Times-Tribune Corbin Lady Redhounds have a tough day at Clay County By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
CLAY COUNTY — For four minutes, the Corbin Lady Redhounds looked like they might be the team to hand the three-time defending 13th Region champion Clay County Lady Tigers their first region loss in 53 games. The Lady Redhounds (14-11) raced out to a 10-0 lead with 4:51 remaining in the first quarter, but then all of the sudden, Clay County woke up. The following 28 minutes saw the Lady Tigers put on a display that has been seen often during their seven-year dominance in the 13th Region. Clay County (23-5) scored 19 straight points while limiting Corbin to only 19 points the remainder of the game as the Lady Tigers cruised to an easy 64-29 win Saturday. The 35-point victory extended Clay County’s win streak against 13th Region teams to 53 games and now the Lady Tigers are an impressive 97-2 against 13th Region competition dating back to the 2005-06 season. Eighth grader Talaura Mathis knocked down five three-pointers and finished with 15 points in the win, but Corbin didn’t have an answer for Cheyenne Madden, who had her way in the post by leading all scorers with 25 points. fieldsnotes.bloginky.com 13th Region: Clay County, Harlan County lead contenders Posted by Mike Fields
As the regular season winds down, we’re taking a look at the boys’ favorites in each of the 16 regions: Clay County looks like it was underrated in the pre-season when it was No. 5 in the 13th Region. Coach Robert Marcum had to replace four starters and his sixth man, but the Tigers have improved steadily this season. The Tigers are 19-10 and rated No. 1 in the region by Dave Cantrall. They have a good mix of seniors and underclassmen. Kodi Reed, an athletic wing man, leads them with a 14-point average. Freshman point guard Tyler McDaniel, one of the best young golfers in the state, averages 13 points. Senior Zach McGeorge (11 ppg) is part of Clay County’s balanced attack that also includes junior Steven Wagers and senior Zac Kemp. The Lady Tigers are now 102-2 against 13th Region teams dating back to the 2005-06 season. Sentinel-Echo Tigers takes district title with 47-40 win over North Laurel By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
It surprised neither coach that the rematch bore little resemblance to an earlier meeting in Manchester. This time the Tigers had to stay focused until the closing minutes in a 47-40 win over North Laurel for the 49th District title. The Tigers won the earlier meeting,, 88-52, by taking charge early. This time, the Jaguars were within four points when Ethan Eversole scored with 3:05 to play. They also got the ball back with a chance to get closer. Three straight missed shots allowed that chance to slip away. The biggest change from the regular season meeting came on the defensive side. Clay County was not able to spot up for three pointers with Tyler McDaniel and Kody Reed being chased all over the court. The Tigers managed just one three-pointer and were held to 41 points less than they scored on their home floor. But Clay County played solid defense as well, forcing North Laurel to turn the ball over too many times. They also held North Laurel’s leading scorers, Jake Allen and Marcus Carson, to a combined 10 points. Both teams will advance to the 13th Region Tournament at The Arena in Corbin. Sentinel-Echo Clay rides outside game to district title By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
North Laurel did a lot of things right in the 49th District title game. The Lady Jaguars shut down the Clay County inside game and held leading scorer Cheyenne Madden to five points, 14 below her average. They also out rebounded Clay County. But they didn’t win the game. Clay County opened a double digit lead in the first quarter and stayed safely ahead on the way to 59-43 win. Mathis scored 24 points by making eight three-pointers, including her first four in the first quarter. Mathis had made 61 three-pointers coming into Friday’s game and was shooting 37 percent behind the arc. Both teams advance to the 13th Region Tournament at the Arena in Corbin. TheTimesTribune Who really is the favorite this year?
CORBIN — Coming into the season, many expected favorites Harlan County and Clay County to battle things out in the 13th Region Tournament championship for the right to advance to the Sweet Sixteen — but after Sunday’s draw at The Arena, both teams will face-off in a first round elimination game instead. Until Friday’s 52nd District championship game, Mike Jones’ Black Bears (27-5) were penciled in as the team to beat in the 13th Region. But a 53-48 loss at home to Middlesboro (18-13) in the 52nd District Tournament finals shook up the 13th Region landscape and now it’s anyone’s region to win. TheTimesTribune Lady Tigers are defending three-time 13th Region champions By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Or at least it seems that way in the 13th Region on the girls’ side of things. Once again, James Burchell’s Clay County Lady Tigers will enter this week’s 13th Region Tournament as the region favorites and they should be. The Lady Tigers come into the tournament with the region’s best record at 28-5 while winning the past three 13th Region championships — but that’s not all. Burchell’s squad has been dominant since the realignment of the 13th Region seven yars ago. Dating back to the 2005-06 season, Clay County is 102-2 against 13th Region competition and the Lady Tigers now possess a 58-game win streak against 13th Region teams. Their last loss against a 13th Region foe came on March 9, 2008 against South Laurel in the 13th Region title game. Read the entire article at: thetimestribune.com/sports/x843246150/Clays-to-lose

THE ARENA — It might not look pretty at times, but all Clay County does is win. The three-time defending 13th Region champions didn’t have any problem at all advancing to the semifinals of the 13th Region Girls Tournament, as they turned in a stellar defensive effort to knock off the Corbin Lady Redhounds, 49-33. Clay County finished the game connecting on 20-of-43 shot attempts while outrebounding Corbin, 25-24. The Lady Tigers had 14 assists in the win, as Madden led them with a 13-point effort. TheTimesTribune.com Do-or-die time for both Clay and Harlan Co. By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
A potential 13th Region championship match-up is taking place today in the first round of the 13th Region Boys Tournament. Both Clay County and Harlan County were picked by many as preseason favorites to win the 13th Region title, but no one expected the two teams would meet up in the first round. Up until last week’s 52nd District championship game, Mike Jones’ Black Bears (27-5) were penciled in as the favorites as the 13th Region. But a 53-48 loss at home to Middlesboro (18-13) in the 52nd District Tournament finals shook up the 13th Region landscape. Clay County (22-10) is riding a five-game win streak and played Harlan County earlier in the season, losing in double overtime, 74-72. In the opening game of the tournament the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets improbable run came to an as the 52nd District champions were eliminated in a 59-43 loss to North Laurel in the opening round of the 13th Region Tournament. In game two South Laurel got off to a good start but Knox Central turned up their defensive pressure in the second half to pull off a 59-50 win. thetimestribune.com/sports/x606735374/Do-or-die-time-for-both-Clay-and-Harlan-Co

TheTimesTribune.com Can Maci Morris lead Bell County past Clay County? By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
The Clay County Lady Tigers are one win away from reaching the 13th Region Girls Tournament championship game for the eighth straight season. The last time they failed to reach the regional title game came back during the 2003-04 season when Rockcastle County handed former coach Donnie Gray’s squad a 60-46 loss in the first round of the 49th District Tournament. Bell County (19-11) faces the tough task of trying to send the Lady Tigers (29-5) home during the nightcap of the 13th Region Girls Tournament semifinals. The Lady Bobcats had to fight back from a 10-point second half deficit during first round action against Knox Central to advance, as freshman Maci Morris scored 32 points and had 12 rebounds in the 64-50 win. Clay County has won 58 straight games against 13th Region competition while garnering an impressive 103-2 record against 13th Region foes dating back to the 2005-06 season. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1511862204/Can-Maci-Morris-lead-Bell-County-past-Clay-County
