Middlesboro Daily News Clay eliminates Lions in regional semifinal by JAY COMPTON, Sports Editor
CORBIN — The clock struck midnight on Pineville’s Cinderella run at the 13th Region Tournament Saturday with a 58-52 loss to Clay County in the semifinals. The Mountain Lions gave Clay all they wanted, but this time a potential go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute was off the mark and Tiger freshman Tyler McDaniel hit four straight free throws late as Clay County held on. McDaniel led all scorers with 23 points and carried the Tiger offense with 18 points in the second half. Zach McGeorge finished with 11 points in the game wile Stephon Lyttle and Brandon Word added six each. Pineville was led by junior center John Simpson, who finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, and junior forward Byron David Asher, who had 15 and 13. Seth Jeffrey added eight points and Cody Collett six. Pineville ends the season with a record of 12-19. Without a senior on the roster, the Lions just may have given the region a good at what to expect from the team next season. CORBIN — The North Laurel Jaguars used a strong defensive effort Saturday to upset Knox Central 38-30 in the semifinals of the 13th Region Tournament. North came out doubling Panther center Tobie Merida and prevented Knox from getting ball inside. As a result, the Panthers were never able to get in sync offensively. The Panthers were held to just 13 of 40 shooting, including 4 of 17 in the first half as North Laurel built a lead and made it stand up. The 49th District runner-up North Laurel (20-14) will face 49th District champion Clay County Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the 13th Region championship game. Knox Central ends the season with a record of 24-8. Saturday marked the final game for Panther seniors Johnathan Barger, Gilmore Achenjang and T.J. Kelly. Harlan Daily Enterprise Clay County wins another 13th Region Title
CORBIN – With Alisha Mitchell at the helm, the Clay County Lady Tigers haven’t experienced defeat against a regional opponent in the last four years. There was no way the senior point guard’s career was going to end with her first loss. kentucky.com Keith and Farmer will be part of Inaugural Kentucky high school basketball Hall of Fame
Kentucky high school basketball is getting its own Hall of Fame. It will not only have a brick-and-mortar structure, but also a mission of conveying the "essence" of the game to the state's young people. The Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches made that announcement on Tuesday and named the Hall of Fame's first inductees. The inaugural class is made up of 16 former players and coaches, including legends "King" Kelly Coleman, Ralph Carlisle, Richie Farmer, Darrell Griffith, Cliff Hagan, Jim McDaniels, S.T. Roach and Wes Unseld. On hand for the news conference at the Marriott were honorees Roy Bowling, Geri Grigsby, Clem Haskins, Bobby Keith and Wallace "Wah Wah" Jones. Keith, a coaching legend at Clay County, said being in the first class "is probably the biggest honor I've had in my life. To be mentioned with all these great coaches and players is unbelievable." Bowling, who coached Laurel County's girls to four state titles, said there are other Halls, "but this one means more. From what I've heard, it's really going to be an outstanding organization that people statewide will be interested in and proud of." Ken Trivette, executive director of the KABC, said the new Hall of Fame will be located in Elizabethtown at a site to be determined. The first class of honorees will be inducted on July 14 in Elizabethtown. The plan is to name a dozen or so new inductees every year so the Hall has 100 members by 2018 — the 100th anniversary of Kentucky high school basketball. In the meantime, Rick Whobrey, executive director of the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame, will crisscross the state doing promotion and fund-raising. Trivette said the organization will go into schools across the state to stress the "essence of high school basketball and the life lessons it can teach."
Richie Farmer: The Clay County legend played in five consecutive state tournaments, highlighted by a state title in 1987. He had a championship-game record 51 points in the Tigers' runner-up finish to Ballard in 1988.
Bobby Keith: He coached Clay County to 767 victories in 28 years, including a state title in 1987 and runner-up finishes in 1985 and 1988.

