Several named to Mountain Classic Hall Of Fame Mountain Classic Hall of Fame
Now that the WYMT Whayne Supply Mountain Basketball Classic has come to a close, we take a look back at some of those who helped make the classic possible in the last 25 years. Former WYMT Sports Reporter Jay Crawford and former Clay County Tigers Basketball Coach Bobby Keith worked closely at the start of the Mountain Classic. While Crawford was one of the first to cover the event, Keith and his 1988 team became a cornerstone in the classics history. Both were honored for their service this past weekend in the Mountain Classic Hall of Fame. Sentinel-Echo.com 49th District votes to seed next year’s tournament By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The sides have been drawn clearly. North Laurel and Clay County prefer the 49th District Tournament to be seeded so the regular season determines the post season tournament matchups. Red Bird and Oneida Baptist want a blind draw, so their small schools have the best chance of making a 13th Region Tournament. The deciding vote was Jackson County and with Greg Parrett, a new boys’ basketball coach this season, the Generals sided with seeding. Red Bird coach John Wilson addressed the group about the reason his school could not vote for district seeding, which includes a requirement that each school play each other twice during the regular season. Oneida Baptist is the only 49th District team on the Red Bird schedule. The Mountaineers also play Clay County once during the regular season. They have a two-year contract with North Laurel to play one game beginning this year, but coach Jonathon Barnes could not see scheduling the district schools two games per year. With Clay County, Jackson County, and North Laurel voting in favor of seeding, the motion carried in the five team district. With Oneida Baptist and Red Bird not wanting to play district teams, they will automatically be the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds in next year’s tournament. The three teams competing for the top seeds will play home and away games next season to determine seeding for the district tournament. These games will be boys and girls doubleheaders. Should there be a tie for a seed after head-to-head competition, the tie breakers will be margin of victory in those games and if still tied a coin flip. sentinel-echo.com Redbird vs North and Clay vs Jackson in 49th By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
The North Laurel Jaguars (14-8) will open against Red Bird (3-8) on Feb. 21 at 8:15. The first game of the doubleheader will have the Lady Jaguars (5-16) taking on Oneida Baptist (1-11). All games will be played at North Laurel High School. The other two boys’ teams with winning records, Clay County (15-8) and Jackson County (11-8), will meet in the first round to see who plays Oneida Baptist (5-9) in the other semifinal. Red Bird does not play any district teams other than Oneida Baptist. The Cardinals three wins this season have come against Riverside Christian, Piarist, and Kentucky School for the Deaf. The only common opponent they share with North Laurel is Barbourville. Barbourville beat Red Bird 102-68 in the 13th Region All A Tournament. Barbourville beat North Laurel 72-55. It’s a similar story for the North Laurel girls. The Lady Jaguars first round opponent, Oneida Baptist, has a single win against Red Bird (3-8). With their small school schedule, Oneida shares no common opponent with North Laurel. They lost to Barbourville in the 13th Region All A Tournament, 79-7. Clay County (20-3) has more wins this season than the other four teams in the district combined. So any team with hopes of playing in the 13th Region Tournament, drawing opposite Clay County means a lot. Richmond RegisterHigh School HOOPS: Lady Indians tame Clay County By Nathan Hutchinson, Register Sports Editor
RICHMOND — Kristin Congleton didn’t have a point and only attempted three shots Thursday during a victory over No. 6 Clay County (21-4). Congleton had 11 rebounds and four blocks and played a big part in slowing down Clay County’s biggest offensive threat — forward Cheyenne Madden — as the Lady Indians picked up a hard-fought 42-38 win in Richmond. Madden finished with 20 points and nine rebounds, but Congleton held the standout in check. Clay County’s top scorer attempted only 14 shots and got to the free throw line just five times. She also had three turnovers. The Lady Tigers were 0-of-10 from three-point range and didn’t have anyone else in double figures. Alisha Mitchell, who averages 13 points a game, had just six points as Clay County had just four players score. Former Lady Tiger Heather Hinkle had three points for Madison Central. richmondregister.com/localsports/x2009899048/H-S-HOOPS-Lady-Indians-tame-Tigers
