner of the game will be in the driver’s seat for the district’s top seed. Rockcastle County also has a very good rushing attack as well. The Rockets are averaging close to 300 yards a game on the ground, as Clarke Rowe leads the way with 776 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Chris Luna has 640 rushing yards and seven scores. Knox Central also has a pretty solid running game, too. The Panthers are averaging more than 240 yards a game rushing the ball, as Jeffrey Canady leads the team with 721 yards and 10 touchdowns. Jonathan Gist had 520 rushing yards and four scores, while Kyle Hammons has carried the ball 22 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns. Another key player for the Panthers is quarterback Jonathan Barger, who has completed 59-of-105 pass attempts for 1,222 yards and 11 touchdowns. He’s only thrown two interceptions the entire season. His two main targets are Canady (22 catches for 567 yards and two touchdowns) and Jason Mitchell (11 catches for 246 yards and four touchdowns). thetimestribune.com/sports/x350480798/Knox-Central-has-key-game-this-Friday-against-unbeaten-Rockcastle-County

The Times-Tribune Panthers blow out Rockcastle County By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
The Knox Central Panthers lived up to the preseason hype by dominating previously unbeaten Rockcastle County at home, 40-14. The Panthers (6-2 overall, 3-0 in district play) jumped out to a 33-0 lead and never looked back, as they moved one step closer to their first-ever district championship. Knox Central will now shift its focus on to Friday’s road district match-up with upstart Russell County. A win over the Lakers will give the Panthers the district championship. It didn’t take long for the Panthers to take charge in the game, as Panther quarterback Jonathan Barger turned in a career game in only two quarters, as he threw for four touchdowns that went for scores of seven, 31, 37, and 70 yards. He also threw for more than 175 yards in the first half to give his team a 27-0 edge. The Panthers led 33-0 before Rockcastle County finally scored its first touchdown of the game with 10:04 remaining in the third quarter. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1372399010/Panthers-blow-out-Rockcastle-County

wymtsports Tony Saylor "By the Father of Football"
You've heard the saying, defense wins championships. But for one of our mountain top ten teams, a coach takes that saying to heart. Rockcastle county Defensive Coordinator Tony Saylor has helped the Rockets earn respect in the state with his bright mind, and his ability to push his kids to play as hard as they can. If there is one constant with Rockcastle County Football, it's passion and heart for the game. Tony Saylor has brought that mentality to the Rocket's program. In 1985, he became the defensive coordinator, the title he holds today. Saylor is described as a tireless worker, who begins preparation on Rock's next opponent immediately, studying film on Saturday and preps on Sunday. And even though he's been coaching for almost three decades, he has no plans of hanging his headset up any time soon. www.wkyt.com/wymtsports/headlines/Tony_Saylor_By_the_Father_of_Football_131966018.html

Clay County Tiger Football 2011
Middlesboro Daily News Pairings for the KHSAA playoffs
Friday night marks the final regular season games for high school football in the area and the pairings for the KHSAA playoffs the following week have been determined. Knox Central (6-3) suffered a bitter 28-22 loss at Russell County (8-1) last Friday. Instead of their first ever district championship, the Panthers fell into a three-way tie with the Lakers and Rockcastle County in District 6, Class 4A. Based on the KHSAA three-way tie-breaker of total combined wins by any four defeated opponents, Rockcastle (9-1) gets the top seed while Russell is second and Knox third. The Panthers will open the playoffs on the road at Boyle County (6-3). Rock hosts Marion County (3-6) on the other side of that bracket and will host the second round game if they win. Lexington Catholic (9-1) is the District 5 champion and will play at home through the state semifinals as long as they win. They’ll open the playoff against Kenny Roark’s rebuilding Clay County Tigers (1-8). Russell County hosts Mercer County (4-5) in the other first round game. Here’s a look at the Class 2A, Region 4 bracket. Leslie County (7-2) has been one of the more surprising teams in the state this season, and Eddie Melton’s Eagles continued to surprise with a 28-19 win at Prestonsburg last week to win the District 8 championship. That means Middlesboro (3-6) will be heading to Hindman Nov. 4 for a first round playoff game. The Jackets showed signs of improvement against Somerset last week. They have to feel a little better going up against the Eagles, a former district foe they’ve beaten seven straight times, as opposed to a much longer trip to face a Prestonsburg team that’s had their number in recent years. The MHS-Leslie winner will take on the Shelby Valley-Lexington Christian winner. The LCA Eagles( 4-5) pulled off another surprise Friday as they came back from a 13-0 halftime deficit to beat Danville 14-13 to win the second seed. Shelby Valley (5-4) won the three seed from District 8 with a 63-40 win over Betsy Layne. Middlesboro would travel to either LCA or Shelby Valley while Leslie County would host the regional semifinal against either team. The other side of the bracket will see Danville (6-3) go to Prestonsburg (5-4) for a first round game that many thought could be the regional championship heading into the season. Somerset (6-3) hosts Betsy Layne (6-3) in the other first round game. The Briarjumpers will play at home as long as they win through the state semifinals. It will be interesting to see how many more surprises this region could provide come playoff time. In Class 3A, Region 2 things have gone pretty much as expected with Bell County (8-1) and Louisville Central (7-2) seemingly on a collision course for the regional championship. The Bobcats will open the playoffs at home against Elizabethtown (0-9). Wayne County (7-2) plays at LaRue County (5-4) in the other game on that side of the bracket. Bell would host the regional semifinal. Central will open against Casey County (4-6) while Corbin (5-4) hosts Henry County (2-7) in the other first round game. Central will play at home through the regional final. The Yellowjackets are the defending 3A champions and their only losses this season have come 23-20 to Dupont Manual and 31-30 in overtime to St. Xavier. The Bobcats, of course, were a perineal top four team in Class 4A over the past several seasons and should give Central a game worthy of a state final if those teams do end up meeting in Louisville down the road. But there’s plenty of football to be played in the meantime. In Class A, the teams in Pineville’s district stayed the same during the last realignment but they moved over to Region 3 so the playoff opponents are different. The Mountain Lions (4-5) are the three seed from District 6 and they’ll open the playoffs with a visit to Campbellsville (5-4). The winner faces a daunting trip to District 6 champion Hazard (6-2) for the regional semifinals. The Bulldogs will host Lynn Camp (0-9) in the first round. On the other side of the bracket, District 5 champion Williamsburg (7-2) hosts Jenkins (1-8) while Harlan (5-3) hosts Berea (3-6). In Class 5A Harlan County (9-0) is the District 8 champion and they’ll open the playoffs against Pulaski County (3-6). The Black Bears have a highly anticipated match-up at Bell County on Friday. Letcher County Central (3-6) took the three seed in District 8 with a 40-30 win over Whitley County last Friday. They’ll visit Lincoln County (4-6) in the first round. On the other side of the region, District 7 champion Southwestern (6-3) hosts Whitley (3-6) while South Laurel (5-5) visits Perry County Central (7-2). middlesborodailynews.com/bookmark/16175325