Harlan Daily Enterprise Expect Lady Tigers reign to continue one more year by JOHN MIDDLETON
The Clay County Lady Tigers completed yet another unbeaten season against regional foes as they captured their fourth straight 13th Region title last year. The Lady Tigers continued their dominance in the 2011-12 season, but it appears that the rest of the region has made up ground. I expect that gap to continue to become smaller next year. Clay County’s 60-game unbeaten streak against regional opponents could come to an end at some point in the season, but until someone knocks the Lady Tigers off in March they will remain at the top of my 13th Region rankings. All-Region Teams First team

C — Morgan Chesnut, Clay County Top Juniors
1. Cheyenne Madden (Clay County); 3. Morgan Chesnut (Clay County); Top Freshmen
5. Ajaycia Cotton (Clay County). Top Eighth-graders
3. TaLaura Mathis (Clay County); Player of the year
Alisha Mitchell, Clay County – There is something to be said for winning, and Mitchell has done nothing but that during her time at Clay County. In the past four seasons, Mitchell has led the Lady Tigers to four consecutive 13th Region titles and a 60-0 record against regional opponents. When the game is on the line there is no one better than the senior point guard. Coach of the year
James Burchell, Clay County – The Clay County coach often goes overlooked because the Lady Tigers are expected to win. However, Burchell is a big reason for that success. Clay lost its two leading scorers from a season ago, but with Burchell at the helm the Lady Tigers put together another remarkable season. Now, for a look ahead to next season Players are referred to by next year’s grade level
1. Clay County – Many prognosticators will likely tab Whitley County as the top team in the region next season, but I am not ready to move the Lady Tigers down just yet. Clay must replace arguably the best winner in 13th Region history as point guard Alisha Mitchell graduates, but plenty of talent returns. The Lady Tigers boast the region’s top frontcourt as 13th Region Tournament MVP Cheyenne Madden (18.4 points per game last season) and fellow senior Morgan Chesnut (8.3) both return. Freshman TaLaura Mathis (7.7) is one of the area’s best shooters and sophomore Ajaycia Cotton (2.2) will provide speed and athleticism in the backcourt. 2. Whitley County 3. Bell County 4. harlandaily.com Black Bears should snap regional skid by JOHN MIDDLETON
Just like last season, the Harlan County Black Bears will top my early list of the region’s top teams. Last year’s pick appeared to be pretty accurate until the season ended with two straight losses. Not only did the Bears fail to win their first game at the 13th Region Tournament, but they were upset by Middlesboro and were unable to capture the district title. I still have faith in the Bears, but I am becoming concerned that the talented group of soon-to-be seniors will graduate without a regional championship. Hopefully they realize this is their last opportunity to and take full advantage next season. All-Region Teams

Tyler McDaniel, Clay County Third team
Zach McGeorge, Clay County Fourth team
Kodi Reed, Clay County Top Freshmen
1. Tyler McDaniel (Clay County) Now, for a look ahead to next season players are referred to by next year’s grade level
1. Harlan County - The Bears will enter the season as big favorites to capture their first regional title, but they will first need to win a game in Corbin. Harlan County returns its six leading scorers from a season ago. 2. Clay County - The Tigers exceeded expectations with a regional finals appearance last season, but their championship drought continued after a loss to North Laurel. Three contributors are gone from that team, but sophomore Tyler McDaniel (12.8) and senior Kodi Reed (11.8) give Clay one of the best backcourt tandems in the region. 3. North Laurel 4. Knox Central 5. South Laurel 6. Pineville 7. Corbin 8. Middlesboro 9. Bell County 10. Clay County High School Basketball
Harlan Daily Enterprise Harlan County High School awarded 2013 regional basketball tournament JOHN MIDDLETON, Sports Editor
Harlan County High School fans enjoy arguably the best high school basketball gymnasium in the state – the rest of the 13th Region will now get that opportunity, as the school was selected to host the 2013 regional tournament. Kentucky High School Athletic Director Julian Tackett decided to award next year’s tournament to the school after a review of the school’s facilities. In a letter from Tackett to 13th Region Board of Regents Chairman Larry Warren, Tackett outlined his decision. According to a letter from Tackett, at the time the decision was made to host the 13th Region Tournament at the Corbin Arena: “the schools were in strong agreement at that time to request to this office that the tournament be set at the new Corbin Expo Center. There were several primary reasons for that recommendation including: The ability to house the sessions of the tournament without having to split into multiple sessions very often; The ability to park in close proximity to the event without having to try and find parking at remote locations; The availability of easily accessible entrances and exits, as well as areas for hospitality and enough locker rooms for all involved, including teams and officials; The ability to hold both boys and girls tournaments at the same venue to ensure equivalent treatment; and the financial benefits for each school were guaranteed with no obligation of the membership. It is my recollection that the schools had a guarantee of $1500 due to sponsorship sales and the non-participating school guarantee was strong as well.”
The primary reason for housing the tournament at The Arena was a financial guarantee. Tackett’s letter stated: “There were other advantages, but these were the primary ones that were mentioned. I think the overwhelming sentiment at that time was that with the financial guarantee, until such a time as a comparable facility was built meeting those main conditions, the tournament would remain in Corbin at the Civic Center. There was no other existing facility that successfully met all of those conditions, but the door remained open to the potential building of a new facility. However, it was also noted that the agreement was to be year to year, to be evaluated based on all circumstances.”

thenewsjournal.net Girls and boys 13th Region basketball tournaments will change venue in 2013
After three straight years of being held at The Arena in Corbin, the girls and boys 13th Region basketball tournaments will, tentatively, change venue in 2013. Kentucky High School Athletic Association Commissioner Julian Tackett confirmed Thursday that he has decided the tournaments would be played at Harlan County High School this upcoming season. The 13th Region is comprised of four smaller districts — 49th, 50th, 51st and 52nd. The right to host the tournaments rotates between the districts and among member schools in each of the districts. For the 2012-13 season, the 52nd has the right to host the tournament. Harlan County High School is in the 52nd District. Officials in Corbin said they were notified of the decision by Larry Warren, Chairman of the Region 13 Policy Committee. The committee had voted in 2009 to hold the tournament at The Arena by an overwhelming 13-4 majority. Members expressed a desire to make the decision a four-year deal. Tackett said the decision was actually made on a year-to-year basis. Under KHSAA member rules, the commissioner has final authority over the decision on sites for post-season tournaments. Tackett noted that his decision could change if Harlan County High School, and the 52nd District, proved unable to match the financial incentives offered since the tournaments have been moved to The Arena. Currently, all Region 13 schools receive at least $1,500 from the tournament, even if teams from that school do not participate. Participant schools get a percentage of profits based on the number of games played in the tournament. Tackett said he plans to review his decision in the fall to see if adequate progress is being made. thenewsjournal.net/details/6321/KHSAA-Commissioner-decides-13th-Region-basketball-tournaments-to-be-held-in-Harlan-next-year

Middlesboro Daily News Keith, Farmer part of first Kentucky basketball Hall of Fame
The first members of the inaugural class of the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame will be inducted this weekend in Elizabethtown and several familiar names with ties to this part of the state are included. Fomer Harlan standout “Wah Wah” Jones and Clay County sharp shooter Richie Farmer are among the players included in this first class along with coaches Roy Bowling of Laurel County and Bobby Keith of Clay County. Other famous names on the list include Wes Unseld of Seneca and Rex Chapman of Apollo. The new Hall of Fame was established by the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches to honor men’s and women’s players and coaches who have been the “essence of the game” for the nearly 100-year history of the sport. The plan is to select twelve players and four coaches annually between 2012 and 2018 to make up the inaugural class of inductees. 2018 also marks the centennial celebration of the KHSAA and high school basketball in Kentucky. Here’s the complete list of this year’s inductees: Ralph Beard – Male Roy Bowling – Laurel County (coach) Ralph Carlisle – Lafayette (coach) Rex Chapman – Apollo “King” Kelly Coleman – Wayland Richie Farmer – Clay County Darrell Griffith – Male Geri Grigsby – McDowell Clem Haskins – Durham/Taylor County Clemette Haskins – Warren Central Cliff Hagan – Owensboro Wallace “Wah Wah” Jones – Harlan Bobby Keith – Clay County (coach) Jim McDaniels – Allen County S. T. Roach – Dunbar (coach) Wes Unseld – Seneca
The induction ceremony will be held at the historic State Theater in Elizabethtown on July 14 at 8 p.m. following a reception at 6 p.m. The KHSBHF is governed by an independent board and chaired by Hal Smith, president emeritus of Pikeville College and currently the president of the Kentucky Governor’s Scholar Program Foundation. The board includes two hall of fame coaches, four award winning sports journalists, and two retired school administrators. The Hall is dedicated to promoting and educating the public about the culture, tradition and rich heritage of Kentucky high school basketball. It will honor and provide a fitting tribute to former players and coaches while preserving historical information and memorabilia associated with the game.
